Chapter 4: The Secret His Father Buried

Adrian had spent his entire life learning one rule.

Never let anyone see you lose control.

His father had taught him that.

“Emotion makes people weak,” Victor Cross used to say.

At twelve years old, Adrian had believed every word.

At twenty-five, he realized his father wasn’t teaching him strength.

He was teaching him how to become someone nobody could reach.

But standing in that hospital hallway, staring at a man who claimed Victor Cross knew about his own daughter, Adrian felt something he hadn’t felt in years.

Rage.

“Say that again.””

The man swallowed.

“Your father knew Mia existed.””

Mia stood beside Adrian, completely still.

The man looked at her and immediately lowered his voice.

“I didn’t mean for her to hear that.””

Adrian stepped closer.

“No.””

His voice was quiet.

Dangerously quiet.

“You’re going to say everything in front of her.””

The man looked uncomfortable.

“Mr. Cross—”

“Everything.””

The man glanced around the hospital.

“My name is Thomas Reed.””

Adrian’s eyes narrowed.

“Victor’s legal advisor.””

“Yes.””

“You disappeared after my father’s funeral.””

Thomas looked away.

“I was told to leave.””

“By who?””

Silence.

Adrian already knew the answer.

“Who?””

Thomas exhaled.

“Your father.””

Adrian laughed once.

A cold, humorless sound.

“My father was dead.””

“Before he died.””

The words hung between them.

Mia looked confused.

“Why does everyone talk like they’re hiding something?””

Nobody answered.

Because she was right.

Everyone had been hiding something.

The question was why.

Adrian pointed toward the consultation room.

“Inside.””

Thomas followed.

Mia moved too.

Adrian looked at her.

“You don’t have to.””

“Yes, I do.””

“Mia.””

“No.””

Her eyes met his.

“You keep finding out things about my life that I don’t know.””

A pause.

“I’m tired of being the last person to hear the truth.””

Adrian had no argument.

They entered the room.

Thomas remained standing.

Adrian closed the door.

“Start from the beginning.””

Thomas rubbed his hands together nervously.

“Your father discovered Elena was pregnant.””

Mia looked at him.

“Pregnant with me?””

“Yes.””

“When?””

“About three months after she left.””

Adrian’s face tightened.

“She didn’t tell me.””

“No.””

“Why?””

Thomas looked at him.

“That’s complicated.””

“Try me.””

Thomas looked at Mia.

“Your father believed Elena was a threat.””

Adrian froze.

“A threat?””

“He believed she would use the child to gain control of the company.””

Mia’s expression changed.

“She thought my mom wanted money?””

“Yes.””

“That’s not true.””

Her voice was immediate.

Thomas looked ashamed.

“I know.””

Adrian stared at him.

“You knew?””

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

Thomas looked down.

“Because Victor ordered me not to.””

The silence that followed felt heavier than shouting.

Adrian walked to the window.

Outside, rain had begun falling against the glass.

A slow, steady rain.

The kind that made the world feel trapped.

“My father knew Elena was pregnant.””

“Yes.””

“He knew about Mia.””

“Yes.””

“And he kept it from me.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Thomas hesitated.

Adrian turned.

“Answer me.””

Thomas swallowed.

“Because he wanted you to marry someone else.””

The room went completely quiet.

Mia looked between them.

“What?””

Adrian’s eyes hardened.

“My father arranged my life?””

Thomas said nothing.

That was answer enough.

Adrian remembered.

The endless business dinners.

The constant pressure.

The names his father mentioned.

Families.

Connections.

Deals.

He had thought Victor cared about building an empire.

Now he wondered if everything had been about control.

“He told Elena to stay away from you,” Thomas said.

Adrian’s voice dropped.

“What did he threaten her with?””

Thomas looked away.

“She refused to tell me.””

“Then how do you know?””

“Because I saw the agreement.””

“What agreement?””

Thomas reached into his briefcase.

He pulled out an old folder.

The paper edges were yellow.

Aged.

Forgotten.

He placed it on the table.

Adrian opened it.

The first page made his breathing stop.

*CONFIDENTIAL PATERNITY MATTER.*

His hands tightened.

He turned the page.

There were copies of medical records.

Elena’s name.

His name.

And a third name.

Mia Carter.

“This is impossible.””

Thomas shook his head.

“No.””

Adrian kept reading.

A note from Victor.

*Adrian must not be informed until the succession transition is complete.*

Adrian stared.

Succession.

His father’s company.

The empire.

Everything.

Victor had hidden his granddaughter because of business.

Because of control.

Mia quietly asked:

“What does that mean?””

Adrian looked at her.

He didn’t know how to explain that an old man who had been dead for years had stolen twelve years from both of them.

“It means someone made a decision about your life without asking you.””

Mia looked down.

“That happened a lot.””

The sentence was simple.

But it hurt.

Adrian looked at her.

“What do you mean?””

She shrugged.

“My mom decided where we lived.””

“My mom decided what school I went to.””

“My mom decided what I could know about my dad.””

Her voice lowered.

“I guess adults do that.””

Adrian wanted to say he was different.

But he wasn’t.

Not completely.

Because he had spent the last hour thinking about what Elena had done to him.

Not what had been done to her.

“What happened after?”” Adrian asked Thomas.

Thomas looked at the floor.

“Victor arranged for Elena to receive money.””

Mia immediately shook her head.

“She wouldn’t take it.””

“How do you know?””

“Because she always said money that came with strings wasn’t a gift.””

Adrian looked at her.

That sounded exactly like Elena.

Thomas nodded.

“She refused.””

“Then what?””

“Victor threatened to destroy her.””

Adrian went still.

“How?””

“He knew about her medical condition.””

Mia’s face changed.

“My mom was already sick?””

Thomas nodded.

“Even then.””

Adrian felt sick.

“He used her illness against her?””

Thomas didn’t answer.

He didn’t need to.

Adrian turned away.

His father had always called himself a protector.

But this wasn’t protection.

This was cruelty.

A knock interrupted them.

The doctor entered.

“Mr. Cross?””

Adrian turned.

“Yes?””

“Elena is awake.””

Mia immediately stood.

“Can I see her?””

The doctor nodded.

“For a few minutes.””

Mia rushed out.

Adrian followed.

But before he reached the door, Thomas spoke.

“There’s something else.””

Adrian stopped.

“What?””

Thomas looked terrified.

“Victor wasn’t the only person who knew.””

Adrian slowly turned.

“Who else?””

Thomas hesitated.

“The woman your father wanted you to marry.””

Adrian’s expression changed.

“Rebecca?””

Thomas nodded.

“Rebecca knew Elena had a daughter.””

Mia’s voice echoed from the hallway.

“Dad?””

Adrian looked toward the door.

Then back at Thomas.

“How?””

Thomas lowered his voice.

“Because she was the one who helped your father hide the records.””

Adrian’s blood went cold.

Rebecca.

The woman who had smiled at him after Elena disappeared.

The woman who had told him:

“Some people leave because they were never meant to stay.””

A memory.

A sentence he had forgotten.

Now it sounded different.

Adrian walked toward the hospital room.

But before he opened the door, he heard Elena’s weak voice from inside.

“Mia?””

His heart stopped.

He entered.

Elena lay pale against the white sheets.

Older.

Weaker.

But still Elena.

The woman he had loved.

The woman he had hated.

The woman he had never stopped missing.

Her eyes found him.

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then her face changed.

Not surprise.

Fear.

“No.””

Adrian froze.

Elena looked at Mia.

Then at him.

“Why is he here?””

Mia stepped forward.

“Mom…”

Elena’s eyes filled.

“What did you tell him?””

Adrian felt the words before he heard them.

“You knew I was alive.””

Elena closed her eyes.

A tear escaped.

“Adrian…”

“Twelve years.””

His voice shook.

“Twelve years, Elena.””

Mia looked between them.

She didn’t understand everything.

But she understood enough.

Her mother had known him.

Her father.

Elena whispered:

“I was trying to protect you.””

Adrian stepped closer.

“From what?””

Silence.

Then Elena looked at Mia.

And whispered the sentence that changed everything.

“From the man who tried to kill you.””

Adrian stopped breathing.

“What?””

Mia grabbed her mother’s hand.

“Mom, what are you saying?””

Elena looked directly at Adrian.

Her eyes filled with fear.

“Victor Cross didn’t just want you to forget us.””

A pause.

“He wanted Mia gone.””

The heart monitor beside her sped up.

Adrian stared.

“No.””

Elena shook her head.

“I saw what he was willing to do.””

The room became painfully quiet.

Then Elena whispered:

“And I knew if you found out…”

Her voice broke.

“He would come after your daughter.””

Adrian looked at Mia.

His daughter.

The child he never knew.

The child his father had hidden.

And for the first time, he realized the secret wasn’t only about the past.

It was still alive.

Because somewhere out there…

May you like

Someone else knew Mia existed.

And they had a reason to keep her hidden.
