Chapter 5: The Woman Who Knew the Truth

The room became silent except for the steady rhythm of the heart monitor.

Beep.

Beep.

Beep.

Every sound felt too loud.

Adrian stood beside Elena’s hospital bed, unable to move.

For twelve years, he had carried one story in his mind.

Elena left.

Elena took his child.

Elena chose a life without him.

It had been easier to hate someone who abandoned him than to accept the possibility that someone had taken everything from both of them.

But now the truth was changing shape.

And the person at the center of it was a man who could no longer defend himself.

His father.

“Tell me everything.””

Elena looked away.

“Adrian…”

“No.””

His voice was low.

“Not another secret. Not another person deciding what I’m allowed to know.””

Mia stood between them, holding her mother’s hand.

Elena looked at her daughter.

Then back at him.

“You deserve the truth.””

“Yes.””

A tear slid down her cheek.

“But I was afraid.””

“Of Victor?””

She nodded.

“And of you.””

The answer surprised him.

“Me?””

Elena closed her eyes.

“When Victor came to see me, he told me you knew everything.””

Adrian frowned.

“That’s impossible.””

“He said you wanted nothing to do with us.””

The words hit him.

“No.””

“He showed me messages.””

“What messages?””

“Messages from your phone.””

Adrian went completely still.

“My phone?””

“Yes.””

“He forged them.””

“I know that now.””

Mia looked confused.

“Why would he do that?””

Elena looked at her daughter.

“Because he knew if we stayed together, he would lose control.””

Adrian walked closer.

“What did the messages say?””

Elena hesitated.

Then whispered:

“That you regretted meeting me.””

Adrian’s face changed.

“No.””

“That you wanted me to stop contacting you.””

“No.””

“That you had chosen your family over me.””

His hands curled into fists.

“I never said those things.””

“I know.””

The room fell quiet.

“You know now.””

Elena looked at him.

“But back then?””

She swallowed.

“I was twenty-one. I was pregnant. I had no money.

No family. And the man I loved was supposedly telling me he didn’t want me.””

Adrian looked down.

For the first time, he saw the story from her side.

Not as a betrayal.

As a trap.

“What happened after you left?””

Elena stared at the ceiling.

“I tried to call you.””

Adrian looked up.

“You did?””

“Yes.””

“How many times?””

“Hundreds.””

His breath caught.

“What?””

“Your number changed.””

“It didn’t.””

“It did.””

“No.””

He shook his head.

“I had the same number for fifteen years.””

Elena’s face changed.

Then she slowly reached toward the drawer beside her bed.

“Mia.””

“Yes, Mom?””

“Bring me my purse.””

Mia grabbed it.

Her hands shook as she searched inside.

She pulled out an old phone.

The screen was cracked.

Adrian stared.

“You kept that?””

Elena nodded.

“I kept everything.””

She handed it to him.

The phone was ancient.

The kind people stopped using years ago.

Adrian turned it on.

The battery barely responded.

But there were messages.

Hundreds.

Most unread.

He opened the first one.

*Adrian, please call me.*

Another.

*I don’t understand what happened.*

Another.

*I’m scared. Please just tell me you’re okay.*

His fingers froze.

He scrolled.

Message after message.

Months.

Years.

Until finally:

*I’m sorry. I think he found us. I can’t risk Mia anymore.*

Adrian looked up.

“Why didn’t I receive these?””

Elena looked at him.

“Because someone changed the number connected to your account.””

“That’s impossible.””

“No.””

Her voice became stronger.

“Not for Victor Cross.””

Adrian stared at the screen.

His father.

A man who controlled businesses.

Banks.

People.

Apparently even his own son’s life.

Mia quietly asked:

“So you really didn’t leave?””

Adrian looked at her.

“No.””

She looked at her mother.

“Mom…”

Elena reached for her hand.

“I’m sorry.””

“For what?””

“For letting you grow up without him.””

Mia’s eyes filled.

“You said he didn’t want me.””

Elena broke.

“I was wrong.””

The words were barely audible.

Mia pulled her hand away.

Not angrily.

Just hurt.

“You lied to me.””

Elena cried silently.

“I thought I was protecting you.””

“But you made me think nobody wanted me.””

Adrian felt those words deeper than anything else.

Because he understood them.

He had spent twelve years believing nobody wanted him either.

The door opened.

The doctor stepped inside.

“I’m sorry to interrupt.””

Everyone turned.

“We need to move quickly.””

Elena looked worried.

“What happened?””

“The transplant team reviewed your file.””

“And?””

The doctor looked at Adrian.

“We need additional family history.””

Adrian nodded.

“Take whatever you need.””

“There is another concern.””

“What?””

The doctor glanced at Mia.

“Her genetic results showed something unexpected.””

Mia stiffened.

“About me?””

“Yes.””

Adrian stepped closer.

“What kind of unexpected?””

The doctor looked at the report.

“We found a rare inherited condition.””

Elena’s face went pale.

“No.””

Adrian looked at her.

“You knew?””

Elena looked away.

“Mia doesn’t have symptoms.””

“That’s not what I asked.””

The doctor quietly left.

Adrian’s voice lowered.

“You knew.””

Elena closed her eyes.

“I suspected.””

“How long?””

“Since she was born.””

Mia looked between them.

“Mom?””

Elena reached for her.

“Mia, listen to me—”

“No.””

Mia stepped back.

“Another secret?””

Her voice broke.

“Another thing you didn’t tell me?””

“I was trying to protect you.””

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

Mia wiped her face.

“But nobody asks what I want.””

The room went silent.

Adrian watched his daughter walk toward the window.

Twelve years old.

And already exhausted from carrying adult secrets.

He wanted to go to her.

But he didn’t know if he had earned that right.

Then Elena spoke.

“She has the same condition I do.””

Adrian turned.

“What?””

Elena looked at him.

“It’s why my heart failed.””

His expression changed.

“The condition is genetic?””

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t anyone treat it?””

“Because we didn’t know until later.””

“Who knew?””

Elena didn’t answer.

Adrian immediately noticed.

“Who knew?””

Her eyes moved toward the door.

The fear returned.

“Someone else.””

“Who?””

Elena whispered:

“Rebecca.””

Adrian felt the room tilt.

“Rebecca knew about this?””

“Yes.””

“When?””

“Before Mia was born.””

“How?””

Elena looked terrified.

“Because she was there when Victor found out.””

Adrian stared.

His mind raced.

Rebecca.

His father.

The hidden records.

The forged messages.

The threats.

Everything connected.

“Why would Rebecca help him?””

Elena laughed weakly.

Not because it was funny.

Because it was painful.

“Because she wanted your life.””

Adrian froze.

“What?””

“She wanted your company.””

“She was going to marry me.””

“Yes.””

“Then why hide my daughter?””

Elena looked at him.

“Because a man with a child has different priorities.””

The words cut.

Adrian understood.

His father had always believed family was a weakness.

Rebecca understood that too.

She had seen Mia as an obstacle.

Not a person.

A knock came at the door.

Everyone turned.

A nurse stood there.

“Mr. Cross?””

“Yes?””

“There’s someone asking to see you.””

“Who?””

The nurse looked nervous.

“She said her name is Rebecca Hale.””

Adrian’s blood went cold.

Mia looked at him.

“Who is she?””

Adrian stared at the doorway.

The woman who knew the truth.

The woman who had helped erase twelve years of his life.

“I don’t know.””

But Elena whispered from the bed:

“Yes, you do.””

Adrian looked back.

Elena’s face had lost all color.

“Don’t let her near Mia.””

The door slowly opened.

And Rebecca Hale stepped inside.

Elegant.

Calm.

Perfectly dressed.

Just like she had always been.

She looked at Adrian.

Then at Mia.

And smiled.

A smile that made Elena’s heart monitor accelerate.

“Hello, Adrian.””

A pause.

Then Rebecca looked at the girl beside him.

“So…”

May you like

Her eyes narrowed.

“You finally found your daughter.””
