Chapter 10: The Recording That Exposed Everything

The recording arrived at 8:17 on Thursday morning.

It was an audio file attached to an email from Martin Wells.

The subject line contained only four words:

*You deserve the truth.*

I was sitting in Claire's office when her computer chimed.

She opened the attachment.

"Before we listen," she said, "I want you to understand something. This recording may become important evidence. We need to preserve the original file and avoid sharing it publicly.""

I nodded.

"Just play it.""

Claire pressed the button.

At first, there was static.

Then a man's voice.

Diane.

"Everything needs to be settled before the transfer. I don't want any confusion afterward.""

Another voice responded.

It was Daniel.

"Amara still thinks we're going to try another cycle.""

Diane laughed.

"Let her think that.""

My stomach tightened.

I gripped the armrest.

Daniel continued.

"She's already struggling. If she finds out about Vanessa, she'll destroy everything.""

"She won't find out," Diane replied.

"By the time she understands what's happened, the children will already be part of this family.""

A third voice entered.

It belonged to a man.

The clinic director.

"Mrs. Bennett, I must remind you that the patient has not authorized this transfer.""

Diane's response was immediate.

"Then don't put her name on the authorization.""

I stopped breathing.

The director hesitated.

"That's not how our procedures work.""

Diane's voice became colder.

"Do you know how much money my foundation has invested in this clinic?""

Silence.

Then Daniel spoke.

"Mom, can we just get this done?""

Diane answered:

"Your father wanted grandchildren. Two boys. The trust is clear. We are simply making sure his wishes are fulfilled.""

The recording continued.

The clinic director asked another question.

"And what happens if Ms. Bennett discovers the transfer?""

Diane laughed softly.

"She has spent seven years believing she is the problem. She won't suddenly become a detective.""

I felt tears sliding down my cheeks.

Claire paused the recording.

"Amara?""

I shook my head.

"Keep going.""

She pressed play.

Daniel's voice sounded nervous.

"What if Vanessa changes her mind?""

"She won't.""

"She's been asking questions.""

"Then tell her the biological mother agreed to the arrangement.""

"But she hasn't.""

Diane sighed.

"Daniel, you need to understand something. Vanessa wants a family. You want children.

I want my grandchildren. Everyone gets what they want.""

The director interrupted.

"And the biological mother?""

Diane replied without hesitation.

"She gets nothing.""

The recording ended several seconds later.

I stared at the screen.

For seven years, I had believed that my inability to become pregnant had destroyed my marriage.

Now I had heard my former husband and his mother discussing my stolen embryos as though they were business inventory.

Claire closed the laptop.

"We have enough to establish a serious pattern of misconduct.""

I wiped my face.

"Can we use it?""

"Yes, subject to authentication and any applicable evidentiary rules. Martin has also provided a sworn statement describing how the recording was made.""

"Where is the clinic director now?""

"Retired. His name is Paul Henderson.""

I looked at her.

"Can we find him?""

"Already have.""

Claire opened another document.

"He has agreed to speak with investigators.""

I sat back.

"What about Diane?""

"Her attorney has been notified that we possess the recording. She hasn't responded.""

I looked down at my hands.

For the first time, I didn't feel confused.

I felt angry.

A clear, steady anger.

The kind that makes a person stop asking why someone hurt them and start asking what can be done to prevent it from happening again.

"Claire?""

"Yes?""

"I want the boys' legal adoption protected.""

"We're working on it.""

"I want the medical records corrected.""

"We've requested that.""

"And I want every person who participated in this investigated.""

Claire nodded.

"That's already underway.""

My phone vibrated.

It was a message from Vanessa.

Diane has called me twelve times. She says I need to stop talking to you. She's threatening to expose something about my pregnancy.

I showed Claire.

She read it carefully.

"Have you spoken to Vanessa today?""

"No.""

"Call her.""

I dialed immediately.

She answered in tears.

"Amara?""

"What's happening?""

"Diane says she has documents proving I'm an unfit mother.""

"Those documents were fabricated.""

"I know, but she says she'll send them to everyone. My employer. My family. The hospital.""

I closed my eyes.

"Vanessa, listen to me. Don't respond to her.""

"She's going to destroy my life.""

"She's trying to frighten you.""

Vanessa began crying harder.

"Why does she hate us so much?""

I looked at the laptop.

The recording was still open.

"Because she thinks she owns the future of everyone around her.""

Vanessa was silent.

Then she said:

"There's something else I need to tell you.""

"What?""

"Daniel has been meeting with someone.""

"Who?""

"I don't know. But I found hotel receipts in his car. He's been staying downtown twice a week.""

"Maybe it's business.""

"No, Amara. The receipts are from a private medical center.""

My heart began racing.

"Which one?""

"Westbridge Women's Clinic.""

Claire immediately looked up.

She recognized the name.

"That's the clinic where Diane's foundation funded the pregnancy program.""

Vanessa continued.

"Daniel told me he was handling something for my pregnancy. But yesterday I found a folder in his desk.""

"What was in it?""

"An ultrasound appointment. Not mine.""

I went completely still.

"What?""

"It was scheduled for next week. The patient's name was listed as confidential, but the appointment was paid for through the Bennett trust.""

I looked at Claire.

She mouthed, Get the document.

"Vanessa, can you send me a photograph?""

"Yes.""

A minute later, the image arrived.

The appointment was scheduled for Tuesday.

Under the payment information was a note:

*Additional beneficiary assessment — third child.*

I read it twice.

"Third child?"" I whispered.

Claire took my phone.

She enlarged the image.

Then her expression changed.

"Amara, this could be another embryo arrangement.""

My stomach tightened.

"Are you saying Diane is doing this again?""

Claire didn't answer.

She was already calling the clinic.

That afternoon, Daniel appeared outside my house.

I saw him through the front window.

He was standing beside his car, holding a small gift bag.

Olivia was visiting.

She immediately moved toward the door.

"Don't let him in.""

I shook my head.

"I'll speak to him.""

"Amara—"

"I won't be alone. Just stay here.""

I opened the door but didn't invite him inside.

"What do you want?""

Daniel looked exhausted.

"I brought something for the boys.""

"They don't need anything from you.""

He held up the bag.

"Just toys.""

"Take them home.""

He lowered his hand.

"Amara, please. I listened to the recording.""

My expression didn't change.

"Then you know what you've done.""

"I know.""

"Do you?""

He looked toward the house.

"Can I see them?""

"No.""

"Just for five minutes.""

"You had three years.""

His eyes filled.

"I was wrong.""

I stared at him.

"That's not enough.""

"I know.""

He looked down.

"My mother controlled everything. I thought if I followed her instructions, things would eventually work out.""

I almost laughed.

"You watched me cry over our failed treatments.""

He nodded.

"You told me I was broken.""

"I know.""

"You sat beside me while your mother blamed me.""

His voice cracked.

"I know.""

I stepped closer.

"Then tell me something, Daniel. Did you ever love me?""

He looked at me.

For several seconds, he didn't answer.

Finally, he said, "Yes.""

I shook my head.

"Then you should have protected me.""

He began crying.

I felt nothing.

Not because I was heartless.

Because I had spent too many years carrying the emotional consequences of his decisions.

I turned to close the door.

Then he said:

"Amara, my mother isn't finished.""

I stopped.

"What do you mean?""

He looked directly at me.

"She has another embryo.""

My blood ran cold.

"Where?""

"At Westbridge.""

I stared at him.

"Whose embryo?""

He swallowed.

"Yours.""

May you like

And before I could ask another question, he added:

"She wants another baby.""
