Chapter 13: The Signature They Wanted Before Birth

The hospital corridor smelled of disinfectant and rain-soaked coats.

By the time Claire and I reached the maternity ward, Rebecca was standing outside a private room, pale and visibly frightened.

"Where's Vanessa?"" I asked.

"Inside. They're monitoring her contractions.""

"Is the baby okay?""

"The doctors say the baby is stable for now. They're trying to slow the labor.""

I exhaled.

"Where are Daniel and Diane?""

Rebecca pointed toward the nurses' station.

"They're speaking with the hospital administrator.""

Claire immediately walked over.

I went straight to Vanessa's room.

She was lying on her side, one hand resting on her stomach. Her face was damp with sweat.

When she saw me, she began crying.

"You came.""

I took her hand.

"I'm here.""

"They said I have to sign something.""

"Don't worry about that right now. Focus on yourself and the baby.""

She shook her head.

"Diane said if I don't sign, the baby could lose everything.""

I frowned.

"What exactly did she give you?""

Vanessa reached toward the bedside table.

A document lay beneath her phone.

I picked it up.

The title read:

*Declaration of Beneficial Parentage and Trust Administration.*

I scanned the first paragraph.

It claimed that Vanessa acknowledged Daniel as the sole biological parent of the unborn child and agreed that any financial benefits attached to the child would remain under Diane's administration.

My hands tightened.

"She wants you to sign away your baby's financial rights.""

Vanessa nodded.

"She said it was just a standard family document.""

"It isn't.""

Claire entered behind me.

She read the first page, then turned to the final section.

"There's another problem.""

"What?""

"This document also asks Vanessa to acknowledge that she knowingly participated in the original reproductive arrangement involving Eli and Isaiah.""

Vanessa sat up.

"But I didn't know!""

"I know," Claire said gently.

"And that's why you must not sign it.""

Vanessa began crying again.

"They're trying to make it look like I knew everything.""

Claire placed the document inside her folder.

"We'll preserve this as evidence.""

A nurse entered and checked Vanessa's blood pressure.

"Ms. Lewis, you need to rest. Your contractions are increasing.""

Vanessa gripped my hand.

"Please don't leave.""

"I won't.""

The nurse adjusted the monitor.

A steady heartbeat filled the room.

For a moment, the legal battle disappeared.

There was only a woman about to give birth.

A baby fighting to arrive safely.

And a future that deserved better than the people trying to control it.

Daniel entered twenty minutes later.

He looked at Vanessa first.

"How are you?""

She turned her face away.

"Don't.""

He glanced at me.

"Amara, can we talk?""

"No.""

"It's important.""

Claire stepped between us.

"Any communication regarding the trust or parentage needs to go through counsel.""

Daniel ignored her.

"Vanessa, my mother only wants to protect the baby.""

Vanessa let out a disbelieving laugh.

"Then why did she bring me a document that says I have to give up control of my own child's inheritance?""

"That's not what it means.""

"Then explain it.""

He opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

I stood.

"Daniel, leave.""

He looked at me.

"You don't understand what my mother is trying to do.""

"I understand perfectly.""

"No, you don't. The trust is complicated.""

"Your children are not complicated. They are people.""

He lowered his voice.

"She has spent years trying to keep everything together.""

I stared at him.

"By stealing my embryos?""

He looked away.

"By protecting the family.""

"By forging my signature?""

He said nothing.

"By paying to have two little boys removed from the woman who loved them?""

His face changed.

I stepped closer.

"Do you know what Isaiah does when he has a bad dream?""

Daniel looked at me.

"He comes to my room and asks me to hold his red car until he falls asleep. Eli checks the door twice because he worries someone might leave without saying goodbye.""

Daniel's eyes filled.

"They're my sons.""

"Then you should have acted like their father.""

He looked toward Vanessa.

"Please. I made mistakes.""

Vanessa's voice was weak but firm.

"You didn't make mistakes. You made decisions.""

Daniel stared at her.

She continued.

"You let me believe I was the mother of those boys in every way that mattered. Then you let your mother take them away. Now you're trying to make me sign something that could hurt my own baby.""

He lowered his head.

For the first time, I saw no anger in his face.

Only fear.

A doctor entered.

"Mr. Bennett, I need you to step outside. We need to prepare for delivery.""

Daniel hesitated.

Vanessa looked at him.

"Don't come back in unless I ask.""

He left.

An hour later, Diane arrived.

She wore a cream-colored coat and carried a leather folder.

She looked almost elegant enough to be attending a charity luncheon.

"Vanessa," she said.

"How are you feeling?""

Vanessa turned toward the window.

Diane placed the folder on the table.

"I brought the revised paperwork.""

Claire stood immediately.

"There will be no signing today.""

Diane's expression hardened.

"This is a family matter.""

"No," Claire replied.

"It is a legal matter involving a pregnant woman in active labor. You will not pressure her.""

Diane looked at me.

"You've become very comfortable interfering in my family.""

I met her eyes.

"They were my family before you decided to steal them.""

Her smile disappeared.

"Be careful, Amara.""

"I'm finished being careful.""

Diane opened her folder.

"I know you've been speaking with Martin, Stephen, and Margaret. I also know you've been circulating documents that you don't fully understand.""

Claire stepped forward.

"Those documents are now part of an active investigation.""

Diane gave a small laugh.

"An investigation? You think a few old emails can undo years of carefully established legal arrangements?""

I took a photograph from my handbag.

It showed the $250,000 payment.

"Then explain this.""

She glanced at it.

For half a second, her expression changed.

Then she smiled.

"Administrative expenses.""

"Success fee for removing Vanessa's children.""

"That's an outrageous accusation.""

"Stephen Price has the transaction records.""

Diane's eyes narrowed.

"Stephen was never trustworthy.""

"What about the original embryo authorization?""

She said nothing.

"What about the forged signature?""

Silence.

"What about the third embryo?""

Diane closed the folder.

"You're making a terrible mistake.""

"No. I made a terrible mistake when I trusted your son to love me.""

Her voice dropped.

"You have no idea what Richard wanted.""

I held up his letter.

"Then tell me why he wrote that the children's biological mother should raise them and control the trust.""

Diane's face turned pale.

For the first time, she looked genuinely frightened.

"Where did you get that?""

"From the truth.""

She stepped closer.

"That letter was never meant to be used this way.""

Claire interrupted.

"Mrs. Bennett, the court has ordered the remaining embryo preserved. The trust is under review. You are also being investigated for financial misconduct and interference with parental rights.""

Diane stared at her.

"You cannot prove I intended to harm anyone.""

I looked at her.

"Maybe not everything. But you can't erase what you've already done.""

A nurse appeared at the doorway.

"Ms. Lewis, we're moving you to delivery.""

Vanessa reached for my hand.

I squeezed it.

As the staff wheeled her away, Diane stood motionless in the corridor.

Then she whispered something.

I almost didn't hear it.

"Richard would never have allowed this.""

I turned.

"Richard did allow it. He wrote it down. You just assumed nobody would ever read it.""

The delivery lasted four hours.

Rebecca sat beside me in the waiting room.

Claire had gone downstairs to speak with the hospital's legal department.

Daniel remained at the far end of the corridor.

Diane was gone.

At 11:26 p.m., a nurse appeared.

"She's here.""

I stood so quickly my chair fell backward.

"Is the baby okay?""

The nurse smiled.

"She's small, but she's breathing on her own. Your friend is resting.""

Rebecca covered her mouth.

I began to cry.

A little girl.

Vanessa had given birth to a daughter.

When I entered the room, Vanessa was holding the baby against her chest.

Her eyes were exhausted, but she was smiling.

"She's beautiful," I whispered.

Vanessa looked down.

"Her name is Grace.""

I sat beside her.

"That's perfect.""

She adjusted the blanket.

"Daniel hasn't held her yet.""

"That's your decision.""

Vanessa nodded.

"I need time.""

I looked at the baby.

Her tiny fingers curled around Vanessa's thumb.

For a moment, I imagined Eli and Isaiah meeting their new sister someday.

Not as heirs.

Not as evidence.

Just children.

Vanessa looked at me.

"Amara?""

"Yes?""

"I want you to know something. I never wanted to take your place.""

I swallowed.

"I know.""

"I loved those boys. I still do. But I know they're yours.""

I took her hand.

"You helped them survive a time when I didn't even know they existed.""

She cried quietly.

"I wish things had been different.""

"So do I.""

Then she looked toward the door.

"There's something Daniel told me before the delivery.""

"What?""

"He said Diane has been hiding one final document.""

I frowned.

"What document?""

Vanessa shifted the baby carefully.

"A letter from Richard's attorney. The original instructions for the trust.""

I felt my heart quicken.

"Where is it?""

"Daniel said his mother keeps it in the safe at the family estate.""

I looked at Claire, who had just entered the room.

She heard the last sentence.

"Then we need to find it.""

Vanessa lowered her voice.

"There's a problem.""

"What?""

She looked directly at me.

"Daniel said the letter names the person Diane was supposed to keep away from the children.""

My stomach tightened.

"Who?""

Vanessa's eyes filled.

"Not you, Amara.""

I stared at her.

"Then who?""

May you like

She whispered:

"Your mother.""
