Chapter 9: The Hospital Report That Destroyed Two Mothers
I didn't sleep that night.
The photograph Daniel had given me lay on the dining table.
I had examined it so many times that I could almost recite every detail.
Vanessa was sitting beside Isaiah's hospital bed.
Her face was pale.
One hand rested on the little boy's blanket.
Eli stood beside her, holding a stuffed rabbit.
There was nothing in the photograph that suggested abuse.
Nothing.
But the medical report attached to the back told a different story.
It claimed that Isaiah had suffered injuries consistent with a serious fall caused by negligent supervision.
The report also contained a statement allegedly made by Vanessa.
I became frustrated with the child and failed to prevent the incident.
I read the sentence again.
It sounded nothing like her.
The next morning, I called Claire.
"Can you meet me?""
"What's happened?""
"I have the hospital report Daniel gave me.""
She went quiet.
"Bring it immediately.""
Claire examined the document for nearly twenty minutes.
Then she picked up her phone.
"Amara, I need you to answer something honestly.""
"All right.""
"Have you shown this to anyone besides me?""
"No.""
"Good. We need to verify the document before drawing conclusions.""
She placed it beside the original fertility records.
"Look at the date.""
I leaned forward.
The report had been created three years earlier.
"What's wrong with it?""
Claire pointed to the hospital department number.
"This department didn't exist under that name until the following year.""
I frowned.
"What?""
"The hospital reorganized its pediatric services. The new department name was introduced twelve months after this report was supposedly written.""
I stared at the paper.
"So someone changed it?""
"Possibly. Or the document was recreated later using outdated information.""
She examined the signature.
"Martin Wells was not a physician. He was a clinic administrator.""
My stomach tightened.
"Why would his signature appear on a hospital report?""
"Exactly.""
Claire picked up her phone.
"I'm contacting the hospital's legal department.""
I sat back.
"Could Diane have forged the entire thing?""
"We don't know yet.""
"But she had access to the boys.""
Claire nodded.
"And she had a financial motive to remove Vanessa from the arrangement.""
I looked toward the window.
"Then we need to find out what happened that night.""
Vanessa agreed to meet us at Claire's office.
She arrived with Rebecca and a small folder.
When Claire placed the report on the table, Vanessa began trembling.
"That's the document they used against me.""
"Did you ever see the original?"" Claire asked.
"No. Diane told me the hospital had filed a safeguarding report. Daniel said I should cooperate because it would help us get the boys home faster.""
"Did you make the statement recorded here?""
Vanessa shook her head.
"Never.""
Claire turned the page.
"Did you sign this?""
Vanessa looked at the signature.
"No.""
She pulled another document from her folder.
It was a statement she had submitted to social services at the time.
Claire compared the signatures.
They were completely different.
Vanessa covered her mouth.
"She forged my signature.""
I looked at her.
"Why didn't you tell anyone?""
"I did!""
Her voice broke.
"I told the social worker. I told Daniel. I told the hospital. Everyone kept saying the report had been verified.""
Rebecca took her sister's hand.
Vanessa wiped her cheeks.
"Daniel told me I was imagining things. He said I was emotional because of the pregnancy.""
I felt something familiar twist inside me.
That was exactly what Daniel had done to me.
Every time I questioned something, he had told me I was overreacting.
Every time Diane humiliated me, he had asked me to be patient.
Vanessa looked at me.
"I should have known.""
I shook my head.
"She made sure neither of us knew.""
Vanessa began crying harder.
"I was their mother for three years.""
I sat beside her.
"I know.""
"Then one day, I was told I couldn't see them.""
I took her hand.
For a moment, we sat together without speaking.
Two women who had been placed on opposite sides of a story neither had written.
Claire eventually broke the silence.
"Vanessa, do you remember anyone visiting you at the hospital the night Isaiah was injured?""
She nodded.
"Martin Wells.""
My head snapped up.
"Martin?""
"Yes. He came with Diane.""
Claire leaned forward.
"What did he say?""
Vanessa closed her eyes.
"He told me the boys' records had been transferred to a private medical file. He said it was necessary because of the fertility arrangement.""
"Did he ask you to sign anything?""
"Yes. He gave me several pages.""
"Did you read them?""
"I tried, but Diane kept saying the paperwork was urgent.""
Vanessa opened her folder and removed an old photograph.
It showed a hospital corridor.
Diane was standing near a nurses' station.
Martin Wells stood beside her.
A third person was visible in the background.
A woman wearing a white coat.
I leaned closer.
"Who is that?""
Vanessa looked at the photograph.
"I don't know her name. But I remember her.""
Claire studied the image.
"Could she have been a nurse?""
"I don't think so. She was the person who examined Isaiah.""
I looked again.
The woman's face was partly turned away.
But there was something familiar about her.
Then Vanessa said:
"She told me Isaiah's injuries were accidental. She said there was no reason to involve social services.""
Claire immediately took out her phone.
"Do you remember what hospital this was?""
"St. Mary's.""
Claire searched her notes.
"Was Dr. Carter involved?""
Vanessa shook her head.
"No. The woman introduced herself as Dr. Evelyn Shaw.""
Claire stopped typing.
I looked at her.
"What?""
She turned the laptop toward us.
A search result showed an archived medical directory.
*Dr. Evelyn Shaw — Pediatric Consultant.*
Beneath it was another entry.
*Former Medical Director, Bennett Children's Foundation.*
I stared at the screen.
"What's the Bennett Children's Foundation?""
Claire opened another file.
"It was established by Diane after Richard died.""
Vanessa looked confused.
"Why would a pediatric doctor be connected to her foundation?""
Claire didn't answer immediately.
Then she said:
"Because the foundation funded the private medical program used during the twins' original transfer.""
I felt cold.
Everything was connected.
The clinic.
The hospital.
The trust.
The foundation.
Diane had built an entire network of people who owed her money, favors, or professional opportunities.
And she had used that network to control the lives of two children.
Two days later, Claire received a response from the hospital.
The original medical report had been located.
But it wasn't the report Daniel had given me.
The original stated that Isaiah had suffered a minor injury after falling while playing.
There was no allegation of abuse.
No statement from Vanessa admitting negligence.
And no recommendation that the children be removed from her care.
The document had been altered.
The hospital had also confirmed that the signature attributed to its pediatric consultant did not match the original physician's signature.
Claire placed the two reports side by side.
"This is enough to request a formal investigation.""
I looked at the altered version.
"Can we prove Diane did it?""
"Not yet. But the hospital has identified the person who accessed the record.""
"Who?""
Claire turned the page.
A user account appeared.
*ADMINISTRATOR: MARTIN WELLS.*
I felt my stomach drop.
"Martin altered the report?""
"His account was used. That doesn't prove he personally made the changes, but it establishes that his credentials were involved.""
I remembered his phone call.
His tired voice.
His claim that he had objected to the embryo transfer.
Had he been telling the truth?
Or had he been trying to protect himself?
I called him.
He answered after several rings.
"Ms. Bennett.""
"Martin, I need you to explain something.""
"What is it?""
"The hospital report about Isaiah.""
Silence.
Then he said:
"I wondered when you'd find that.""
My fingers tightened around the phone.
"Did you alter it?""
"No.""
"Your account was used.""
"I know.""
"Then who used it?""
He exhaled.
"Diane had access to my credentials during the final months of my employment. She told me it was necessary for the foundation's audit.""
"Did you know she was using them to alter medical records?""
"No.""
"Why should I believe you?""
He didn't answer.
Then he said:
"Because I have something you haven't seen.""
"What?""
"A recording.""
I stopped breathing.
"What recording?""
"The meeting between Diane, Daniel, and the clinic director. The one where they discussed the embryos.""
"Why do you have it?""
"Because I knew something was wrong. I wanted proof that I had raised concerns.""
I looked at Claire.
She had heard enough to understand.
"Where is it?"" I asked.
"In a storage account. I can provide it to your attorney.""
"Martin, does it mention my name?""
He hesitated.
"Yes.""
"Does it explain why Diane wanted the children?""
Another pause.
"Yes.""
My throat tightened.
"Then send it.""
"I will.""
He ended the call.
Claire immediately contacted the hospital's legal department and requested that the recording be preserved as evidence.
I sat motionless.
For the first time, I felt that we were getting closer to the person who had planned everything.
Then my phone rang.
It was Vanessa.
Her voice was frantic.
"Amara, you need to come to my house.""
"What happened?""
"Daniel found out I've been speaking to you.""
"Is he there?""
"No. But his mother came.""
I stood.
"What did she do?""
Vanessa began crying.
"She took something from my study.""
"What?""
"The original trust agreement.""
I looked at Claire.
"Why does she want it?""
Vanessa whispered:
"Because I found the page that explains what happens if the children are legally adopted by someone outside the Bennett family.""
My stomach tightened.
"What does it say?""
Vanessa's voice dropped to almost nothing.
"It says the trust must be transferred to their legal mother.""
I closed my eyes.
"That's me.""
"No, Amara. That's the problem.""
"What do you mean?""
Vanessa began crying again.
"There's a clause that says the legal mother must also be the person named in the original embryo agreement.""
I couldn't speak.
The original agreement had named Vanessa.
Even though her signature might have been forged.
Even though the entire arrangement had been unauthorized.
And Diane had just stolen the document that could prove it.
Claire took the phone from my hand.
"Vanessa, listen carefully. Do not confront Diane. We're coming to you.""
But before she could end the call, Vanessa said something else.
"There's one more thing.""
"What?""
"I found a letter from Richard Bennett.""
Claire froze.
"What letter?""
Vanessa's voice trembled.
"It says Diane wasn't supposed to control the trust forever.""
I looked at Claire.
She slowly lowered the phone.
Then Vanessa whispered the final sentence.
"Richard left everything to the boys only if their biological mother was the one raising them.""
For several seconds, nobody moved.
Then Claire closed her eyes.
"That explains everything.""
I stared at her.
"What does it explain?""
She looked at me.
"Why Diane needed to keep you away from your sons.""
And suddenly, the inheritance wasn't simply about money.
May you like
It was about the one thing Diane had never been willing to surrender.
Control.
