Chapter 6: The Agreement Signed Behind My Back

Nobody moved.

The pianist had stopped playing.

The waiters stood near the ballroom doors, unsure whether to continue serving drinks.

Vanessa stared at Daniel as if she had never seen him before.

"What did you just say?""

Daniel rubbed both hands over his face.

"My mother wanted the children to remain under her control.""

Diane stepped forward.

"That's a lie.""

He turned toward her.

"Mom, stop.""

"You ungrateful boy!""

Diane pointed at him.

"Everything I did was for this family.""

I looked at her.

"You stole my embryos.""

"I arranged a solution!""

"You forged my consent.""

"I protected the children!""

My voice rose.

"From their own mother?""

Diane's face twisted.

"You were unstable. You were obsessed with becoming pregnant. You couldn't accept reality.""

I felt Olivia's hand touch my back.

I took a breath.

"Which reality, Diane? The one where you told me I was defective while secretly arranging for another woman to carry my children?""

She looked away.

Vanessa sank into a chair.

"Daniel, I need you to tell me what's happening.""

He crouched beside her.

"Please, let me explain.""

She pulled her hand away.

"Did you know those boys were yours?""

He nodded.

"Yes.""

"Before we got married?""

"Yes.""

Vanessa's eyes filled.

"And you told me they were adopted through a private arrangement?""

Daniel looked down.

"That's what my mother told me to say.""

Vanessa laughed once.

It was a broken, disbelieving sound.

"You let me raise two children without telling me they had a biological mother who was still alive?""

Diane stepped in.

"Vanessa, you were happy with the boys.""

"That isn't the point!""

Vanessa stood, trembling.

"Do you understand what you're saying? I thought I was giving two little boys a home. I thought their mother had voluntarily given them up.""

I felt something twist inside me.

For the first time, I looked at Vanessa without seeing only the woman who had replaced me.

I saw someone who might also have been lied to.

But that didn't erase what had happened.

I approached her slowly.

"Vanessa, did you know the embryos came from my treatment?""

She looked at me.

"No.""

"Did Daniel tell you my name?""

She shook her head.

"He said the biological parents had agreed to a confidential arrangement.""

I swallowed.

"Did he tell you I had been trying to become pregnant for seven years?""

Her eyes filled again.

"No.""

Diane interrupted.

"That's enough. This conversation is over.""

I turned toward her.

"No, Diane. It isn't.""

I removed another paper from the folder.

It was a copy of the agreement Martin Wells had preserved.

"I have a copy of the original arrangement.""

Diane's expression tightened.

I read the relevant section aloud.

"The intended arrangement required the children to remain within the Bennett family, with Diane Bennett designated as the preferred guardian in the event of parental incapacity.""

Vanessa looked at her.

"Why were you named as their guardian?""

Diane folded her arms.

"Because I was the most responsible adult.""

Daniel shook his head.

"Mom, you told me it was only temporary.""

Diane turned toward him.

"It was supposed to be temporary.""

"Then why did you arrange the guardianship clause?""

"Because you were young and irresponsible!""

Daniel's voice cracked.

"They were my sons!""

"And you couldn't even manage your marriage!""

The words landed like a slap.

I watched Daniel's face.

For years, he had allowed Diane to speak to me that way.

Now he was finally receiving the same treatment.

Vanessa stepped away from both of them.

"I need some air.""

A woman approached her.

It was Vanessa's sister, Rebecca.

She gently took her arm.

"Come with me.""

Vanessa looked at me.

"Amara, I'm sorry.""

I didn't answer immediately.

There were too many things to say.

Too many years of pain.

Finally, I said, "I believe you didn't know everything. But I need the truth before I can decide what to believe.""

She nodded and allowed Rebecca to lead her toward the side entrance.

Diane watched them leave.

Then she turned on me.

"You've ruined this entire day.""

I looked at the shattered champagne glass still lying near the entrance.

"No, Diane. I just brought the truth into a room where you expected everyone to celebrate your lies.""

She moved closer.

"You think a DNA test makes you their mother?""

I stared at her.

"They call me Mommy.""

"They were supposed to be raised by us.""

"They were abandoned in a system you helped create.""

Her eyes narrowed.

"Be careful, Amara.""

I tilted my head.

"Is that a threat?""

She leaned closer.

"You have no idea what you're dealing with.""

I almost smiled.

"Actually, I think I'm beginning to understand.""

At that moment, a man in a dark suit approached.

"Ms. Bennett?""

I turned.

"Yes?""

He introduced himself as Robert Hayes, an attorney representing the Bennett family trust.

"I believe we should discuss the children's legal status.""

My stomach tightened.

"What about it?""

He glanced toward Diane.

"Mrs. Bennett has asked me to clarify certain provisions relating to the twins.""

Diane straightened.

"Thank you, Robert.""

I looked between them.

"What provisions?""

Robert opened a leather folder.

"Several years ago, a trust was established for the benefit of two minor children. The trust contains substantial assets and includes conditions relating to their guardianship.""

"Who established it?""

"Diane Bennett.""

I stared at him.

"Why?""

He glanced toward Daniel.

"That is a matter the family has not fully discussed.""

I folded my arms.

"Then perhaps now is a good time.""

Robert hesitated.

"The trust was created before the children's birth. It includes a provision that grants Mrs. Bennett significant authority over certain financial and guardianship decisions.""

"Can she take my children?""

"That would depend on the applicable custody orders and the validity of the underlying agreements.""

I felt Olivia stiffen beside me.

I turned toward Robert.

"The children are legally placed with me. I'm their adoptive mother.""

He nodded.

"I understand.""

"Then I suggest you communicate with my attorney.""

"Of course.""

He handed me a business card.

As I took it, a folded sheet slipped from his folder and landed on the floor.

I bent down and picked it up.

Robert reached for it.

"That's a confidential document.""

I looked at the heading.

*BENNETT FAMILY TRUST — BENEFICIARY SCHEDULE.*

Two names appeared beneath it.

Eli Bennett.

Isaiah Bennett.

I looked at the date.

The trust had been established before either boy was born.

Below their names was a third line.

*Contingency beneficiary: Daniel Bennett.*

I frowned.

"Why would Daniel be a contingency beneficiary?""

Robert took the paper from my hand.

"That's not something I can discuss here.""

Diane stepped forward.

"Robert, leave.""

He closed the folder.

"Mrs. Bennett, I believe you should speak with your own counsel.""

Then he walked away.

I turned toward Daniel.

"What is this trust?""

Daniel looked exhausted.

"I don't know everything.""

"That's convenient.""

He shook his head.

"Amara, please. I didn't create it.""

"But you knew it existed.""

He didn't answer.

I watched his face.

Then I noticed something strange.

Diane wasn't looking at Daniel.

She was looking at the two boys.

Her expression wasn't simply angry.

It was calculating.

She approached Eli.

"Hello, sweetheart.""

Eli immediately moved behind my leg.

Diane bent down.

"I'm your grandmother.""

Eli looked up at me.

"Mommy?""

I put my hand on his shoulder.

"You don't have to go anywhere, sweetheart.""

Diane straightened.

"Don't turn them against their family.""

I met her eyes.

"They already know who makes them feel safe.""

For a moment, her mask slipped.

Then she said something I would never forget.

"You may have won this little performance, Amara. But you haven't won the inheritance.""

I felt the blood drain from my face.

"What inheritance?""

Diane smiled faintly.

Then she walked away.

Olivia leaned toward me.

"Amara, we need to leave.""

I nodded.

I gathered the boys and headed toward the ballroom doors.

But before we reached them, Daniel called after me.

"Amara!""

I stopped.

He approached slowly.

"Please. Don't let my mother get near the boys.""

I stared at him.

"You had three years to protect them.""

"I know.""

"You had seven years to protect me.""

His eyes filled.

"I know.""

I looked at the man who had once promised me a daughter and a son.

Now two little boys were holding my hands, and he was asking me to protect them from the very woman he had helped deceive me for.

I turned away.

As we reached the lobby, my phone vibrated.

It was a message from Claire, my attorney.

Amara, I reviewed the trust documents Robert sent over. We need to speak immediately. The trust contains a provision that could explain why Diane arranged the embryo transfer.

A second message appeared.

There is also a separate document naming someone else as the children's intended legal mother.

I stopped walking.

My heart began pounding.

I typed back.

Who?

Claire's response arrived almost immediately.

Vanessa.

Then another message appeared.

But the signature on that document is not hers either.

I looked through the ballroom doors.

Diane was standing beside Daniel, speaking urgently into his ear.

And suddenly, I understood.

The stolen embryos were only the beginning.

Someone had forged more than one signature.

And the person who had been planning to control my sons before they were even born might have had an entirely different reason for wanting them.

I tightened my grip on Eli and Isaiah's hands.

May you like

Whatever came next, I would not let anyone turn my children into property.

Not even their grandmother.
