Chapter 4: The Secret Diane Tried to Bury

The morning of the baby shower, I received a phone call that changed everything I thought I knew about my children.

I was standing in my kitchen, packing snacks for Eli and Isaiah, when Dr. Carter called.

"Amara, I have the final DNA results.""

I stopped folding a napkin.

"Are they positive?""

"Yes.""

I closed my eyes.

"Both boys?""

"Both boys. The testing confirms that you are their biological mother.""

My knees weakened.

I grabbed the kitchen counter.

"And Daniel?""

There was a pause.

"The results establish biological paternity as well.""

I looked toward the living room.

Eli was trying to convince Isaiah that dinosaurs had once lived in our backyard.

My boys.

Our boys.

For three years, I had been making their lunches, kissing their scraped knees, and singing them to sleep.

Daniel had been their biological father all along.

And he had allowed me to believe I was incapable of giving him a family.

"Dr. Carter," I whispered, "why would he do this?""

"I've reviewed additional documents since we last spoke. There is evidence that the original transfer arrangement was deliberately concealed from you.""

"By Daniel?""

"His name appears on several approvals. But Diane's involvement is more extensive than we initially understood.""

I sat down.

"What did she do?""

Dr. Carter opened her file.

"She arranged the financial payments to the recipient. She also contacted our clinic several times about the storage and transfer arrangements.""

"Did she know Vanessa?""

"That is what the correspondence suggests.""

I felt cold.

"How long had Vanessa known Daniel?""

"According to the dates, they had been in contact before your divorce was finalized.""

I stared at the wall.

The woman who had publicly celebrated my former husband's new marriage had apparently been involved in the destruction of my old one.

"There's another document," Dr. Carter continued.

"A letter from Diane to the clinic's former administrator.""

"What does it say?""

"She requested that all future correspondence about the embryos be directed to her private address. She also instructed the administrator not to contact you.""

I covered my mouth.

"She had no right.""

"No. And that's one of the reasons our compliance department is treating this matter seriously.""

"Can I have a copy?""

"Your attorney has already requested the relevant records. I would advise you to let the legal process continue.""

After the call, I remained seated for several minutes.

Then I opened my laptop.

I searched for the name of the clinic administrator mentioned in the documents.

His name was Martin Wells.

He had retired the previous year.

I found an old professional profile and sent him a short message.

My name is Amara Bennett. I was a patient at your clinic several years ago. I believe my reproductive records were altered without my consent. I would appreciate the opportunity to speak with you.

I didn't expect a response.

But twenty minutes later, my inbox chimed.

*Ms. Bennett, I remember your case. I cannot discuss confidential medical matters through email.

However, I retained copies of correspondence related to an internal dispute. Please contact me through the number below.*

My hands began shaking.

I called immediately.

An older man answered.

"Martin Wells.""

"Mr. Wells, this is Amara Bennett.""

"I know who you are.""

His voice was tired.

"Are you aware of what happened to your embryos?""

"I am.""

He sighed.

"Then you should know that I objected to the transfer.""

My heart stopped.

"You objected?""

"Your consent wasn't properly documented. I raised the issue with the clinic's director.""

"What happened?""

"I was told the matter had been approved by senior management.""

"By whom?""

He hesitated.

"Diane Bennett had considerable influence with the people who ran the clinic. She was a major donor to one of our research programs.""

I closed my eyes.

"Did Daniel know?""

"Daniel attended a meeting with her. I remember because he brought a lawyer.""

A lawyer.

Not a husband accompanying his wife to a medical appointment.

A man arranging something behind her back.

"Why didn't anyone tell me?""

"I tried to raise concerns. I was instructed to stay out of the matter.""

"By the director?""

"Yes.""

I gripped the phone.

"Do you have proof?""

"I kept copies of the correspondence. I also kept a record of the meeting.""

"Can you send them to my attorney?""

"Yes. But there's something you should understand, Ms. Bennett.""

"What?""

"Your former mother-in-law wasn't simply trying to arrange a pregnancy.""

I went completely still.

"What do you mean?""

"She specifically requested that the resulting children remain within her family, regardless of what happened to your marriage.""

My throat tightened.

"She wanted my children?""

"That's how it appeared to me.""

I couldn't speak.

Martin continued.

"She also asked whether the original genetic parent could be excluded from future legal proceedings.""

I ended the call after thanking him.

For several minutes, I stared at my phone.

Then I looked at the twins.

Isaiah had fallen asleep on the couch, one hand still holding his red toy car.

Eli was sitting beside him, carefully arranging a blanket over his brother.

I walked over and kissed both their foreheads.

No one was taking them from me.

Not again.

At noon, Olivia arrived.

She found me sitting at the dining table with the new documents.

"Have you spoken to the lawyer?""

"Yes. She wants me to preserve everything and avoid making accusations publicly until the investigation is complete.""

"Good.""

I looked up.

"Olivia, Diane planned this.""

She pulled out a chair.

"What exactly did you find?""

I told her about Martin's call.

By the time I finished, Olivia was visibly angry.

"She wanted to take your embryos, give them to Vanessa, and keep the children in the family?""

"That's what the evidence suggests.""

"And Daniel agreed?""

I nodded.

Olivia shook her head.

"That is beyond cruel.""

I looked at the clock.

The baby shower was beginning in two hours.

"Are you still going?"" she asked.

"Yes.""

"Why?""

I picked up the DNA report.

"Because I want Daniel to look at his sons.""

Olivia stared at me.

"And what if he denies everything?""

I slipped the report into a protective envelope.

"Then I'll show him the evidence.""

"What if Diane tries to cause a scene?""

I almost smiled.

"She has spent seven years making scenes at my expense. Today, she can answer a few questions.""

At that moment, Eli appeared in the doorway.

"Mommy, are we late?""

I smiled and crouched.

"Not yet, sweetheart.""

He held up his jacket.

"Can you help me?""

"Of course.""

As I buttoned his little navy coat, he touched my cheek.

"You're sad.""

I shook my head.

"I'm okay.""

"Then why are your eyes wet?""

I kissed his forehead.

"Sometimes Mommy cries when she's very happy.""

He considered that explanation.

Then he hugged me.

And I held him a little longer than usual.

Because that afternoon, the people who had stolen our beginning were going to discover that they had not stolen our future.

But just as I finished getting the boys ready, my phone rang again.

It was my attorney, Claire.

"Amara, I've received the correspondence from Martin Wells.""

"Is it enough?""

"There's something in it you need to see.""

"What?""

Claire lowered her voice.

"The original agreement contains a clause stating that the children were to be raised by Daniel and Vanessa, with Diane designated as their legal guardian in the event of either parent's incapacity.""

I frowned.

"Why would they need that?""

"Because Diane anticipated that something might happen.""

"What kind of thing?""

Claire was silent for a moment.

"Amara, the agreement was signed six weeks before the twins were born.""

Then she said something that made my blood run cold.

May you like

"Your former mother-in-law had already prepared a plan for what would happen if Vanessa couldn't keep the children.""

And somehow, I knew that plan had nothing to do with me.
