Chapter 5: The Woman Who Called Herself Their Grandmother

The Grand Sterling Hotel looked exactly as I remembered it.

Crystal chandeliers hung from the ceiling. White roses covered the entrance tables. A pianist played softly beside a staircase decorated with gold ribbons.

Daniel and I had celebrated our seventh anniversary there.

He had kissed my hand beneath the same chandelier and promised that our family would eventually have everything we dreamed of.

Now the ballroom was decorated for the baby shower he was hosting with another woman.

I parked outside and checked the boys' collars.

"Are we here?"" Isaiah asked.

"Yes.""

"Is there cake?""

I smiled.

"You're very interested in cake today.""

He nodded seriously.

"Because cake is important.""

Eli looked through the window.

"That's a big building.""

"It is.""

"Do people live here?""

"No, sweetheart. They have parties here.""

He turned toward me.

"Like birthdays?""

"Something like that.""

I helped them out of their seats.

Olivia had insisted on coming, and I was grateful.

She carried the small bag containing their snacks and spare clothes.

"Ready?"" she asked.

I took a breath.

"Ready.""

We walked through the hotel lobby.

A few people recognized me.

One woman from Daniel's old business circle stopped near the elevators.

"Amara?""

I turned.

"Hello, Margaret.""

She looked at the boys.

Then at me.

"Oh. I didn't realize you were coming.""

"Neither did I, until recently.""

Her expression became uncomfortable.

She stepped aside.

We reached the ballroom entrance.

A hotel employee opened the doors.

Music floated into the corridor.

Then the music stopped.

Daniel was standing near the stage, holding a microphone.

Vanessa sat beside him in a pale pink dress, one hand resting on her pregnant stomach.

Diane stood near the cake table, surrounded by women wearing expensive dresses and carrying champagne glasses.

The moment she saw me, her expression changed.

Then she saw Eli and Isaiah.

Her champagne glass slipped from her fingers.

It shattered against the marble floor.

Everyone turned.

Daniel lowered the microphone.

"Amara?""

Vanessa looked from me to the boys.

"What is this?""

I walked forward.

Eli held my left hand.

Isaiah held my right.

Diane recovered first.

"You have some nerve showing up here.""

I stopped a few feet away.

"Hello, Diane.""

"This is a private family event.""

I glanced around the ballroom.

"Then perhaps you should explain why my children weren't invited.""

Her face drained of color.

Daniel stepped toward us.

"Amara, we need to talk.""

"We've had seven years to talk, Daniel.""

His eyes moved toward the boys.

"Where did you get them?""

I stared at him.

"That's an interesting question coming from their biological father.""

A woman near the cake table gasped.

Vanessa stood.

"What did she just say?""

Daniel looked at me.

"Don't do this.""

I reached into my handbag.

"Do what? Tell the truth?""

I pulled out the certified DNA report.

Daniel's face changed when he saw the laboratory seal.

Diane took a step backward.

"Put that away.""

I turned toward her.

"Why? Are you afraid people might finally learn what you did?""

Vanessa looked at Daniel.

"What is she talking about?""

He didn't answer.

I held the report in front of him.

"These boys are biologically yours, Daniel. And they're mine.""

The room erupted into whispers.

Vanessa stared at the document.

"No.""

Daniel rubbed his forehead.

"Amara, listen.""

"No. You listen.""

My voice remained steady.

"You told me our embryos had been destroyed. You watched me cry over something you knew wasn't true.""

"That's not what happened.""

"Then explain it.""

He looked around the ballroom.

"Not here.""

I laughed bitterly.

"You were comfortable discussing my infertility here. Your mother announced to everyone that I was incapable of giving you a family. Remember?""

Diane raised her voice.

"That was years ago!""

"And you were arranging an unauthorized embryo transfer at the same time.""

Several guests moved closer.

Vanessa's face had become pale.

She turned toward Diane.

"What is she talking about?""

Diane grabbed her arm.

"Vanessa, don't listen to her.""

Vanessa pulled away.

"Why are there two little boys who look exactly like Daniel?""

I opened the folder.

"Because two embryos were transferred from my medical storage without my consent.""

Daniel finally spoke.

"Amara, this is complicated.""

I looked at him.

"Then simplify it.""

He opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

Isaiah tugged at my dress.

"Mommy?""

I immediately crouched.

"Yes, baby?""

"Why is everyone looking at us?""

I brushed his hair away from his forehead.

"Because they weren't expecting to see you.""

Eli looked at Daniel.

Then he pointed.

"Mommy, that's the man in your old picture.""

Daniel's eyes filled with tears.

He crouched slightly.

"Hello, Eli.""

Eli stepped behind my leg.

"How do you know my name?""

Daniel froze.

Vanessa looked at him.

"You know these children?""

He swallowed.

"I...""

She stepped away from him.

"Daniel, answer me.""

Diane suddenly moved between us.

"Enough! Those boys belong with their family.""

I stood.

"They are with their family.""

She pointed toward Daniel.

"They are Bennett children!""

I looked directly at her.

"They are my children.""

Diane's jaw tightened.

"You were never supposed to have them.""

The words escaped her before she could stop herself.

Silence spread through the room.

I felt my heart pounding.

"What did you just say?""

Diane looked around.

"I didn't mean—"

"You said I was never supposed to have them.""

She lifted her chin.

"Because you weren't part of the arrangement.""

Vanessa stared at her.

"What arrangement?""

Diane's face changed.

Daniel grabbed his mother's elbow.

"Mom. Stop.""

I watched him.

That was the moment I realized the secret was even bigger than the stolen embryos.

Diane wasn't afraid of the DNA report.

She was afraid of what she might say next.

Vanessa stepped closer.

"Daniel, what arrangement?""

He turned toward her.

"Please, Vanessa.""

She looked down at her stomach.

"Are you telling me you knew these boys existed before we got married?""

He didn't answer.

Her eyes filled.

"How long?""

Diane interrupted.

"Vanessa, you need to calm down. You're pregnant.""

Vanessa turned sharply.

"Don't tell me to calm down!""

The microphone was still resting on the stage.

Someone had accidentally left it switched on.

Every word echoed through the ballroom.

I took out the second document.

The original authorization record.

"This is the signature used to approve the transfer. It isn't mine. The payment trail leads to Diane's private account.""

Diane lunged toward the papers.

Olivia stepped between us.

"Don't touch her.""

Diane glared at her.

"This is none of your business.""

Olivia folded her arms.

"Apparently, it's everyone's business now.""

Daniel moved closer to me.

"Amara, can we please speak privately?""

I shook my head.

"Not until you answer one question.""

He looked at me.

"Which question?""

"Why did you let me believe I couldn't have children when you knew the embryos had been transferred?""

His expression collapsed.

For the first time, he looked less like the confident businessman I had married and more like a frightened man who had run out of lies.

Then he whispered:

"Because my mother said she would destroy everything if I told you.""

Diane spun toward him.

"Daniel!""

Vanessa covered her mouth.

I stared at him.

"Destroy what?""

He looked at his mother.

Then at Vanessa.

Then back at me.

May you like

And finally, he said the words that made the entire room go silent.

"She told me the boys were supposed to be hers.""
