Chapter 2 - HIS MOTHER HAD BEEN STEALING FROM HIS CHILDRENDaniel did not sleep that night.

Emma told him everything.
Slowly.
Piece by piece.
Margaret had moved into the guest wing six months earlier after claiming she was lonely.
At first, she had been helpful.
She watched Oliver.
Held Grace.
Helped organize the house.
Then Daniel began traveling more.
That was when Margaret changed.
She criticized Emma constantly.
The food.
Her clothes.
Her parenting.
Her family background.
Emma came from a middle-class home in Ohio.
Margaret never let her forget it.
“You married above yourself,” she would say.
At first, Emma ignored it.
Then came the rules.
Dinner had to be served at a certain time.
Oliver was not allowed to make noise in certain rooms.
Emma was forbidden from using household staff for “personal laziness.”
That explained the kitchen.
Daniel frowned.
“We employ six people.”
Emma nodded.
“Your mother sent them home after the party.”
“Why?”
“She said I needed to learn gratitude.”
Daniel felt sick.
Then Emma explained the money.
After Grace was born, Daniel created a trust for both children.
Emma had limited administrative access.
Margaret offered to “help organize it.”
Emma believed she was assisting.
Instead, several withdrawals appeared.
Small at first.
Then larger.
“What amounts?”
Emma looked ashamed.
“About four hundred thousand total.”
Daniel stood so quickly the chair moved backward.
“Four hundred thousand dollars?”
“I thought maybe you authorized it.”
“I didn’t.”
“She said it was family investment planning.”
Daniel immediately opened his laptop.
Within twenty minutes, he confirmed it.
Three transfers.
One for $75,000.
One for $125,000.
One for $200,000.
All sent to a private investment entity.
Hayes Heritage Holdings.
Daniel knew the name.
The company belonged to his mother.
He stared at the screen.
“She stole from her grandchildren.”
Emma whispered:
“I didn’t know what to do.”
Daniel looked at her.
“Why didn’t you call me?”
Tears returned.
“She said if I told you, she would make you think I was unstable.”
Daniel stopped.
“What?”
“She said you were already stressed. That if I created problems, you might decide the children were better off with you.”
Daniel sat down.
His mother had not simply bullied Emma.
She had isolated her.
Threatened her.
Made her afraid to ask her own husband for help.
That realization hurt differently.
The next morning, Daniel called his attorney.
Then his private auditor.
Then the bank.
By noon, they found more.
The children’s trust was only one part.
Margaret had used old authorization privileges to move money from family accounts for almost two years.
Nearly $2.8 million.
Daniel stared at the report.
But the worst discovery was not the amount.
It was the destination.
One transfer went to a property company.
That company had purchased a house.
In Boston.
The listed resident:
Jonathan Hayes.
Daniel froze.
Jonathan was his younger brother.
The brother who supposedly moved to Europe five years earlier after a family fight.
Daniel had not seen him since.

His mother always said Jonathan wanted nothing to do with the family.
Apparently, that was another lie.
