Chapter 6 - OLIVER ASKED WHY GRANDMA HURT MOMMYChildren hear more than adults realize.

One evening, Oliver asked:

“Why did Grandma hit Mommy?”

Daniel froze.

Emma looked at him.

They had discussed how to explain it.

Simple.

Honest.

“Grandma made a very bad choice.”

Oliver frowned.

“Because Mommy was bad?”

Emma’s eyes filled.

Daniel knelt.

“No.”

“Then why?”

“Because sometimes adults do wrong things when they want control.”

Oliver thought.

“Is Grandma bad?”

Daniel chose carefully.

“Grandma has done bad things.”

“Do we still love her?”

That question was harder.

Emma answered.

“You can love someone and still need distance from them.”

Oliver nodded slowly.

“Like when I love the dog but he eats my crackers?”

Daniel almost laughed.

“Something like that.”

Oliver smiled.

Then hugged Emma.

“You’re not bad, Mommy.”

Emma cried.

Daniel looked away for a second.

No court ruling could give him what that moment did.

His family was healing.
