Chapter 4 - EMMA FINALLY TOLD THE WHOLE TRUTHBack home, Emma sat beside Daniel in bed.

Grace slept nearby.
Oliver was with the nanny.
Daniel asked:
“Was the slapping the worst of it?”
Emma looked away.
“No.”
His chest tightened.
“What was?”
“She locked me out once.”
“What?”
“In January.”
It had been freezing.
“She said I embarrassed her at dinner.”
“How long?”
“Forty minutes.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
Emma continued.
“She also took my phone twice.”
“Why?”
“So I couldn’t call you.”
Daniel felt rage.
But Emma touched his hand.
“I don’t need you angry.”
He looked at her.
“What do you need?”
“Believe me.”
That sentence destroyed him.
Because somewhere along the way, Emma had begun to believe that even her own husband might doubt her.
“I believe you.”
She started crying.
“I should have told you.”
“I should have made it easier for you to tell me.”
They sat quietly.
Then Daniel said:
“This is not happening again.”
Not a promise of revenge.
A promise of change.
He canceled his next month of travel.
Moved his office schedule.
Hired an independent family therapist.
Changed every financial authorization.
And most importantly, he asked Emma what she wanted.
Not what she needed.
What she wanted.
Her answer surprised him.

“I want this house to feel like ours.”
That became the real work.
