Emma said:

So he went.
Margaret looked smaller.
No jewelry.
No perfect posture.
She sat across from him.
“I was trying to hold the family together.”
Daniel stared.
“You hit my wife.”
Silence.
“You stole from my children.”
Silence.
“You controlled Jonathan’s inheritance.”
She looked down.
“I was afraid.”
“Of what?”
“Being irrelevant.”
There it was.
The truth.
Her husband died.
Her sons grew up.
Daniel built a life.
Jonathan left.
Margaret lost control.
So she created situations where people needed her.
Or feared her.
She mistook dependence for love.
Daniel said:
“You could have been loved without controlling us.”
Margaret cried.
“I know that now.”
He believed she meant it.
That did not erase anything.
She faced legal consequences.
Restitution.
Restricted contact.
