Chapter 2: The Man Behind the Folder
The stranger’s footsteps echoed across the marble floor.
Slow.
Confident.
Almost too confident.
The guests parted as he walked toward Ethan Calloway’s table, holding the black folder like it was a weapon.
Vanessa stared at him.
Her face had lost every trace of the arrogance she had worn all night.
“Damian,” she whispered.
The name traveled through the silence.
Ethan’s eyes narrowed.
“You know him.””
Vanessa looked back at Ethan too quickly.
“No. I mean… I know of him.””
The stranger stopped a few feet away.
He smiled.
A cold, practiced smile.
“Nice to finally meet you properly, Mr. Calloway.””
Ethan didn’t move.
“Who are you?””
The man extended a hand.
“Damian Cross.””
Ethan ignored the hand.
“I asked who you are.””
Damian slowly lowered his arm.
“Someone who can save you from making a very expensive mistake.””
Lily stood near the table, watching every movement.
Something about Damian bothered her.
It wasn’t just that he had been caught whispering about taking everything from Ethan.
It was the way he stood.
Like he had already won.
Ethan looked at Vanessa.
Then back at Damian.
“Why is my name on that folder?””
Damian glanced down.
“This?””
He tapped the folder lightly.
“This is the reason tonight is much more interesting than anyone expected.””
Vanessa stepped forward.
“Damian, stop.””
Everyone noticed.
Especially Ethan.
His eyes moved between them.
“You told me you barely knew him.””
Vanessa froze.
“I didn’t say that.””
“You did.””
“No, Ethan, you misunderstood.””
Damian gave a quiet laugh.
“She always does that.””
Vanessa turned sharply.
“Don’t.””
The single word carried something dangerous.
A warning.
But Damian didn’t care.
He opened the folder.
Inside were several documents.
He pulled out the first page and held it up.
“Calloway Holdings acquisition agreement.””
The guests whispered.
Ethan’s expression hardened.
“My company’s private documents don’t leave my office.””
Damian looked at Vanessa.
“Apparently, they do.””
Vanessa’s face changed.
Only slightly.
But Lily noticed.
She had spent years working jobs where people thought employees were invisible.
Invisible people saw everything.
The small nervous movements.
The fake smiles.
The moments when someone realized they had lost control.
And Vanessa had just realized it.
Ethan reached for the document.
Damian handed it over.
Ethan scanned the page.
His jaw tightened.
“What is this?””
Vanessa immediately stepped closer.
“Ethan, please. Let me explain.””
“Explain why there’s a document transferring ownership rights of my private investment accounts?””
The room erupted.
People began whispering louder.
A billionaire’s financial secrets were not supposed to become dinner entertainment.
Vanessa shook her head.
“That’s not real.””
Ethan looked at her.
“You were about to marry me.””
Her eyes softened.
“I love you.””
Nobody moved.
It was the kind of sentence that would have worked before.
Before the video.
Before the folder.
Before tonight.
Ethan’s voice became colder.
“Then why was another man discussing taking everything I own?””
Vanessa looked at Damian.
For the first time, she looked angry instead of afraid.
“You were supposed to wait.””
Damian smiled.
“There it is.””
Ethan looked at him.
“What does that mean?””
Damian leaned against the table.
“It means Vanessa has been losing patience.””
“Damian.””
“No, Vanessa. You wanted this moment.””
He turned toward Ethan.
“You should know who you’re dealing with.””
Vanessa’s eyes flashed.
“You’re making a mistake.””
Damian ignored her.
“She came to me six months ago.””
The crowd reacted.
Ethan didn’t blink.
Six months.
The words seemed heavier than anything else.
Vanessa had been sitting beside him.
Holding his hand.
Planning a future.
While secretly meeting another man.
“That’s a lie,” Vanessa said.
Damian smiled.
“You want to tell him about the offshore accounts?””
Silence.
Absolute silence.
Ethan slowly looked at Vanessa.
“What offshore accounts?””
Vanessa’s confidence cracked.
“Ethan…”
“What offshore accounts?””
She took a breath.
“You’re misunderstanding everything.””
Lily watched Ethan carefully.
She had expected anger.
Maybe shouting.
Instead, he became quiet.
That was somehow worse.
Powerful people rarely needed to raise their voices.
Ethan placed the document on the table.
“Why was my signature already copied?””
Vanessa looked away.
That was enough.
The guests started moving backward.
Some picked up their phones.
Some pretended not to stare.
But everyone was watching.
Everyone loved seeing powerful people fall.
Lily knew that better than anyone.
She had served enough wealthy guests to understand one thing.
Money could buy privacy.
But it could never buy silence forever.
Ethan turned to Lily.
“You said you saw someone touch my glass.””
“Yes.””
“Who?””
Lily hesitated.
The room waited.
“I don’t know who touched it.””
Vanessa immediately smiled.
“There. You see? She doesn’t even know.””
Lily looked at her.
“But I know where they stood.””
She took out her phone again.
“I checked the camera footage from the drink station after I noticed something was wrong.””
Damian’s expression changed.
Only briefly.
But Ethan saw it.
“What?””
Lily looked at Damian.
“He wasn’t alone.””
Damian’s smile disappeared.
The ballroom became silent again.
Lily turned the phone toward Ethan.
“There was another person.””
She played another clip.
This one was shorter.
The camera showed Damian standing near the bar.
Vanessa beside him.
And then, thirty seconds later, someone else entered the frame.
A man wearing a staff uniform.
He leaned toward the champagne tray.
Then walked away.
Ethan stared.
“Who is that?””
Nobody answered.
Then one of the guests gasped.
“I know him.””
Everyone looked toward an older man standing near the back.
He was one of Calloway Holdings’ board members.
Richard Hale.
A man who had worked with Ethan for fifteen years.
Richard’s face turned pale.
“That’s impossible.””
Ethan slowly turned.
“Richard.””
The older man forced a laugh.
“This is some kind of misunderstanding.””
But his hands were shaking.
Lily noticed.
So did Ethan.
“Come here.””
Richard didn’t move.
“Ethan, listen—”
“Come here.””
The command cut through the room.
Richard walked forward.
Slowly.
When he reached the table, Ethan stared at him.
“You knew?””
Richard swallowed.
“Knew what?””
“That someone was trying to take my company.””
Richard looked at Vanessa.
Then Damian.
Then down at the floor.
And that hesitation answered more than words could.
Ethan stepped back.
“How long?””
Richard closed his eyes.
“I never wanted it to go this far.””
Vanessa interrupted.
“Richard, don’t.””
But it was too late.
Ethan looked at him.
“How long?””
Richard whispered:
“Since the accident.””
The room went still.
Lily frowned.
Accident?
Ethan’s expression changed.
“What accident?””
Richard looked confused.
“You don’t remember?””
A cold feeling moved through the ballroom.
Ethan stared at him.
“Remember what?””
Nobody spoke.
Then Richard slowly pointed toward Lily.
“She doesn’t know either.””
Lily looked at him.
“What are you talking about?””
Richard’s face became filled with fear.
“The night you almost died…”
He paused.
“The night you lost three months of your memory.””
Ethan froze.
The entire room seemed to disappear.
Lily looked from Richard to Ethan.
Because she realized something.
Everyone in that ballroom knew a part of the story.
Everyone except the man at the center of it.
May you like
And Richard had just revealed the one thing Vanessa had spent months trying to hide.
Ethan’s missing memory.
