Chapter 3: The Memory They Buried
The ballroom did not feel like a place for celebration anymore.
The flowers, the music, the crystal glasses, the expensive suits and gowns—all of it suddenly looked like a carefully decorated stage hiding something rotten underneath.
Ethan Calloway stood completely still.
Three months.
That was what Richard Hale had said.
Three months of his life were missing.
And apparently, everyone around him knew except him.
Ethan looked at Richard with a calmness that made the older man look even more afraid.
“What accident?””
Richard opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
Ethan took one step closer.
“I asked you a question.””
Richard lowered his eyes.
“The car crash.””
The words landed heavily.
Lily watched Ethan’s face.
She expected confusion.
Maybe anger.
Instead, she saw something much more unsettling.
Fear.
Not the fear of being betrayed.
The fear of realizing something inside your own mind had been taken from you.
“When?”” Ethan asked.
Richard swallowed.
“Six months ago.””
Vanessa immediately stepped forward.
“That’s enough.””
Ethan turned toward her.
“No.””
His voice was quiet.
But everyone heard it.
“No more secrets.””
Vanessa’s expression softened.
“Ethan, you were hurt. You weren’t yourself.””
“Who told me that?””
She hesitated.
“I did.””
“Did you?””
The question made her freeze.
Lily noticed the small details.
Vanessa’s fingers tightened around her necklace.
Her eyes moved toward Damian for half a second.
A silent conversation.
A warning.
Ethan saw it.
“You two have been planning this.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“No.””
“Then why do you keep looking at him?””
“I’m looking at him because he’s lying.””
Damian laughed quietly.
“That’s interesting coming from you.””
Vanessa glared.
“Don’t.””
Ethan looked between them.
“How did I lose my memory?””
Nobody answered.
The silence became unbearable.
Finally, Richard spoke.
“You hit your head during the crash.””
Ethan looked at him.
“And?””
“You spent two weeks in the hospital.””
“And?””
Richard’s voice became lower.
“When you woke up, you didn’t remember everything.””
“What did I forget?””
Richard looked away.
“That’s complicated.””
Ethan stepped forward.
“No. It’s simple.””
His eyes moved across the room.
“You all knew something about me that I didn’t know.””
Nobody moved.
“So I’ll ask again.””
He looked directly at Vanessa.
“What did I forget?””
Vanessa’s face changed.
For a moment, Lily almost saw regret.
Almost.
Then it disappeared.
“You forgot how much I loved you.””
Ethan stared at her.
“That’s your answer?””
“You don’t understand.””
“No,” Ethan said.
“I don’t.””
Vanessa walked closer.
“When you woke up, you were different. You were confused. You didn’t remember the stress, the fights, the pressure. You didn’t remember how much you depended on me.””
Lily frowned.
Something about that explanation felt wrong.
Not because it was impossible.
Because Vanessa sounded like someone defending a story she had repeated many times.
Ethan noticed too.
“Did I love you before the accident?””
Vanessa froze.
The question was simple.
But it cut deeper than any accusation.
“Yes.””
“Did I ask you to marry me before the accident?””
“Yes.””
“Did I trust you?””
“Yes.””
“Then why were you stealing from me?””
Vanessa’s face went pale.
“I wasn’t.””
Ethan pointed at the documents.
“Your name is connected to these.””
Damian interrupted.
“Actually, Ethan, she wasn’t the only one.””
He pulled another paper from the folder.
“This is the part you really need to see.””
Vanessa’s eyes widened.
“No.””
Damian smiled.
“You were always so confident that he would never remember.””
Ethan took the paper.
Lily watched him read.
His face slowly changed.
“What is this?””
Damian leaned closer.
“The original agreement.””
Ethan looked up.
“Between who?””
Damian didn’t answer immediately.
Then he said:
“Between you and me.””
The room erupted again.
Ethan looked down at the document.
At the signature.
At the date.
At the name.
Damian Cross.
“What kind of agreement is this?””
Damian smiled.
“The kind that proves you trusted me before you forgot.””
Ethan’s fingers tightened around the paper.
“That doesn’t make sense.””
“It will.””
Damian looked around.
“You see, everyone thinks Vanessa was the mastermind.””
He glanced at her.
“She wasn’t.””
Vanessa looked furious.
“Don’t you dare.””
Damian ignored her.
“She was just impatient.””
Ethan looked at Vanessa.
“Impatient for what?””
Damian answered.
“For control.””
The word hung there.
Ethan looked back at the documents.
Lily could see the confusion on his face.
But there was something else.
A memory trying to break through.
He pressed his fingers against his temple.
Suddenly, a flash crossed his face.
A dark road.
Rain against glass.
A woman screaming.
A phone ringing.
Then nothing.
Ethan staggered slightly.
Lily reacted immediately.
“Are you okay?””
He looked at her.
For a second, his eyes seemed lost.
Then he whispered:
“I remember something.””
Everyone became silent.
Vanessa’s face changed.
“What?””
Ethan looked at her.
“I remember you.””
She took a step forward.
“Ethan…”
“But not the way you think.””
The room went cold.
He closed his eyes.
“I remember arguing.””
Vanessa stopped.
“I remember being angry.””
Her expression changed.
“And I remember saying I was going to expose someone.””
Damian’s smile disappeared.
Ethan opened his eyes.
“Who was I going to expose?””
Nobody answered.
Then Lily noticed something.
The untouched champagne glass was still sitting on the table.
The drink that started everything.
She looked at it.
Then at Ethan.
“Mr. Calloway.””
He turned.
“What?””
Lily pointed.
“Your glass.””
Everyone looked.
“What about it?””
“I don’t think the poison was meant to kill you.””
The room went silent.
Ethan stared.
“What?””
Lily stepped closer.
“I’ve worked events for years. I know how people behave when they’re trying to hide something.””
She pointed at the glass.
“Whoever touched your drink wasn’t trying to make you drink it.””
Damian frowned.
“Then what were they doing?””
Lily looked at the glass.
“They were making sure someone saw it.””
Ethan’s expression darkened.
A setup.
Not an assassination.
A message.
Someone wanted him scared.
Someone wanted him distracted.
Someone wanted him looking in the wrong direction.
Richard suddenly spoke.
“There was something else.””
Everyone turned.
Richard looked terrified.
“After the accident, Vanessa told us Ethan couldn’t remember the night before the crash.””
Ethan looked at him.
“The night before?””
Richard nodded.
“Yes.””
“What happened that night?””
Richard hesitated.
Then he looked at Vanessa.
“She found out you were meeting someone.””
Vanessa’s face drained.
Ethan stared.
“Meeting who?””
Richard didn’t answer.
Lily watched him.
Because Richard wasn’t looking at Ethan.
He was looking at her.
And that made no sense.
Until Richard spoke.
“The person you were going to meet…”
His voice trembled.
“Was Lily Carter.””
The entire ballroom went silent.
Lily felt the air leave her lungs.
“What?””
Ethan looked at her.
For the first time that night, not as a waitress.
Not as a stranger.
But as someone connected to a part of his life he could not remember.
Vanessa stepped backward.
“No.””
Damian’s expression changed completely.
Because he understood something before anyone else did.
The accident had not erased Ethan’s past.
May you like
Someone had removed it.
And Lily Carter was the one person who could bring it back.
