Chapter 9: The Secret Ethan Left Behind

The message stayed on the screen.

*TRUST THE PERSON WHO WAS NEVER SUPPOSED TO SURVIVE.*

Nobody spoke.

The words looked simple.

But they carried the weight of an entire missing year.

Ethan stared at his own handwriting.

His own face on the video.

His own voice warning him from the past.

It was like watching a stranger who somehow knew every secret he had forgotten.

“Who was never supposed to survive?”” Richard whispered.

No one answered.

Then Lily stepped closer to the screen.

Her face had gone pale.

“I think I know.””

Everyone looked at her.

Ethan turned.

“Who?””

Lily looked at the message.

Then at him.

“Me.””

The room went completely still.

Vanessa shook her head.

“No.””

Lily ignored her.

“The night before the accident… I wasn’t just investigating the company.””

Ethan watched her.

“What else?””

She closed her eyes.

Trying to pull the memory forward.

“I was investigating Daniel Voss.””

Richard nodded.

“Because he was the one handling security.””

“Yes.””

Lily looked at the video.

“But I found something else.””

“What?””

She looked at Ethan.

“I found out Daniel wasn’t working alone.””

Damian crossed his arms.

“With who?””

Lily looked toward Vanessa.

Everyone expected her to answer.

But she didn’t.

Instead, Lily whispered:

“With someone inside Ethan’s own family.””

A cold silence followed.

Ethan frowned.

“My family?””

Lily nodded slowly.

“I don’t know who.””

She touched her temple.

“I only remember the conversation.””

“Whose conversation?””

“Daniel’s.””

She looked at the screen.

“He was on the phone.””

The room waited.

“What did he say?””

Lily closed her eyes.

A memory returned.

A dark office.

A half-open door.

Daniel’s voice.

“She’s not the only problem. The family member knows too much.””

Lily opened her eyes.

“He said someone in your family knew about the plan.””

Richard looked shocked.

“That’s impossible.””

“Why?””

“Because Ethan’s family has nothing to do with the company.””

Ethan stared.

“Who?””

Nobody answered.

Then Damian spoke.

“Your brother.””

Ethan turned sharply.

“What?””

Damian looked uncomfortable.

For once.

“You had a brother.””

The words hit Ethan like a physical blow.

Lily looked at him.

“You didn’t remember?””

Ethan’s breathing changed.

“No.””

Richard looked away.

“You lost more than we thought.””

Ethan grabbed the edge of the table.

“My brother…”

His voice became quieter.

“What was his name?””

Damian looked at him.

“Alexander.””

The name echoed.

Alexander.

Another locked door.

Another missing piece.

Ethan closed his eyes.

And suddenly—

A boy running through a garden.

Two brothers laughing.

A promise.

“We’ll always protect each other.””

Then another memory.

A hospital room.

Someone crying.

Someone saying:

“Don’t tell Ethan yet.””

The image disappeared.

Ethan opened his eyes.

“He died.””

Nobody moved.

Richard looked surprised.

“You remembered?””

Ethan nodded slowly.

“My brother died.””

His voice cracked slightly.

“When?””

Richard answered softly.

“One year ago.””

Lily felt a chill.

One year.

The exact time Ethan had lost.

Ethan looked at Vanessa.

“You knew.””

She looked down.

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Because you couldn’t handle it.””

Ethan stared.

“You decided that?””

“You woke up after the crash asking for him.””

Silence.

“You didn’t remember the accident. You didn’t remember the investigation.””

Vanessa’s voice shook.

“But you remembered Alexander.””

Ethan looked confused.

“What happened to him?””

Nobody wanted to answer.

Finally, Richard said:

“Alexander was the person who discovered the financial fraud.””

Ethan looked at him.

“He knew?””

“Yes.””

“He helped me?””

Richard nodded.

“He helped Lily.””

Lily froze.

“Me?””

Richard looked at her.

“Yes.””

Ethan looked at Lily.

“What did you find?””

Lily swallowed.

“The proof.””

She walked toward the laptop.

“The reason Daniel wanted me gone.””

She opened another file.

Inside was a scanned document.

A contract.

A signature.

Alexander Calloway.

Ethan stared.

“What is that?””

Lily zoomed in.

“A transfer agreement.””

Richard looked closer.

Then his face changed.

“No…”

Ethan noticed.

“What?””

Richard pointed.

“This isn’t about taking your company.””

Everyone looked.

Richard continued.

“It’s about protecting it.””

Ethan frowned.

“What?””

Lily read the document.

“Alexander transferred his shares.””

“To who?””

She looked at the name.

And froze.

“Lily.””

Everyone stared.

“What?””

Lily shook her head.

“No.””

Ethan looked at her.

“Read it.””

Her voice trembled.

“The shares were placed under a trust.””

“And the beneficiary?””

She looked at him.

“Me.””

The room exploded into confusion.

Vanessa laughed.

Not because it was funny.

Because she finally understood.

“This was the plan.””

Everyone turned.

“What plan?”” Ethan asked.

Vanessa stared at Lily.

“Alexander knew.””

“Knew what?””

“That Ethan would need someone he could trust.””

Lily looked confused.

Vanessa continued:

“Someone outside the family. Someone outside the company.””

Ethan looked at the document.

“My brother trusted her.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Nobody answered.

Then Lily remembered.

Another piece.

A conversation.

Alexander’s voice.

“You’re the only person who won’t be bought.””

Her eyes widened.

“He told me.””

Ethan looked at her.

“What?””

“Before the accident.””

She looked at him.

“Alexander told me if anything happened to him, I had to protect you.””

Ethan stood frozen.

“He knew.””

“Yes.””

“He knew someone was coming after me.””

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t I remember?””

Lily looked at Vanessa.

Because now the answer was obvious.

Vanessa looked away.

Ethan’s voice became colder.

“What did you do to me?””

Vanessa shook her head.

“I didn’t erase your memory.””

“But you helped someone who did.””

She said nothing.

That was the answer.

The security officer suddenly moved.

“Mr. Calloway.””

Ethan turned.

“What?””

The officer held up another tablet.

“We found something else.””

“What?””

“The accident report.””

Richard frowned.

“You said it was altered.””

“It was.””

The officer looked at Lily.

“But the original version was hidden.””

“Where?””

The officer hesitated.

“Inside the company archive.””

Ethan walked over.

“Open it.””

The file appeared.

A report.

Photos.

Statements.

And one final recording.

Ethan pressed play.

The audio began.

A man’s voice.

Daniel.

“I know you can hear this.””

Everyone froze.

Daniel continued.

“I don’t know if Ethan remembers.””

A pause.

“But if he does, tell him the truth.””

The recording crackled.

“I didn’t cause the crash.””

Vanessa looked shocked.

Daniel’s voice continued.

“I was there because I was trying to stop it.””

Ethan stared.

“What?””

The recording continued.

“The person who ordered the accident wasn’t Vanessa.””

Everyone froze.

A second voice appeared.

A voice Ethan recognized instantly.

His own.

But older.

Angrier.

The recording was Ethan.

Saying one sentence:

“If anything happens to me, the person responsible is the one person everyone trusts.””

The audio ended.

Nobody moved.

Then the screen displayed the final line from Daniel’s recording:

*The person who betrayed you was never your enemy. They were your closest ally.*

Ethan slowly turned.

Because suddenly every piece connected.

The missing year.

The altered records.

The accident.

The betrayal.

And the person who had been standing beside him all night.

Richard Hale.

The man who knew everything.

The man who had protected the secret.

The man Ethan had trusted for fifteen years.

Richard’s face went pale.

“Ethan…”

Ethan looked at him.

“Tell me I’m wrong.””

May you like

Richard said nothing.

And that silence was the confession.
