Chapter 4: The Woman He Was Never Supposed to Remember
For several seconds, nobody moved.
The name hung in the air like a secret that had finally escaped.
Lily Carter.
Ethan stared at her.
She stared back.
And in that moment, she wished she had never walked across that ballroom.
She wished she had ignored the glass.
She wished she had looked away like everyone else.
But she hadn’t.
Because six months ago, she had learned something important.
Sometimes the truth didn’t need a hero.
It only needed someone willing to notice.
“Why are you looking at me like that?”” Lily whispered.
Ethan didn’t answer.
His expression was impossible to read.
Not anger.
Not suspicion.
Something deeper.
Like he was standing in front of a locked door and somehow knew there was something behind it.
Vanessa recovered first.
She stepped between them.
“This is ridiculous.””
Her voice was sharper now.
Controlled.
Almost desperate.
“Ethan, you cannot seriously believe this woman.””
Ethan looked at her.
“Why?””
Vanessa blinked.
“Because she’s a stranger.””
Lily looked down.
The word hurt more than she expected.
A stranger.
That was what she was supposed to be.
A waitress.
A nobody.
Someone people like Vanessa could dismiss with one sentence.
But then Ethan spoke.
“Is she?””
Vanessa froze.
The entire room watched.
Ethan turned toward Richard.
“You said I was meeting her.””
Richard nodded slowly.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Richard looked uncomfortable.
“I don’t know.””
“That’s a lie.””
Richard’s face tightened.
Ethan had always been known for one thing.
He could read people.
Even when he couldn’t remember himself.
“I know when someone is hiding something,” Ethan said.
Richard looked away.
Lily noticed.
Again.
Everyone was afraid.
But everyone was afraid of different things.
Vanessa was afraid of losing power.
Damian was afraid of being exposed.
Richard was afraid of what Ethan would remember.
And Lily?
Lily was afraid she was about to become part of something she never asked for.
Ethan walked toward her.
Slowly.
“Have we met?””
The question caught her off guard.
She looked at him.
“No.””
A strange silence followed.
Richard frowned.
“But you—”
Lily interrupted.
“No.””
She looked directly at Ethan.
“We haven’t.””
Vanessa immediately smiled.
“There you go.””
But Lily continued.
“At least… not that I remember.””
The smile disappeared from Vanessa’s face.
Ethan noticed.
“Why would you say that?””
Lily took a breath.
“Because I don’t know why your board member thinks I’m connected to your past.””
She looked at the folder.
“I came here tonight because of a drink.””
Her voice became firmer.
“I saw someone trying to hurt you.””
She looked around the room.
“And now I’m standing here being told I was somehow part of your life six months ago.””
Nobody spoke.
Lily shook her head.
“I think someone needs to explain.””
Damian smiled faintly.
“That’s exactly what we’re going to do.””
Ethan turned.
“You seem very interested in explaining my life.””
Damian shrugged.
“Because unlike everyone else here, I’m willing to tell you the truth.””
Vanessa laughed.
“You?””
She stepped toward him.
“You’re the one who lied to him.””
Damian looked at her.
“You lied first.””
The accusation hit.
Vanessa went silent.
Ethan watched both of them.
“You two are finished pretending.””
Neither answered.
“Good.””
Ethan picked up the folder.
“Then we start from the beginning.””
He looked at Damian.
“Why was Lily Carter involved?””
Damian’s smile faded.
“Because before the accident, you trusted her.””
Ethan looked at Lily.
“Trusted her how?””
Damian hesitated.
And for the first time, he looked uncertain.
“She was investigating something for you.””
Lily frowned.
“Investigating what?””
Damian didn’t answer.
Ethan looked at Richard.
“You know.””
Richard closed his eyes.
“Yes.””
“What?””
Richard looked at Vanessa.
Then at Damian.
Then finally at Ethan.
“You suspected someone inside the company was stealing from you.””
The room went quiet.
Ethan’s eyes narrowed.
“Who?””
Richard didn’t answer.
Because he didn’t need to.
Everyone knew.
Vanessa whispered:
“Richard.””
But he continued.
“You hired someone outside the company because you didn’t trust your own security team.””
Ethan looked at Lily.
“You.””
Lily shook her head.
“I don’t understand.””
Richard looked at her.
“You worked as an assistant investigator before you became a waitress.””
Her heart stopped.
“What?””
“You were helping him.””
Lily felt dizzy.
“That’s impossible.””
“Why?””
“Because I’ve never met him.””
Richard’s expression changed.
“After the accident, you disappeared.””
Lily looked at him.
“Why?””
Richard hesitated.
Then Ethan answered.
“Because someone wanted her gone.””
The words came out before he even realized he had said them.
Everyone turned.
Ethan looked confused.
A memory.
A fragment.
Something.
He pressed his hand against his forehead.
The pain came suddenly.
Rain.
A hospital hallway.
A woman sitting beside a bed.
A voice saying:
“Don’t trust anyone.””
Then another voice.
Vanessa.
Crying.
Saying:
“You need to forget her.””
Ethan opened his eyes.
Lily saw it.
He remembered something.
“What did you see?”” she asked quietly.
He looked at her.
“I don’t know.””
But he did.
A little.
Enough.
Vanessa stepped forward.
“Ethan, you’re overwhelmed.””
“No.””
“You need to rest.””
“No.””
His voice stopped her.
“I need answers.””
The confidence that had carried Vanessa through the night was breaking apart.
Ethan looked at her.
“Did you know about Lily?””
Vanessa said nothing.
That was enough.
“Did you?””
Finally, she whispered:
“Yes.””
The room exploded with whispers.
Lily felt like the floor moved beneath her.
“You knew me?””
Vanessa looked at her.
Not with surprise.
With resentment.
“I knew enough.””
“Enough for what?””
Vanessa looked away.
Ethan stepped closer.
“Answer her.””
Vanessa’s eyes returned to Lily.
“You were a problem.””
The honesty shocked everyone.
Lily stared.
“A problem?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Vanessa’s jaw tightened.
“Because Ethan listened to you.””
The words hit harder than any confession.
Lily looked at Ethan.
Ethan looked at Vanessa.
“What does that mean?””
Vanessa realized too late what she had admitted.
She tried to recover.
“It means you respected her opinion.””
“No.””
Ethan shook his head.
“It means more.””
Vanessa said nothing.
Damian suddenly moved.
“You need to stop talking.””
Everyone looked at him.
Vanessa’s eyes narrowed.
“You’re worried now?””
Damian’s expression hardened.
“Yes.””
For the first time, Lily saw them differently.
Not as partners.
As people waiting for one another to fall.
Ethan noticed too.
“Something happened that night.””
Nobody answered.
He looked at Lily.
“Tell me.””
She looked confused.
“Tell you what?””
“Anything you remember.””
“I don’t remember you.””
“Try.””
Lily looked at him.
The room waited.
She hated that everyone was watching her.
But then she saw Ethan’s face.
A man surrounded by people who knew his past better than he did.
A man who had lost pieces of himself.
And somehow, she knew that feeling.
Not because she had forgotten.
Because someone had made her believe she was invisible.
She took a breath.
“I remember a phone call.””
Ethan became still.
“When?””
“Six months ago.””
Vanessa’s face changed.
Lily continued.
“I was working late. I received a call from an unknown number.””
She looked at Ethan.
“The person said your life was in danger.””
Ethan whispered:
“Who called you?””
Lily shook her head.
“I don’t know.””
“What did they say?””
She closed her eyes.
Trying to find the memory.
Then she remembered.
A voice.
A warning.
A sentence she never forgot.
“They said…”
Her voice became quieter.
“‘If Ethan Calloway forgets, it means they succeeded.’”
Nobody breathed.
Ethan stared at her.
Vanessa stepped backward.
Because she knew.
She knew exactly what Lily was about to reveal.
Lily opened her eyes.
“And then the person said one more thing.””
Ethan’s voice was barely audible.
“What?””
Lily looked at him.
“They said…”
She paused.
“‘Don’t let Vanessa find out you still have the evidence.’”
The color drained from Vanessa’s face.
Because there was only one reason Lily could know that.
Only one possibility.
Lily had been there.
She had seen the evidence.

And somewhere, hidden inside Ethan Calloway’s missing memories…
Was the proof that could destroy them all.
