Chapter 6: The File With Her Name On It

The accusation did not come from a person.

It came from a screen.

A cold, glowing rectangle in the hands of a security officer.

And somehow, that made it worse.

Lily stared at the tablet.

Her own name sat at the top of the access record.

LILY CARTER.

Timestamp.

Authorization.

Everything.

Evidence.

She felt like she couldn’t breathe.

“That’s not possible,” she said again.

The officer looked uncomfortable.

“I’m just reporting what the system shows.””

Ethan didn’t take his eyes off her.

Not with anger.

Not yet.

But with questions.

And Lily hated that.

Because she understood.

If she were standing in his place, she would have questions too.

“Mr. Calloway,” the officer continued, “the records were accessed approximately twenty minutes ago.””

“From where?””

The officer checked the tablet.

“Remote access.””

“Meaning?””

“Someone used her credentials from another location.””

Lily looked up immediately.

“My credentials?””

“Yes.””

“I don’t have access to your hospital records.””

The officer hesitated.

“According to the system, you did.””

Vanessa gave a quiet laugh.

Everyone turned toward her.

It wasn’t the same cruel laugh from earlier.

This one was different.

Relief.

Like someone had just handed her a way out.

“I knew it,” Vanessa said.

Ethan looked at her.

“Knew what?””

“That she wasn’t innocent.””

Lily’s eyes moved to Vanessa.

“You’re serious?””

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“You appeared out of nowhere. You knew about the drink. You knew about the evidence. You somehow know things about Ethan’s past that nobody else knows.””

She looked at Ethan.

“And now we discover her name is connected to stolen records.””

Damian watched silently.

Too silently.

Lily noticed.

“You’re enjoying this.””

Damian smiled faintly.

“No.””

“Yes, you are.””

He looked at her.

“Because this is exactly how people like us get destroyed.””

Lily frowned.

“People like us?””

“People who know too much.””

Ethan stepped between them.

“Enough.””

Everyone stopped.

He looked at the security officer.

“Can the access be traced?””

“Yes.””

“How long?””

“A few minutes.””

“Do it.””

The officer nodded and walked away.

Ethan turned back.

No one spoke.

Then Lily quietly said:

“I didn’t do this.””

Ethan looked at her.

“I know.””

The answer surprised everyone.

Especially Lily.

Vanessa stared.

“You believe her?””

Ethan looked at the computer record.

“I believe something doesn’t add up.””

He pointed toward the screen.

“If she wanted to hide something, why would she expose herself in front of fifty witnesses tonight?””

Nobody answered.

Because nobody had a good answer.

Ethan looked at Lily.

“You raised your hand when everyone else stayed quiet.””

His voice lowered.

“You saved my life.””

Lily swallowed.

“I don’t know if I saved your life.””

She looked at the champagne glass.

“But I know I didn’t want anyone hurt.””

For a moment, Ethan said nothing.

Then Richard quietly spoke.

“There’s something else you should know.””

Ethan turned.

“What?””

Richard looked nervous.

“The access wasn’t the first time Lily’s name appeared.””

Lily’s stomach tightened.

“What does that mean?””

Richard walked toward the table.

Before he could continue, Vanessa said:

“Richard.””

The warning in her voice was obvious.

Richard ignored it.

“After Ethan’s accident, there was an internal investigation.””

Ethan frowned.

“Into the crash?””

“Yes.””

“And?””

Richard looked at Lily.

“She was the first suspect.””

The room became silent.

Lily felt like the ground disappeared.

“Why?””

Richard hesitated.

“Because she was the last person known to have spoken to Ethan before the crash.””

Ethan looked at Lily.

“Did you?””

Lily searched her memory.

Nothing.

A blank wall.

“I don’t remember.””

Vanessa smiled sadly.

“That’s convenient.””

Ethan looked at her.

“Don’t.””

The single word stopped her.

Lily closed her eyes.

Trying.

Trying to find anything.

A conversation.

A face.

A sound.

But there was only darkness.

“I really don’t remember.””

Richard studied her.

“That’s what worried everyone.””

“What?””

“That after the accident, you disappeared too.””

Lily looked confused.

“I disappeared?””

“Yes.””

“Why would I disappear?””

Richard didn’t answer.

Ethan looked at him.

“Tell me.””

Richard sighed.

“Because someone threatened her.””

Everyone looked surprised.

Even Vanessa.

Lily stared.

“Who?””

Richard looked toward Damian.

The answer was clear before he spoke.

“His people.””

Damian laughed.

“Of course.””

“You warned her,” Richard said.

“I warned everyone.””

“You threatened her.””

Damian’s smile faded.

“I told her to stay away.””

“Why?””

Damian looked at Ethan.

“Because she was about to ruin everything.””

Ethan stepped closer.

“What was she investigating?””

Damian didn’t answer.

Lily looked at him.

“What did I find?””

For the first time, Damian looked at her differently.

Not like an enemy.

Like a person who had become dangerous.

“You found the transfer.””

“What transfer?””

“The one that proves Vanessa wasn’t just stealing money.””

Ethan looked at Vanessa.

She went pale.

Damian continued.

“She was moving ownership.””

“Ownership of what?”” Ethan asked.

Damian looked directly at him.

“Calloway Holdings.””

The silence that followed was heavier than before.

Ethan stared.

“She was trying to take my company?””

“Yes.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“That’s not true.””

Damian smiled.

“You really want to keep pretending?””

“You’re the one who planned it.””

“Yes.””

“And you’re the one who convinced me.””

“Yes.””

The honesty shocked everyone.

Damian stepped closer to Ethan.

“But she was the one who wanted your life.””

Ethan’s expression darkened.

“What does that mean?””

Vanessa’s eyes widened.

“Don’t.””

Damian looked at her.

“You wanted everything.””

“Stop.””

“You wanted the company. The money. The name.””

Vanessa’s voice became desperate.

“Stop talking.””

“And when Ethan refused to sign the final documents…”

He paused.

The room froze.

“What documents?”” Ethan asked.

Damian smiled.

“The ones he forgot.””

Ethan’s breathing slowed.

“What happened that night?””

Nobody answered.

Then Lily suddenly grabbed the edge of the table.

A memory hit her.

Not Ethan’s.

Hers.

A dark parking garage.

Rainwater on the concrete.

A folder in her hand.

A man shouting.

A woman’s voice.

Vanessa.

“Give me the file.””

Lily gasped.

Ethan noticed immediately.

“What is it?””

She looked at him.

“I remember something.””

Everyone turned.

Lily pressed a hand to her forehead.

“The night before your accident…”

She looked at Vanessa.

“You came to find me.””

Vanessa went completely still.

“No.””

“Yes.””

Lily’s voice shook.

“You asked me where the evidence was.””

Ethan stared.

“What evidence?””

Lily looked at him.

“The evidence I found.””

Vanessa took a step back.

“Lily, think carefully.””

“I am.””

“You’re confused.””

The same word.

Again.

Lily looked at her.

“No.””

Her voice became stronger.

“I’m remembering.””

The room went silent.

Lily looked at Ethan.

“You didn’t forget me.””

A chill moved through everyone.

“What are you saying?”” Ethan asked.

She swallowed.

“I think…”

She looked at Vanessa.

“I think someone made both of us forget.””

Nobody spoke.

Then the security officer returned.

His face was pale.

“Mr. Calloway.””

Ethan turned.

“What did you find?””

The officer looked at Lily.

Then answered:

“The hospital record access was traced.””

A pause.

“It came from inside this building.””

Ethan’s eyes narrowed.

“Who?””

The officer slowly turned the tablet around.

On the screen was the security footage.

A person entering the private records system.

A person everyone in the room recognized.

Vanessa whispered:

“No…”

Because the person on the screen wasn’t Lily.

It wasn’t Damian.

It wasn’t Richard.

May you like

It was Ethan Calloway.

And the timestamp showed it happened while he was standing in the ballroom, holding his untouched champagne glass.
