Chapter 5: The Evidence Hidden in His Lost Memory
The room stayed silent after Lily finished speaking.
Not the comfortable silence of people listening.
The uncomfortable silence of people realizing they had heard something they were never supposed to hear.
Vanessa’s face had gone completely still.
That frightened Lily more than anger would have.
Anger was easy to understand.
Fear was not.
Ethan looked at Vanessa.
“You knew about the evidence.””
It wasn’t a question.
Vanessa forced herself to smile.
“No.””
“Then why did you react like that?””
“I didn’t.””
“You did.””
She shook her head.
“You’re confused.””
The words landed differently this time.
Everyone noticed.
Because Vanessa wasn’t comforting him anymore.
She was using the same phrase she had used for months.
Confused.
Unstable.
Not yourself.
Ethan’s expression hardened.
“Stop telling me what I am.””
Vanessa’s lips parted.
“I’m trying to help you.””
“No.””
He looked around the ballroom.
“You’re trying to control what I know.””
Nobody spoke.
Because nobody could deny it anymore.
Lily watched Ethan carefully.
The man standing in front of her was still the same billionaire everyone feared.
But something had changed.
The accident had taken away pieces of his memory.
It had not taken away his ability to see.
“Where is the evidence?”” Ethan asked.
Vanessa looked away.
Damian answered.
“We don’t know.””
Ethan turned toward him.
“You expect me to believe that?””
Damian shrugged.
“It disappeared.””
“When?””
“The night of your accident.””
Ethan’s eyes narrowed.
“What was it?””
Damian didn’t answer.
Ethan stepped closer.
“I’m done asking politely.””
For the first time, Damian looked uncomfortable.
“It was financial records.””
“Of what?””
Damian looked at Vanessa.
Then said:
“Payments.””
“To who?””
Damian stayed quiet.
Ethan’s voice became colder.
“To who?””
Richard finally spoke.
“Damian.””
The older man’s voice was full of warning.
But Damian ignored him.
“The payments were connected to several shell companies.””
Ethan stared.
“And?””
Damian looked directly at Vanessa.
“They all led back to her.””
Vanessa’s face changed.
“You’re lying.””
Damian laughed.
“You really think I’m going to protect you now?””
“You were part of it.””
“Yes.””
The answer shocked everyone.
Even Vanessa.
Damian didn’t look ashamed.
“I was.””
Ethan stared at him.
“Why admit that?””
“Because unlike her, I understand when a deal is finished.””
Vanessa stepped forward.
“You think you can walk away?””
Damian smiled.
“No.””
The smile disappeared.
“But I can make sure I’m not the only one who falls.””
Lily watched the two of them.
They were no longer pretending.
The alliance was broken.
Ethan turned to Richard.
“Get everyone out.””
Richard looked surprised.
“What?””
“This is no longer a charity event.””
Ethan looked at the guests.
“Everyone leaves.””
No one argued.
Within minutes, the ballroom began emptying.
The wealthy guests who had arrived expecting champagne and speeches left carrying a completely different story.
By the time security closed the doors, only a few people remained.
Ethan.
Lily.
Vanessa.
Damian.
Richard.
And two security officers standing near the entrance.
Ethan sat down.
For the first time all night, he looked exhausted.
Not weak.
Just exhausted.
He looked at Lily.
“Tell me everything you remember.””
Lily hesitated.
“I don’t remember working for you.””
“I know.””
“I don’t remember meeting you.””
“I know.””
“Then why do you believe me?””
Ethan looked at the untouched champagne glass.
“Because you had no reason to lie.””
Vanessa immediately reacted.
“That’s not true.””
Everyone looked at her.
She realized her mistake.
Ethan raised an eyebrow.
“Why would she lie?””
Vanessa opened her mouth.
Then closed it.
Exactly.
She had no answer.
Lily sat across from Ethan.
“I wasn’t always a waitress.””
Richard nodded.
“No.””
Ethan looked at him.
“Explain.””
Richard sighed.
“Before all this, Lily worked in corporate investigations.””
Lily looked at him.
“I did?””
“Yes.””
“For your company?””
Richard nodded.
“You hired her privately.””
Ethan looked surprised.
“Why privately?””
Richard looked uncomfortable.
“Because you believed someone inside the company was leaking information.””
“Who?””
Richard didn’t answer.
Ethan leaned forward.
“Everyone keeps avoiding that question.””
Finally, Richard said:
“Damian.””
Damian smiled.
“Convenient.””
Richard ignored him.
“You were preparing to remove him from the company.””
Ethan looked at Damian.
“You.””
Damian remained silent.
“You were my business partner.””
“Yes.””
“And you betrayed me?””
Damian laughed softly.
“Depends who you ask.””
Ethan’s face hardened.
“I’m asking.””
Damian leaned back.
“Then yes.””
The honesty was almost worse than a lie.
“You built this company with me,” Damian continued.
“You were brilliant. You were careful. You were impossible to manipulate.””
He glanced at Vanessa.
“Until she came along.””
Vanessa’s eyes narrowed.
“Don’t blame me for your failures.””
Damian ignored her.
“You changed after you met Vanessa.””
Ethan looked at her.
“Changed how?””
“You became emotional.””
Vanessa scoffed.
“That’s ridiculous.””
Damian continued.
“You trusted people you shouldn’t have trusted.””
Ethan looked down.
A memory flashed.
Vanessa holding his hand.
Vanessa crying.
Vanessa saying:
“You don’t need anyone else.””
Then another image.
Lily standing in an office.
A stack of documents.
Her voice:
“Ethan, you need to see this.””
He grabbed his head.
The pain returned.
Lily stood.
“Ethan?””
He closed his eyes.
“I saw you.””
Everyone froze.
Lily stopped.
“What?””
“I saw you.””
He opened his eyes.
“You were in my office.””
Lily’s breath caught.
“What happened?””
Ethan looked at her.
“You gave me something.””
“What?””
“I don’t know.””
He looked frustrated.
“It’s right there.””
He tapped his temple.
“But I can’t reach it.””
Vanessa suddenly spoke.
“You need to stop.””
Ethan turned.
“Why?””
“Because you’re hurting yourself.””
“No.””
His voice was firm.
“You’re scared of what I’ll remember.””
Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.
“You think I wanted this?””
Nobody answered.
She stepped closer.
“I stayed with you when you were injured.””
Ethan watched her.
“I sat beside your hospital bed.””
Her voice shook.
“I held your hand.””
She looked at him.
“I watched you wake up and not remember the woman you loved.””
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Even Lily felt something.
Because maybe Vanessa had suffered.
Maybe there was truth buried under the lies.
But then Ethan asked:
“If you loved me…”
He paused.
“Why did you let me forget?””
Vanessa went silent.
That was the question.
The one she couldn’t answer.
Richard looked away.
Damian smiled slightly.
Because he knew.
The truth was finally getting closer.
Ethan stood.
“I want my medical records.””
Richard nodded.
“I’ll get them.””
“No.””
Ethan looked at him.
“You’ll get everything.””
He pointed at the folder.
“Every document. Every transaction. Every communication connected to the accident.””
Richard nodded.
“Yes.””
Ethan turned to Lily.
“And you.””
She looked surprised.
“Me?””
“You’re going to help me.””
Lily shook her head.
“I don’t even know what happened.””
“Neither do I.””
He looked at her.
“That’s why I need the person who was there before I forgot.””
For the first time that night, Lily saw something different in his eyes.
Not suspicion.
Not confusion.
Trust.
A small amount.
But real.
Then one of the security officers near the door suddenly touched his earpiece.
His face changed.
“Mr. Calloway.””
Ethan turned.
“What?””
The officer hesitated.
“There’s a problem.””
“What problem?””
The officer looked at Lily.
Then at Ethan.
“The hospital records were accessed tonight.””
Ethan went still.
“By who?””
The officer swallowed.
“The account used to access them…”
He looked down at the tablet in his hand.
“Belonged to Lily Carter.””
Lily’s face went pale.
“That’s impossible.””
Ethan stared at her.
And the room fell silent again.
Because now there was only one question left.
May you like
If Lily was telling the truth…
Why did the evidence say she was the one hiding it?
