The Bowl That Exposed Her / Chapter 11 / 15

Chapter 11: The Man Behind the Messages

Bianca didn’t deny it.

That was the worst part.

She just stood there.

Silent.

Like silence could protect her.

“How much?””

She looked at me.

“Marcus…”

“How much did you pay him yesterday?””

Her lips trembled.

“I didn’t want him coming back.””

“So you paid him?””

“Yes.””

Maya looked horrified.

“Why yesterday?””

Nobody answered.

Then Lily spoke.

“Because Mommy was packing.””

Everyone turned.

My daughter looked down.

“I heard her talking.””

My heart broke again.

“Baby, what did you hear?””

She squeezed Maya’s hand.

“Mommy said we had to go.””

I looked at Bianca.

“You were taking my children.””

“No.””

“You were leaving.””

“I was trying to protect them.””

I shook my head.

“You don’t get to use that word anymore.””

Bianca looked hurt.

But I didn’t care.

Because protection didn’t look like fear.

It didn’t look like secrets.

It didn’t look like a child begging to be believed.

Maya picked up the phone.

“There’s a location in the message.””

I looked.

“What location?””

She turned the screen.

An address.

“Who sent it?””

“Adrian.””

My jaw tightened.

“Why would he send us that?””

Maya read the message.

“He said…”

She stopped.

“What?””

She looked nervous.

“He said Bianca lied about why she paid him.””

I looked at Bianca.

She immediately shook her head.

“Don’t listen to him.””

“Why?””

“Because he wants revenge.””

“Maybe.””

I looked at the address.

“But that doesn’t mean he’s wrong.””

The words hurt her.

I could see it.

But trust wasn’t something she could demand anymore.

I grabbed my coat.

Maya stood.

“Where are you going?””

“To get answers.””

Bianca moved in front of me.

“No.””

I stopped.

“You don’t get to stop me.””

“Marcus, please.””

“Please?””

She looked desperate.

“If you go there, everything changes.””

I stared at her.

“Everything already changed.””

The drive was silent.

Maya sat beside Lily in the back seat.

I kept checking the rearview mirror.

My daughters.

The two people I would do anything to protect.

And the person I thought I was protecting them from.

When we arrived, the place was an old office building.

Nothing dramatic.

Nothing suspicious.

Just a normal building.

That somehow made it worse.

A man was waiting outside.

Adrian.

I knew immediately.

Not because I had seen him before.

Because Bianca’s reaction told me.

She stopped walking.

Her entire body froze.

Adrian looked at her.

Then at me.

“So.””

His voice was calm.

“He finally knows.””

I stepped forward.

“Who are you?””

He looked at Lily.

Then back at me.

“I’m the person Bianca spent years trying to erase.””

My fists tightened.

“You need to explain.””

He nodded.

“I do.””

He looked at Bianca.

“You should have told him.””

She looked away.

Adrian pulled out a folder.

“Everything is in here.””

I took it.

The first page was a legal document.

The second was a letter.

The third made my hands go cold.

A photo.

A picture of Bianca.

Adrian.

And Lily.

But the date was impossible.

It was taken after Bianca told me Adrian was gone.

I looked at her.

“You said you cut contact.””

“I did.””

Adrian shook his head.

“No.””

Bianca looked at him.

“Stop.””

He ignored her.

“She contacted me six months ago.””

My heart sank.

“Why?””

Adrian looked at Bianca.

“Tell him.””

She said nothing.

“Tell him why you needed me.””

The silence stretched.

Then Bianca whispered:

“Because I needed someone to help me take Lily.””

Everything stopped.

Maya gasped.

Lily grabbed my hand.

I looked at Bianca.

May you like

And for the first time…

I didn’t recognize my own wife.
