Chapter 8: The Truth Hidden in the Cloud
I didn’t sleep.
Nobody slept.
The dining room became a courtroom.
A place where every word mattered.
Where every silence meant something.
Maya sat on the couch with Lily beside her.
I sat across from Bianca.
Between us was the phone.
The evidence.
The truth.
“You said there’s more.””
Bianca stared at the floor.
“I said you wouldn’t like what you found.””
“That’s not an answer.””
She rubbed her forehead.
“You want the truth?””
“Yes.””
She looked up.
“Then prepare yourself.””
I almost smiled.
“After tonight, I don’t think anything surprises me anymore.””
She looked at me.
“You still don’t understand.””
“Then explain.””
For several seconds, she said nothing.
Then:
“Daniel wasn’t the beginning.””
The words made my stomach tighten.
“What?””
“He wasn’t the reason things changed.””
I stared at her.
“Then what was?””
Her eyes moved toward Maya and Lily.
“The family.””
I felt anger rise.
But I forced myself to stay quiet.
“What about the family?””
She looked bitter.
“I felt trapped.””
Maya immediately stood.
“Stop.””
Bianca looked at her.
“What?””
“Stop pretending you were the victim.””
Bianca’s eyes hardened.
“You’re a child.””
“And you hurt another child.””
The words landed.
Hard.
Bianca looked away.
I unlocked the old phone again.
The cloud storage was still connected.
There were hundreds of files.
Photos.
Videos.
Documents.
I clicked the newest folder.
A title appeared.
*Plans.*
My heart sank.
Plans.
I opened it.
Inside were screenshots of apartment listings.
Travel information.
Bank transfers.
And a document.
Bianca’s name was on it.
Maya saw my face.
“What?””
I didn’t answer.
I opened the document.
It was a draft.
A separation agreement.
Not divorce papers.
Something else.
A plan.
Bianca had been preparing to leave.
And she had written details about all of us.
Marcus’s work schedule.
Maya’s school.
Lily’s routine.
I looked at her.
“You were tracking us.””
“No.””
“You wrote everything down.””
“Because I needed organization.””
“For what?””
She didn’t answer.
I turned the screen toward her.
“For leaving?””
Her eyes narrowed.
“I was trying to make a plan.””
“A plan that didn’t include telling me.””
Silence.
Maya walked closer.
“Dad.””
I looked at her.
“There’s something else.””
She pointed at the screen.
A file near the bottom.
The title was:
*DNA.*
Everything inside me stopped.
I looked at Bianca.
“What is that?””
Her face changed.
Immediately.
“No.””
I felt my heartbeat in my ears.
“What is that?””
She stood.
“Don’t open it.””
That was the answer.
The one I never wanted.
The one I feared.
I clicked.
A report appeared.
My eyes moved across the page.
Then stopped.
I read it again.
Because maybe I had misunderstood.
Maybe the words were different.
Maybe my brain was refusing to process them.
“Marcus?””
Maya’s voice sounded far away.
I looked at Bianca.
“Why?””
She started crying.
The first real tears I had seen from her all night.
“I was scared.””
“Scared of what?””
She didn’t answer.
I held up the report.
“Why would you test Lily’s DNA?””
Silence.
Lily looked confused.
“Daddy?””
I immediately closed the screen.
I walked toward her.
“No.””
I knelt down.
“Don’t worry.””
But I couldn’t make my own voice steady.
Because the truth was now sitting in front of me.
And it was bigger than dog food.
Bigger than recordings.
Bigger than Daniel.
Bianca had been questioning something about my daughter.
About Lily.
About me.
Maya looked at the report.
Then at Bianca.
“Did you think she wasn’t his?””
Bianca didn’t answer.
That was enough.
I stood slowly.
“You thought I wasn’t her father.””
Her tears continued.
“I didn’t know.””
The words cut deeper than I expected.
“You didn’t know?””
“I found something.””
“What?””
She looked terrified.
“I found messages.””
“From who?””
She swallowed.
“From before we met.””
My mind raced.
“What messages?””
She looked at the phone.
“At first, I thought someone was trying to destroy us.””
“And then?””
Her voice became quiet.
“Then I started believing them.””
I stared at her.
“Believing what?””
Bianca looked toward Lily.
May you like
Then whispered:
“That Lily’s father might still be alive.””
