Chapter 4: The Folder Named After My Daughter

Maya’s finger stayed frozen above the screen.

For a moment, nobody breathed.

The folder name sat there like a warning.

*Lily.*

Not “family.””

Not “photos.””

Not anything innocent.

Just my daughter’s name.

Bianca’s face had lost all its color.

“Give me the phone.””

Her voice was barely above a whisper.

That scared me more than when she had screamed.

Because Bianca never whispered.

Bianca commanded.

She controlled rooms. She controlled conversations. She controlled the way people saw her.

But now she sounded afraid.

Maya stepped backward.

“No.””

Bianca’s eyes narrowed.

“Maya, you don’t understand what you’re doing.””

“No,” Maya said.

“I understand exactly what I’m doing.””

I looked between them.

“Open it.””

Maya looked at me.

“Dad…”

“Open it.””

She nodded slowly.

Her thumb touched the screen.

The folder opened.

Inside were dozens of videos.

Dates.

Times.

Months of recordings.

My stomach twisted.

I grabbed the edge of the dining table to steady myself.

“How long has this been going on?””

Nobody answered.

I looked at Bianca.

“How long?””

She crossed her arms.

“You’re acting like I’m some monster.””

I stared at her.

“You have a folder full of videos of my daughter.””

“She was acting out.””

“That’s not an answer.””

Her lips pressed together.

“She needed correction.””

Maya let out a small, angry laugh.

“Correction?””

Bianca turned toward her.

“You have no idea what discipline is.””

Maya’s eyes filled with tears.

“No. I know exactly what discipline is. This wasn’t discipline.””

She pointed at the phone.

“This was you making her scared.””

Lily grabbed my hand.

Her fingers were tiny.

But they were shaking.

I knelt beside her.

“Baby, look at me.””

She slowly looked up.

“Did Bianca tell you not to tell me?””

Lily’s eyes moved toward Bianca.

That was enough.

I already knew.

“Lily.””

She swallowed.

“She said…”

Her voice cracked.

“She said you would think I was bad.””

My chest tightened.

“Why would you ever think that?””

“Because she said you’d be disappointed.””

The words hit harder than any accusation.

Because I knew exactly what that meant.

My daughter had been carrying fear that belonged to an adult.

I stood.

“Bianca.””

She looked away.

“You’re overreacting.””

“No.””

My voice was calm.

And that seemed to scare her.

“I’m finally reacting.””

She walked closer.

“Marcus, you’re letting your emotions control you.””

I almost laughed.

“My emotions?””

“Yes.””

She pointed toward Lily.

“You always protect her. You never see what she does.””

I looked at my five-year-old daughter.

The child who still asked me to check under her bed for monsters.

The child who cried when she accidentally stepped on an ant.

“What exactly did she do?””

Bianca hesitated.

That hesitation told me everything.

“Tell me.””

“She…”

Bianca looked frustrated.

“She spilled something.””

Maya stared at her.

“You recorded her over spilled juice?””

Bianca ignored her.

“She needs consequences.””

I looked at the phone.

Then at the folder.

Then back at Bianca.

“How many times?””

She didn’t answer.

“How many times did you record my daughter crying?””

Silence.

Maya opened another video.

“Dad.””

I turned.

“What?””

She looked at the screen.

“This one is from two months ago.””

Bianca moved instantly.

“No.””

Maya froze.

Bianca realized her mistake.

Because that reaction wasn’t normal.

People don’t panic when an innocent video is about to play.

They panic when they know exactly what’s inside.

I walked toward Maya.

“Play it.””

The video started.

The camera angle showed the hallway outside Lily’s bedroom.

The recording shook slightly.

Maya’s voice could be heard whispering.

“I’m sorry, Lily. I just need proof.””

My heart dropped.

Maya had been protecting her sister.

The video continued.

Bianca’s voice came from inside the room.

“Stop crying.””

Lily’s small voice answered.

“I want Daddy.””

Bianca replied immediately.

“Your father is tired of hearing about your problems.””

I closed my eyes.

A painful silence filled the room.

Lily looked at me.

“Daddy…”

I turned the video off.

“No.””

I couldn’t listen anymore.

Not because I didn’t believe it.

Because I did.

And that hurt.

Maya lowered the phone.

“I tried telling you.””

I looked at her.

“I know.””

“No, Dad.””

Her voice broke.

“You don’t know.””

She wiped her cheek.

“I told you three times.””

My heart sank.

Three times.

“When?””

She looked down.

“The first time was when you took us to dinner.””

I remembered.

She had been quiet.

I thought she was tired.

“The second time was when Lily stopped sleeping.””

I remembered that too.

I thought she was going through a phase.

“The third time…”

Maya looked at Bianca.

“Was the night she locked Lily outside.””

The room went completely silent.

I turned toward Bianca.

“You did what?””

Bianca immediately shook her head.

“That’s not what happened.””

Maya’s voice trembled.

“She left her outside because Lily wouldn’t apologize.””

“How long?””

Maya looked down.

“Twenty minutes.””

My hands curled into fists.

Not because I wanted to hurt anyone.

Because I was trying not to break.

Bianca stepped closer.

“Marcus, listen to me.””

I looked at her.

“No.””

“Please.””

The word sounded foreign coming from her.

“You don’t understand.””

I stared at the woman I married.

The woman I trusted.

The woman who had been alone with my children.

And then my phone rang.

Everyone looked at it.

The screen showed an unknown number.

I almost ignored it.

Then I saw the message underneath.

*Answer this. It’s about Bianca.*

My eyes moved back to my wife.

Her expression changed.

May you like

Because she knew who it was.

And she knew exactly what they were about to tell me.
