Chapter 14: The Choice That Changed Everything
The message from Adrian stayed on the screen.
One more thing.
Those four words felt impossible.
How could there be anything left?
We had uncovered everything.
The recordings.
The lies.
The payments.
The plan to leave.
The truth about Lily.
What else could exist?
I looked at Bianca.
“Tell me.””
She didn’t move.
Her face went pale.
“Marcus…”
“No.””
I shook my head.
“I’m done discovering things from other people.””
She sat quietly.
Then whispered:
“I was going to take the girls.””
Maya stiffened.
“I know.””
“No.””
Bianca looked at her.
“You don’t know everything.””
That sentence made my stomach drop.
“What does that mean?””
She looked down.
“I wasn’t only leaving.””
The room became silent.
“What were you doing?””
“I was going to disappear.””
“With them?””
She nodded.
Maya stepped back.
“Mom…”
Bianca started crying.
“I thought I was protecting you.””
Maya’s voice broke.
“You were taking us away.””
“I thought I had to.””
“From what?””
Bianca looked at me.
“From losing everything.””
I stared.
“You mean losing control.””
She didn’t answer.
Because she knew.
Maya held Lily’s hand.
“You didn’t even ask us.””
Bianca looked devastated.
“I thought you were too young.””
Maya shook her head.
“No.””
Her voice was stronger now.
“You thought we would say no.””
That was the truth.
Bianca looked away.
I sat down.
Because suddenly I wasn’t angry anymore.
I was exhausted.
There was a difference.
Anger wanted revenge.
Exhaustion just wanted peace.
“What happens now?””
Bianca looked at me.
“I don’t know.””
For the first time, neither of us had an answer.
The next morning was quiet.
No screaming.
No accusations.
Just silence.
The kind that comes after a storm.
Maya made breakfast.
Lily sat at the table drawing.
A normal moment.
A beautiful moment.
A moment that made everything hurt more.
Because this was what we should have always been.
A family.
Not perfect.
But honest.
I watched Lily color.
She looked up.
“Daddy?””
“Yes?””
“Are we staying here?””
I looked at her.
“Yes.””
She smiled.
A small smile.
But real.
Later that day, I met with a lawyer.
Not to destroy Bianca.
Not to punish her.
To protect my daughters.
That was my priority.
The lawyer looked through the evidence.
Then looked at me.
“Marcus, I need to ask something.””
“What?””
“Do you want full custody?””
I thought about it.
About Lily crying.
About Maya holding a phone because she felt nobody would believe her.
About Bianca standing in front of them with excuses instead of apologies.
“Yes.””
The word was difficult.
But necessary.
When I returned home, Bianca was waiting.
“I know.””
I stopped.
“You know what?””
“About the lawyer.””
I nodded.
She looked down.
“I understand.””
That surprised me.
“You do?””
“Yes.””
For a moment, I saw the woman I married.
Not the person behind the lies.
The person underneath.
“I hurt them.””
I didn’t respond.
“I hurt you.””
Still, I said nothing.
“I don’t expect you to forgive me.””
That was the first thing she had said that sounded like accountability.
“I hope one day they forgive me.””
I looked upstairs.
“At some point, that has to be their choice.””
She nodded.
“I know.””
My phone buzzed.
A message.
From Adrian.
I opened it.
No words.
Just a photo.
A photograph of Bianca and me from years ago.
Before marriage.
Before Lily.
On the back was a handwritten note.
I turned it over.
Five words.
*She told me the truth.*
I looked at Bianca.
“What is this?””
Her face changed.
“What?””
I showed her.
She froze.
Because she knew.
“This isn’t from Adrian.””
My eyes narrowed.
“Then who?””
She stepped closer.
Her voice became a whisper.
“Someone else.””
“Who?””
She stared at the photo.
Then said a name.
A name I had never heard before.
A name that explained everything.
“Marcus…”
May you like
She swallowed.
“Your mother.””
