Chapter 9: The Name From Before My Life

Nobody spoke.

Not for a long time.

The sentence stayed in the air.

Like a storm cloud.

Lily’s father might still be alive.

I looked at my daughter.

Then at Bianca.

Then back at Lily.

“No.””

The word came out before I could stop it.

Bianca wiped her tears.

“Marcus—”

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You don’t get to drop something like that and act like it explains anything.””

“I was trying to find answers.””

“You were hurting her.””

“I was scared.””

“You made her scared too.””

She looked down.

And for once, she had no defense.

Maya stepped closer.

“Who is he?””

Bianca looked at her.

“Maya…”

“No.””

Maya’s voice shook.

“I deserve to know.””

I looked at Bianca.

“She’s right.””

Bianca sat down.

She looked exhausted.

Like she had been carrying something heavy for years.

“His name is Adrian.””

The name meant nothing.

But Bianca’s reaction told me everything.

“Who is Adrian?””

She looked at me.

“Someone from before you.””

“Before me?””

“Yes.””

“Someone you were with?””

She nodded slowly.

The room became silent again.

“How long?””

“Before I met you.””

I looked at Lily.

“Then why did you think—”

“Because of the messages.””

“What messages?””

Bianca took the old phone.

Her hands shook as she opened a folder.

“I found these last year.””

She showed me.

Emails.

Old conversations.

The first one was from Adrian.

*I know Lily is my daughter.*

My chest tightened.

I looked away.

Not because I believed it.

Because seeing those words connected to my daughter felt like an attack.

Maya looked over my shoulder.

“Dad…”

I closed the phone.

“No.””

Bianca stared.

“You need to know.””

“I know enough.””

“No, you don’t.””

Her voice became desperate.

“You don’t understand why I changed.””

I laughed quietly.

“Because you thought you found a secret?””

“Yes.””

“And instead of talking to me, you punished my daughter?””

“I didn’t know what to do.””

“You knew exactly what to do.””

She looked at me.

“What?””

“You chose fear.””

The words hurt.

I could see that.

But they were true.

Maya sat beside Lily.

“Did Adrian contact you?””

Bianca nodded.

“When?””

“Months ago.””

I looked at her.

“Months?””

“Yes.””

“And Daniel?””

Her silence answered.

I shook my head.

“So while you were secretly talking to another man, you were also trying to find out if Lily belonged to someone else?””

She looked ashamed.

“I was confused.””

“No.””

I pointed toward the phone.

“You were making choices.””

A tear rolled down her cheek.

“I never stopped loving Lily.””

Lily looked at her.

And for a moment, I saw the little girl who still wanted her mother.

That was the hardest part.

Because children don’t stop loving people just because those people hurt them.

I crouched beside Lily.

“Do you want to say anything?””

She looked at Bianca.

Then at me.

“I want Mommy to stop being angry.””

My heart broke.

Not “I hate her.””

Not “I don’t love her.””

Just:

Stop being angry.

Bianca covered her mouth.

For a second, she looked devastated.

Then her phone rang.

Everyone looked.

The screen showed a name.

Adrian.

Bianca froze.

I saw it.

The hesitation.

The fear.

The guilt.

“Answer it.””

She looked at me.

“Marcus.””

“Answer it.””

Slowly, she picked up.

“Hello?””

The voice on the other end was loud enough that I could hear only fragments.

“Did he find out?””

Bianca looked at me.

Nobody moved.

Then the man continued.

“You need to leave now.””

My blood ran cold.

Bianca whispered:

“I can’t.””

A pause.

Then:

“Why?””

She looked at Lily.

Then at me.

“Because he knows everything.””

The voice on the phone became sharper.

“Bianca, listen to me. If Marcus sees the rest of the records, he’ll know what really happened the night Lily was born.””

My entire body went still.

The night Lily was born.

I looked at Bianca.

“What records?””

She slowly lowered the phone.

And the fear on her face told me one thing.

The biggest secret wasn’t about what happened today.

May you like

It was about the day I became a father.

And I had never known the full story.
