Chapter 3: The Evidence Nobody Was Supposed to See
I didn’t press play.
Not immediately.
Because some part of me was still hoping there was an explanation.
A misunderstanding.
A missing piece.
Anything that would allow me to wake up from the nightmare happening in my own house.
But then I looked at Lily.
She was five years old.
And she was standing behind her sister like Maya was the only shield she trusted.
That was when I knew.
Whatever was on that phone, I needed to see it.
“Play it.””
Maya nodded.
The video started.
The angle was shaky.
The camera pointed toward the dining room.
The same dining room.
The same table.
The same place where my daughter had just been standing.
My heart sank.
I watched Bianca enter the room.
I watched Lily sitting quietly.
I watched Bianca place the metal bowl on the table.
And I watched my daughter’s face change.
She wasn’t surprised.
She wasn’t confused.
She was afraid because she already knew what was coming.
I stopped the video.
I couldn’t watch another second.
Nobody spoke.
Bianca looked at me.
“See?””
Her voice was softer.
“You don’t even know the context.””
I stared at her.
“Then explain.””
She opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
“Explain why my daughter looks terrified before anything even happens.””
Her eyes moved away.
I felt something break inside me.
Not anger.
Something worse.
Disappointment.
Maya took the phone back.
“There are more.””
I looked at her.
“How many?””
She shook her head.
“I don’t know.””
Bianca walked toward the kitchen.
I immediately followed with my eyes.
“Where are you going?””
She stopped.
“To get water.””
“No.””
She turned.
“What?””
“You don’t walk away.””
Her expression changed.
“You’re treating me like a criminal.””
I answered quietly.
“I’m treating you like someone who hurt my child.””
The silence afterward was unbearable.
Then Bianca said the one thing I never expected.
“She’s not even your real daughter.””
The words hit the room like a gunshot.
Lily looked up.
Maya froze.
I stared at Bianca.
“What did you say?””
She immediately looked nervous.
Like she had revealed something she didn’t mean to.
“I didn’t mean—”
“No.””
I stepped closer.
“Say it again.””
Bianca’s face tightened.
“You heard me.””
Maya looked at me.
“Dad?””
I ignored everything except Bianca.
“What are you talking about?””
For years, Lily had been my daughter.
Her first steps.
Her first words.
The night she had a fever and slept on my chest because she wouldn’t let anyone else hold her.
The idea that Bianca could stand there and question that bond made something inside me turn cold.
Bianca realized she had gone too far.
“I was angry.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“That wasn’t anger.””
She looked away.
“That was cruelty.””
Maya stepped closer to Lily.
“Dad…”
I put my hand on Lily’s shoulder.
“I’m here.””
But my mind was racing.
Because now there was another secret.
Another thing Bianca had hidden.
The phone in Maya’s hand suddenly buzzed.
All of us looked down.
A new notification appeared.
Not from a person.
From a file.
Maya frowned.
“What is this?””
She tapped the screen.
Her face changed.
“What?””
I moved closer.
“What did you find?””
She looked at me slowly.
“Dad…”
“What?””
Her hands started shaking.
“There’s a folder.””
“Called what?””
Maya looked at Bianca.
Then back at me.
“The folder is named…”
She stopped.
Bianca’s face went completely white.
“Maya,” she whispered.
“Don’t open that.””
Nobody moved.
Because everyone in that room understood one thing.
Whatever was inside that folder was something Bianca had spent a long time hiding.
Maya’s finger hovered over the screen.
May you like
And then she said the name of the folder out loud.
“Lily.””
