Chapter 2: The Mansion That Buried Secrets

Alexander Bennett had spent seven years believing his home was the safest place in the world.

That night, as he drove through the iron gates of the Bennett Estate, he realized he had been wrong.

The mansion stood beneath the storm clouds like a monument to everything he had lost.

The same stone walls.

The same endless windows.

The same place where he had waited for Eliana to come home.

But now every hallway looked different.

Every shadow looked suspicious.

Malik sat quietly in the back seat, holding his backpack against his chest.

Alexander glanced at him through the rearview mirror.

The boy looked exhausted.

Too small for the weight he carried.

Too young to understand that the truth he had brought back could destroy an entire family.

“Are you hungry?”” Alexander asked.

Malik looked surprised.

“A little.””

Alexander pressed a button near the dashboard.

A moment later, his driver answered.

“Yes, Mr. Bennett?””

“Have someone prepare food.””

There was a pause.

“Right away, sir.””

Malik looked out the window.

“You talk to people like they’re afraid of you.””

Alexander looked at him.

“Are they?””

The boy thought about it.

“Yes.””

A faint, painful smile appeared on Alexander’s face.

“You’re not.””

Malik shrugged.

“My mom said being rich doesn’t make someone important.””

Alexander looked away.

“What else did your mother say?””

“That people show who they are when nobody is watching.””

The words hit harder than Malik realized.

Because Eliana had said the same thing.

Seven years ago.

Before she disappeared.

Before everything changed.

The car stopped in front of the mansion.

The front doors opened immediately.

Standing there was the woman Alexander had spent years trusting.

Victoria Bennett.

His mother.

She was elegant as always, wearing a silk robe and a diamond necklace.

But when she saw Malik step out of the car, her expression changed.

Only for a second.

But Alexander noticed.

Fear.

Real fear.

“Alexander,” she said carefully.

“Who is this child?””

Alexander stepped beside Malik.

“This is Malik.””

Victoria looked at him.

Then at the backpack.

Then at Alexander’s hand.

The key.

Her face became pale.

“Where did you get that?””

Alexander’s eyes narrowed.

“You know what this is?””

Victoria recovered quickly.

“I’ve seen many keys in this house.””

“No.””

His voice became colder.

“You recognized it.””

The silence between them stretched.

Malik looked from one person to another.

He could feel something was wrong.

Victoria forced a smile.

“Alexander, you’ve had a difficult night. We should discuss this privately.””

“No.””

He held the key tighter.

“We discuss it here.””

A servant standing nearby quickly looked down.

Victoria’s jaw tightened.

“You don’t know what you’re doing.””

Alexander stepped closer.

“For seven years, everyone told me my wife was dead.””

His voice shook slightly.

“Tonight, a nine-year-old boy walked into my life carrying her photograph.””

Victoria said nothing.

Alexander continued.

“He says Eliana was his mother.””

The room went silent.

The servants froze.

Victoria stared at Malik.

Not with confusion.

With recognition.

Malik noticed.

“You know my mom?””

Victoria’s lips parted.

For a moment, she looked like she might answer.

Then she looked away.

“No.””

Malik lowered his eyes.

Alexander saw it.

The lie.

He had spent decades negotiating billion-dollar contracts.

He knew when someone was hiding something.

“Mother,” he said quietly.

Victoria looked at him.

“Tell me the truth.””

Her expression hardened.

“Sometimes the truth destroys people.””

Alexander laughed once.

A bitter sound.

“My life was destroyed seven years ago.””

He looked at the key.

“I think it’s time I found out why.””

Before Victoria could respond, another voice came from the hallway.

“Alexander?””

They all turned.

A man in his fifties walked toward them.

Dr. Charles Whitmore.

The family doctor.

The same man who had signed Eliana Bennett’s death certificate.

Malik immediately stepped closer to Alexander.

Because he recognized the name.

His mother had written it on a piece of paper.

A name surrounded by angry red marks.

Alexander noticed the movement.

“You know him?””

Malik nodded slowly.

“My mom told me never to trust him.””

Charles stopped walking.

His face changed.

Only slightly.

But enough.

Alexander turned toward him.

“Why would my dead wife warn her son about you?””

Charles forced a laugh.

“This is ridiculous.””

“No.””

Alexander’s voice cut through the room.

“What’s ridiculous is that I spent seven years mourning a woman who may have been alive.””

Charles looked at Victoria.

That was enough.

Alexander saw the exchange.

A silent conversation.

A warning.

A secret.

“You both know something.””

Victoria stepped forward.

“Alexander, listen to me.””

“No.””

His eyes were filled with anger now.

“You listen to me.””

The billionaire who controlled companies and entire industries stood in his own house, demanding answers from the two people closest to him.

“Where was Eliana?””

Nobody answered.

“Who took her?””

Silence.

“Why did you tell me she died?””

Still nothing.

Then Malik quietly spoke.

“She said she was running away.””

Everyone looked at him.

Alexander softened.

“From who?””

Malik looked at the floor.

“She said someone she loved betrayed her.””

Victoria closed her eyes.

Charles looked nervous.

Alexander felt something break inside him.

Because Eliana had trusted someone.

Someone close enough to hurt her.

He looked around the mansion.

At the walls.

The paintings.

The memories.

Then he noticed something.

A small wooden door beneath the staircase.

He had seen it thousands of times.

But he had never opened it.

“Where does that lead?””

Victoria immediately answered.

“Storage.””

Too fast.

Alexander walked toward it.

“Mother.””

She stepped in front of him.

“You don’t want to open that.””

“Why?””

Her voice lowered.

“Because some things are buried for a reason.””

Alexander stared at her.

“Did you bury my wife?””

The question hung in the air.

Victoria’s face collapsed for a moment.

Then she whispered:

“You have no idea what Eliana was involved in.””

Malik watched Alexander.

The billionaire looked like someone had just stabbed him.

“Explain.””

Victoria looked at the key.

Then at Malik.

Then at Charles.

Finally, she stepped aside.

“Open it.””

Everyone held their breath.

Alexander inserted the key.

The lock clicked.

The wooden door slowly opened.

Behind it was not a storage room.

It was a hidden office.

Dust covered the furniture.

Old papers filled the shelves.

A photograph sat on the desk.

Alexander walked inside.

His hands shook as he picked it up.

It was Eliana.

But not the Eliana he remembered.

She looked older.

Tired.

And she was holding a baby.

A baby wrapped in a blue blanket.

A baby with a small scar on his chin.

Malik gasped.

“That’s me.””

Alexander couldn’t speak.

His eyes moved to the date written on the back.

Seven years earlier.

The same week Eliana disappeared.

Then he saw the letter beside the photograph.

His name was written on the envelope.

Alexander Bennett.

With trembling fingers, he opened it.

The first line destroyed him.

“Alexander, if you are reading this, it means I failed to come back.””

His breathing stopped.

Malik moved closer.

“What does it say?””

Alexander kept reading.

The next sentence made his face turn pale.

“Do not trust my family.””

A floorboard creaked behind them.

Everyone turned.

The hidden office doorway was empty.

But on the ground was a small piece of paper.

Someone had slipped it through the opening.

Alexander picked it up.

Only three words were written.

*She is alive.*

And beneath those words was a name.

May you like

A name Alexander had not seen in seven years.

Eliana Bennett.
