Chapter 5: The Mother Who Chose Silence
For a moment, nobody moved.
The abandoned building held its breath.
Alexander stood between the two women who had shaped his entire life.
One was the woman he had spent seven years mourning.
The other was the woman who raised him.
His wife.
His mother.
Both had secrets.
Both had lied.
And both were standing in front of him.
Victoria Bennett looked nothing like the powerful woman who controlled the Bennett household.
Her expensive coat was soaked from the rain.
Her hands were shaking.
But her eyes were fixed on Eliana.
“You should have stayed hidden,” Victoria whispered.
Eliana’s face hardened.
“You should have told him the truth.””
Alexander looked between them.
“What truth?””
Neither woman answered.
His patience disappeared.
“No more.””
His voice echoed through the empty building.
“No more secrets. No more protecting me with lies.””
He pointed at Victoria.
“You knew she was alive.””
Victoria looked down.
Alexander felt his chest tighten.
That silence was enough.
“You knew.””
“I suspected.””
“Suspected?””
His laugh was filled with disbelief.
“You saw a woman you claimed was dead standing in front of you, and you suspected?””
Victoria closed her eyes.
“Alexander…”
“No.””
He stepped back.
“I spent years visiting a grave that had nothing in it.””
His voice cracked.
“I destroyed myself trying to understand why she left.””
Eliana looked at him.
Pain filled her expression.
“I never left you.””
Alexander turned toward her.
“Then why didn’t you come home?””
The question was quiet.
But it hurt more than anger.
Eliana had no answer.
Charles Whitmore watched them silently.
Almost enjoying the pain.
Alexander noticed.
“You.””
The doctor looked at him.
“You’re the one who signed the papers.””
Charles nodded slowly.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Charles looked toward Victoria.
“She knows.””
Alexander followed his gaze.
“Mother.””
Victoria finally looked at him.
“When Eliana disappeared, I thought she was dead.””
Alexander waited.
“But?””
Victoria swallowed.
“But two days later, I found out she had survived.””
The words hit him.
Two days.
Two days when his wife was alive.
Two days when someone knew.
“And you did nothing?””
Victoria’s eyes filled with tears.
“I tried.””
“No.””
Alexander shook his head.
“You didn’t.””
“I went to find her.””
“And?””
Victoria looked away.
“And I found out she had Malik.””
The name changed the air.
Alexander’s expression softened for only a second.
Then anger returned.
“You knew about my son.””
Victoria nodded.
“Yes.””
A painful silence followed.
Alexander looked like the answer physically hurt him.
“How long?””
“Since the beginning.””
Seven years.
The number felt like a knife.
“You knew I had a child.””
“Yes.””
“And you let him sell flowers on the street?””
Victoria looked devastated.
“I didn’t know where he was.””
Alexander stared at her.
“You just said you knew.””
“I knew he existed.””
Her voice broke.
“But Eliana disappeared with him. She changed names. She moved constantly.””
Alexander turned away.
He couldn’t understand.
He didn’t know who to blame anymore.
Everyone had pieces of the truth.
And somehow, he was the only person who knew nothing.
Eliana stepped closer.
“I wanted to tell you.””
He looked at her.
“Then why didn’t you?””
She took a shaky breath.
“Because the first time I tried, someone attacked me.””
Alexander froze.
“What?””
Eliana looked at Charles.
The doctor’s expression changed.
“You remember that night.””
Charles said nothing.
Alexander noticed.
“What night?””
Eliana’s voice became quieter.
“The night of the accident.””
The room went still.
Everyone knew the story.
A car crash.
A missing body.
A tragic ending.
But nobody knew the truth.
“There was no accident,” Eliana said.
Alexander stared.
“What?””
“My car was forced off the road.””
Charles looked away.
“Careful, Eliana.””
She ignored him.
“I survived.””
Alexander’s breathing slowed.
“Who did it?””
Eliana looked at Victoria.
Then at Charles.
“I don’t know who gave the order.””
A pause.
“But I know who helped cover it up.””
Alexander looked at his mother.
Victoria whispered:
“Eliana…”
“No.””
Eliana shook her head.
“He deserves to know.””
Victoria looked broken.
“I was trying to protect him.””
“By destroying his life?””
The words landed hard.
Alexander watched his mother lower her head.
For the first time, he wondered if he had ever truly known her.
“My father…”
He swallowed.
“Was he involved?””
Victoria didn’t answer.
She didn’t need to.
Alexander closed his eyes.
His father.
The man whose portrait hung in the mansion.
The man whose advice he remembered.
The man who taught him business.
All those memories suddenly felt uncertain.
Charles stepped forward.
“You need to understand something, Alexander.””
Nobody looked at him.
“The Bennett family was built on sacrifices.””
Alexander stared.
“Sacrifices?””
Charles nodded.
“Your father made difficult choices.””
“He hurt people.””
“Yes.””
The honesty shocked him.
Charles continued.
“But he believed he was protecting the company.””
Alexander laughed bitterly.
“My wife and child were a business decision?””
Charles said nothing.
That silence was the answer.
A sudden noise came from outside.
A car door slammed.
Everyone turned.
Charles looked toward the entrance.
His expression changed.
Fear.
Not guilt.
Fear.
“What did you do?”” Victoria asked.
Charles looked at her.
“You should have stayed out of this.””
The sound of footsteps approached.
Multiple people.
Alexander moved closer to Eliana.
“Who is coming?””
Eliana whispered:
“The people who have been searching for us.””
The door opened.
Three men entered.
The first one was wearing a black suit.
Older.
Calm.
He looked at Alexander like they had met before.
But they hadn’t.
“My name is Richard Vale.””
Alexander froze.
The name.
The name from the documents.
The ghost from the past.
Richard looked around the room.
“So.””
His eyes moved to Eliana.
“She finally came home.””
Alexander stepped forward.
“You know her.””
Richard smiled.
“I know everyone in this room.””
His gaze moved to Victoria.
“Especially the people who betrayed me.””
Victoria looked shocked.
“What are you talking about?””
Richard laughed softly.
“Still pretending?””
Alexander felt the ground shifting beneath him.
Too many secrets.
Too many lies.
Richard looked at him.
“Your father and I built something together.””
Alexander’s jaw tightened.
“And then?””
Richard smiled.
“Then your father decided he wanted everything for himself.””
The room went silent.
“My father betrayed you.””
“Yes.””
“And my family paid the price?””
Richard looked at Eliana.
“She discovered the truth.””
Alexander glanced at Eliana.
Richard continued.
“She found the records. She found the money transfers. She found the evidence.””
“And you tried to kill her.””
Richard didn’t answer.
That was enough.
Alexander stepped forward.
“You hurt my wife.””
Richard smiled.
“No.””
He looked at him carefully.
“Your wife hurt herself.””
Alexander’s expression darkened.
“What does that mean?””
Richard reached into his coat.
He pulled out a small envelope.
Then placed it on the table.
“I think you should see what Eliana never told you.””
Alexander looked at the envelope.
His name was written on it.
Again.
But this time…
The handwriting wasn’t Eliana’s.
It was his father’s.
Richard stepped back.
“Inside that letter is the reason your wife disappeared.””
Alexander stared at it.
His hands moved toward the envelope.
But before he touched it, Eliana grabbed his arm.
“Alexander.””
He looked at her.
Her eyes were filled with fear.
“Don’t open it.””
He froze.
“Why?””
May you like
Because after seven years of searching for the truth…
The woman he loved was terrified of him finding it.
