Chapter 3: The Letter From the Woman Who Vanished
Alexander read the three words again.
*She is alive.*
The paper trembled between his fingers.
For seven years, he had forced himself to accept the impossible.
He had stood in front of cameras and told the world he was moving forward.
He had attended memorial events where strangers spoke about Eliana as if they knew her.
He had visited a grave that contained nothing but a name.
But now a single piece of paper had shattered everything he had built to survive.
Malik stood beside him, watching his face carefully.
“Mr. Bennett…”
Alexander looked down at the boy.
For the first time since they met, he looked less like a billionaire.
He looked like a husband who had just found a reason to hope.
“Your mother wrote this?””
Malik shook his head.
“No.””
“Then who did?””
Malik looked toward the open doorway.
“I don’t know.””
Alexander turned back to the hidden office.
The air felt different.
Someone had been here.
Someone had entered the room after they opened it.
Someone had wanted him to find that message.
He walked toward the doorway and looked down the dark hallway.
“Lock the front doors,” he ordered.
The servants immediately moved.
Victoria remained frozen near the entrance.
Charles Whitmore looked uncomfortable.
Alexander noticed.
“You knew about this room.””
Charles cleared his throat.
“I knew it existed.””
“Did you know about the letter?””
“No.””
Alexander stepped closer.
“Doctor, seven years ago you signed my wife’s death certificate.””
Charles looked away.
“I did what I was told.””
The words came out before he could stop them.
The entire room went silent.
Alexander’s expression changed.
“What did you say?””
Charles realized his mistake.
“I meant—”
“No.””
Alexander’s voice became quiet.
Dangerously quiet.
“You said you did what you were told.””
Victoria closed her eyes.
Charles looked at her.
Alexander saw everything.
The hesitation.
The fear.
The guilt.
“You lied to me.””
Charles shook his head.
“You don’t understand.””
“Then explain.””
Charles looked at Malik.
“That child should not be here.””
Alexander stepped between them.
“Careful.””
The warning in his voice made the doctor stop.
Malik grabbed the edge of Alexander’s coat.
He was trying not to show fear.
But Alexander noticed.
The boy had spent his entire life running from people who knew secrets about him.
And now those secrets were standing in front of him.
Alexander turned to Malik.
“Go with Mrs. Carter.””
An older servant stepped forward.
“She will take you upstairs.””
Malik hesitated.
“No.””
Alexander looked at him.
“Malik.””
“My mom told me not to leave when people start lying.””
The words surprised him.
“Why?””
“Because lies get bigger when nobody hears them.””
Alexander stared at him.
A nine-year-old boy had just said something that many adults never learned.
Victoria looked away.
Perhaps because she remembered Eliana saying the same thing.
Alexander knelt beside Malik.
“Stay close to Mrs. Carter. I promise I’ll find the truth.””
Malik studied him.
“You promise?””
Alexander nodded.
“Yes.””
The boy finally followed the servant upstairs.
But before disappearing around the corner, he turned back.
“Mr. Bennett?””
“Yes?””
“My mom always said if you found me, you would know what to do.””
Alexander felt his chest tighten.
“What did she mean?””
Malik shook his head.
“She never told me.””
Then he disappeared.
Alexander returned to the hidden office.
He picked up the letter again.
The handwriting was unmistakable.
Eliana’s handwriting.
He had seen it on birthday cards.
Love notes.
Grocery lists.
Every small piece of paper she had left around their home.
His hands shook as he unfolded the pages.
*Alexander,*
*If you are reading this, I am either gone forever or I finally found a way to bring the truth back to you.*
He stopped.
His eyes blurred.
Then he continued.
*I need you to know one thing first. I never left you. I never stopped loving you.*
Alexander closed his eyes.
Seven years of pain.
Seven years of believing she chose to disappear.
The letter continued.
*The night I vanished, I discovered something about the Bennett family. Something that could destroy people I cared about.*
He looked toward Victoria.
She stood silently.
*I wanted to tell you. I tried. But someone knew before I could.*
Alexander’s heartbeat quickened.
*They threatened Malik.*
His hand froze.
Malik.
His son.
*I knew I could not fight them alone. So I disappeared before they could find him.*
Alexander looked up.
“Malik was hidden from me.””
Nobody answered.
He kept reading.
*Alexander, I am sorry you lost seven years with your son. I am sorry I made you hate me. But if you knew the truth then, they would have killed him.*
The room became painfully quiet.
Alexander remembered Malik standing outside the restaurant.
Selling flowers.
Living in poverty.
While he had been living in a mansion.
A wave of guilt hit him.
His own son had been outside on cold streets.
And he had never known.
The letter continued.
*The person who betrayed me lives under your roof.*
Alexander looked at Victoria.
Then Charles.
*Do not trust anyone who tells you I died. They needed me gone because I knew what they did.*
A sound came from the hallway.
Everyone turned.
A servant stood there, pale.
“Mr. Bennett…”
Alexander folded the letter.
“What?””
“The security system recorded someone entering the estate thirty minutes ago.””
His eyes narrowed.
“Who?””
The servant swallowed.
“The cameras didn’t capture a face.””
Alexander walked toward him.
“Then what did they capture?””
The servant handed him a tablet.
On the screen was footage from the hallway outside the hidden office.
A figure wearing dark clothing walked toward the door.
The person stopped.
Looked directly into the camera.
Then removed a glove.
Alexander stared.
Because he knew that hand.
A silver ring.
A small scar.
A ring he had seen every day for years.
Victoria gasped.
“No…”
Alexander looked at her.
“You recognize them.””
She didn’t answer.
He played the video again.
The figure moved closer.
The camera captured half of the face.
Not enough to identify them completely.
But enough.
Enough to make Alexander’s blood run cold.
Because the person in the footage was supposed to be dead.
He looked at Victoria.
“Who is that?””
Victoria’s lips trembled.
For the first time in years, the powerful woman who controlled the Bennett household looked terrified.
“That’s not possible.””
Alexander stepped forward.
“Who is it?””
Victoria whispered the name.
A name that changed everything.
“Eliana.””
The tablet nearly slipped from Alexander’s hand.
“No.””
Victoria looked at him.
“She came back.””
The room went silent.
Alexander stared at the screen.
His wife.
The woman he had buried.
The woman who had left behind a child.
The woman who had written him a letter.
Was alive.
Then the security alarm suddenly exploded through the mansion.
Red lights flashed.
A servant shouted from the front hall.
“Mr. Bennett!””
Alexander ran.
He reached the entrance and stopped.
The front door was wide open.
Rain poured inside.
And on the marble floor was a trail of fresh flower petals.
Roses.
The same flowers Malik had been selling outside the restaurant.
At the end of the trail was a small envelope.
Alexander picked it up.
His name was written on the front.
Not in Eliana’s handwriting.
In someone else’s.
He opened it.
Inside was only one sentence.
*If you want your wife back, come alone.*
And beneath it was an address.
May you like
An abandoned building on the edge of the city.
The place where Eliana Bennett had supposedly died seven years ago.
