Chapter 6: The Letter His Father Left Behind

Alexander stared at the envelope in his hand.

His father’s handwriting.

The same handwriting that had appeared on birthday cards, business documents, and the few personal notes he had kept locked away after his death.

For years, Alexander believed his father’s legacy was simple.

A successful businessman.

A strict parent.

A man who built an empire.

But standing inside a forgotten building with his missing wife alive beside him, nothing felt simple anymore.

“Why shouldn’t I open it?”” Alexander asked.

Eliana looked at the envelope.

“Because once you know what’s inside, you can’t pretend anymore.””

His expression hardened.

“I stopped pretending seven years ago.””

The words hurt her.

He saw it.

But he couldn’t take them back.

Richard Vale watched from the other side of the room.

“You see, Alexander, that is why your father chose you.””

Alexander looked at him.

“Chose me for what?””

Richard smiled faintly.

“To carry a truth you were never meant to discover.””

Charles shifted uncomfortably.

“We should leave.””

Richard glanced at him.

“You don’t give orders anymore.””

The doctor immediately went quiet.

Alexander noticed.

Richard had power over Charles.

Maybe even over Victoria.

And that frightened him more than anything.

He looked at the envelope again.

“What’s inside?””

Richard leaned against the wall.

“Your father’s confession.””

Victoria’s face changed.

“No.””

Everyone turned toward her.

Alexander looked at his mother.

“You know what it says.””

She looked away.

“You don’t understand.””

“I’m tired of hearing that.””

His voice rose.

“Everyone keeps saying I don’t understand. My wife says she was protecting me. You say you were protecting me. Charles says he made mistakes.””

He pointed at the envelope.

“But nobody tells me the truth.””

The room became silent.

Finally, Alexander opened it.

Inside was a single letter.

Old.

Yellowed.

Folded carefully.

He recognized the first line immediately.

*My son,*

His fingers tightened.

He started reading.

*If you are holding this letter, then the things I feared have already happened.*

Alexander’s heartbeat increased.

*You have discovered the truth about Eliana. You have discovered the truth about Malik. And you have discovered the truth about me.*

He stopped.

Malik’s name.

His father knew.

Years before Alexander ever did.

He kept reading.

*I was not a good man.*

The sentence shocked him.

His father never apologized.

Not once.

*I built Bennett Industries with ambition, but ambition became greed. I trusted the wrong people. I made deals I cannot undo.*

Alexander looked up briefly.

Richard watched him silently.

Then he continued.

*Richard Vale helped me create the company. He was brilliant. Dangerous. And when I realized what he wanted, it was already too late.*

Richard’s expression changed.

Only slightly.

But Alexander saw anger.

*I tried to remove him. I thought I was protecting my family. Instead, I created a war.*

Alexander swallowed.

*When Eliana discovered the records, she found what I had hidden. She found the payments. She found the names.*

His eyes moved to Eliana.

She looked down.

*She wanted to expose everything. She wanted the world to know what happened.*

The next line made Alexander stop.

*I begged her not to.*

The room was completely silent.

He continued.

*Not because I wanted to save myself. Because I knew Richard would destroy everyone around her.*

Alexander looked at Richard.

“You threatened her.””

Richard didn’t respond.

The letter continued.

*But Eliana was stronger than I was. She refused to stay quiet.*

A painful smile appeared on Alexander’s face.

That sounded like her.

Always brave.

Always impossible to control.

*The night she disappeared, I made the worst decision of my life.*

Alexander’s breathing slowed.

*I asked Victoria to hide her.*

He looked up.

His mother covered her mouth.

“No…”

Alexander stared.

“You asked her?””

Victoria shook her head.

“I didn’t know what would happen.””

The letter continued.

*I believed keeping Eliana hidden would save her life. I believed Richard would stop searching if he thought she was gone.*

Alexander’s eyes moved quickly.

*I was wrong.*

A cold feeling moved through him.

*Richard found out. The accident happened because of me. Because my choices put Eliana in danger.*

Alexander lowered the letter.

Eliana’s eyes were wet.

“You knew?””

His voice was barely a whisper.

She nodded.

“Your father told me before he died.””

Alexander looked away.

The pain was too much.

His father knew.

His mother knew.

Everyone knew pieces.

Everyone except him.

He continued reading.

*Alexander, there is one thing you must know. Malik was never an accident.*

His heart stopped.

*He was the reason Eliana survived. He was the reason she fought.*

Alexander looked toward the entrance.

His son.

A child he had missed seven years with.

*Protect him. Because Richard knows Malik exists. And he knows what Malik represents.*

Alexander looked at Richard.

“What does my son represent?””

Richard smiled.

“Proof.””

“Proof of what?””

Richard stepped closer.

“That your father’s empire was never legally yours.””

The room went quiet.

Alexander frowned.

“What?””

Richard continued.

“Your father left a hidden agreement. If certain information became public, ownership of Bennett Industries would change.””

Alexander looked back at the letter.

His father’s words continued.

*The company was never built only with money. It was built with secrets. If those secrets are revealed, Bennett Industries will belong to the people who were harmed.*

Alexander stared.

“Malik?””

Richard nodded.

“Your son is connected to the evidence.””

“How?””

Richard smiled.

“Because Eliana saved the original records.””

Alexander looked at his wife.

She didn’t deny it.

“You hid evidence with a child?””

“I hid the only thing they couldn’t find.””

Alexander looked confused.

“Why?””

Eliana’s voice became quiet.

“Because nobody searches for the truth inside a child’s backpack.””

The words hit him.

The photograph.

The key.

The old cloth.

Everything Malik carried.

The truth had been with him all along.

A sudden sound interrupted them.

A phone ringing.

Everyone looked around.

It was coming from Alexander’s pocket.

He pulled it out.

Unknown number.

He answered.

“Hello?””

For several seconds, there was only silence.

Then a small voice spoke.

“Mr. Bennett?””

Alexander froze.

“Malik?””

The boy’s breathing was shaky.

“Someone came to the house.””

Alexander immediately stood.

“What happened?””

“I don’t know.””

“Where are you?””

“I’m hiding.””

Alexander’s entire body went cold.

“Malik, listen to me. Stay where you are. Do not move.””

A whisper came through the phone.

“He’s looking for the key.””

Alexander looked at Eliana.

Her face turned pale.

“Who?””

Malik’s voice became quieter.

“The man from my mom’s picture.””

Alexander felt his blood run cold.

“What man?””

A pause.

Then Malik whispered:

“The man with the same scar as you.””

The call suddenly cut off.

Alexander stared at the phone.

Nobody spoke.

Then Eliana grabbed his arm.

“Alexander.””

He looked at her.

“Who has my son?””

Before she could answer, Richard smiled.

Not with victory.

With certainty.

“Now you understand.””

Alexander turned toward him.

“Understand what?””

Richard looked toward the dark hallway.

“That the game was never about your wife.””

A pause.

“It was always about your son.””

The lights in the building suddenly went out.

May you like

And somewhere in the darkness…

A child screamed.
