Chapter 7: The Boy Who Carried the Truth
The scream lasted only a second.
But for Alexander Bennett, it felt like an eternity.
“Malik!””
He shouted into the phone.
Nothing.
Only static.
Then silence.
Alexander’s entire world narrowed to one thought.
His son was in danger.
Not a company.
Not a reputation.
Not billions of dollars.
A child.
A child who had spent nine years waiting for a father who never came.
Eliana grabbed his arm.
“We need to go.””
Alexander turned toward Richard.
“You knew this would happen.””
Richard didn’t move.
“I knew they would come.””
“Who?””
Richard looked at him.
“The same people who have been protecting the truth for years.””
Alexander’s anger exploded.
“My son is not a piece in your war.””
“No.””
Richard’s voice became colder.
“He is the reason the war started.””
Alexander stepped forward.
“I swear if anything happens to him—”
“You’ll do what?””
Richard interrupted.
“Destroy me?””
The older man smiled.
“You already tried that once.””
Alexander froze.
“What are you talking about?””
Richard looked at Eliana.
“She never told you.””
Eliana’s expression changed.
“Richard.””
“No.””
He looked back at Alexander.
“Ask your wife what happened the night your father died.””
Alexander turned slowly.
“Eliana?””
She looked away.
That hesitation terrified him.
But before he could ask, the sound of approaching vehicles filled the street.
Black SUVs.
Several of them.
Alexander looked toward the broken windows.
“They’re here.””
Victoria moved closer.
“We have to leave.””
Alexander looked at her.
For a moment, he saw the woman who raised him.
Not the liar.
Not the person hiding secrets.
His mother.
“Where is Malik?””
Victoria swallowed.
“I don’t know.””
His face changed.
“You were at the mansion.””
“Yes.””
“You left him there?””
“I thought the security team would protect him.””
Alexander shook his head.
“You thought?””
The words hurt her.
But he didn’t stop.
“My son was taken because everyone around him kept thinking instead of acting.””
Eliana stepped between them.
“Alexander.””
He looked at her.
“I know.””
His voice softened slightly.
“But I’m bringing him home.””
A gunshot echoed outside.
Everyone froze.
The windows shook.
Charles moved backward.
“They found us.””
Alexander looked at him.
“You knew they were coming.””
Charles didn’t answer.
That was enough.
Alexander grabbed him by the collar.
“You knew.””
Charles looked terrified.
“I was trying to stop this.””
“By doing what?””
“By keeping the information hidden.””
Alexander pushed him away.
“Everyone keeps using that excuse.””
The room filled with footsteps.
Closer.
Closer.
Eliana grabbed Alexander’s hand.
“There’s another way out.””
He looked at her.
“You know this place?””
She nodded.
“I stayed here after the accident.””
The words hit him.
“You were here?””
“For months.””
Alexander stared.
“All this time?””
“I wanted to come back.””
Her voice broke.
“Every day.””
A heavy silence passed.
Then she whispered:
“But every time I got close, someone reminded me what would happen to Malik.””
Alexander looked at her.
“Who?””
Eliana looked toward Richard.
The answer was obvious.
But Richard shook his head.
“No.””
Everyone looked at him.
For the first time, he looked genuinely angry.
“You still don’t understand.””
Alexander stepped forward.
“Then explain.””
Richard stared at him.
“I was not the only person protecting secrets.””
He looked at Victoria.
“She knows.””
Victoria’s face turned pale.
Alexander’s patience disappeared.
“Knows what?””
Victoria closed her eyes.
“My husband wasn’t the only person involved.””
Alexander felt his stomach drop.
“My father?””
She nodded.
“No.””
A pause.
“Your grandfather.””
The room went silent.
Alexander stared.
“My grandfather died before I was born.””
“Yes.””
Victoria’s voice shook.
“But what he created survived.””
Before Alexander could ask more, a loud crash came from upstairs.
Everyone looked toward the sound.
The mansion.
Malik.
Alexander ran toward the exit.
Eliana followed.
They reached the street as another explosion of glass came from the building.
The security lights flickered.
Then a figure appeared in the doorway.
A man holding Malik’s backpack.
Alexander stopped.
Not because of the backpack.
Because of the face.
The scar.
The same scar above the eyebrow.
The same scar from the photograph.
Malik had been right.
The man looked at Alexander.
And smiled.
“Hello, brother.””
Nobody spoke.
Alexander stared.
“Brother?””
The man walked forward.
Rain fell between them.
“I was wondering when you would finally learn the truth.””
Alexander’s mind raced.
“No.””
The man laughed softly.
“You always were the favorite.””
Victoria stepped forward.
“Daniel.””
The man looked at her.
“Mother.””
Alexander felt the world shift.
Mother.
He looked at Victoria.
Then at the man.
Then back at Victoria.
“What is this?””
Victoria looked broken.
“Alexander…”
“No.””
His voice was shaking.
“You have another son?””
Daniel smiled.
“Not just another son.””
He held up Malik’s backpack.
“I’m the son your father tried to erase.””
Alexander couldn’t breathe.
The pieces started connecting.
The scar.
The photograph.
The secrets.
The hidden family.
Daniel looked at Eliana.
“You really thought hiding the boy would work?””
Eliana stepped forward.
“Leave him out of this.””
Daniel laughed.
“Still protecting everyone.””
Alexander moved toward him.
“Where is Malik?””
Daniel’s smile disappeared.
“He’s alive.””
Relief came for half a second.
Then Daniel continued.
“For now.””
Alexander’s fists tightened.
“What do you want?””
Daniel looked at him.
“What I was promised.””
“By who?””
Daniel looked at Victoria.
“By our father.””
Victoria whispered:
“No.””
Daniel smiled.
“You never told him.””
Alexander looked at his mother.
“What promise?””
Daniel answered for her.
“The company.””
The rain fell harder.
“Your father promised me everything.””
Alexander shook his head.
“That’s impossible.””
Daniel stepped closer.
“Is it?””
He pulled something from his pocket.
A document.
Old.
Signed.
Alexander stared.
The signature at the bottom made his heart stop.
His father’s name.
Daniel held it out.
“Your father created Bennett Industries with two sons.””
Alexander looked at Victoria.
She couldn’t meet his eyes.
“One son inherited the empire.””
Daniel smiled.
“The other one was erased.””
Alexander felt sick.
“Why?””
Daniel’s expression changed.
Because beneath the anger was something worse.
Pain.
“Because I wasn’t perfect.””
Nobody spoke.
Daniel continued.
“Your father believed I was a mistake.””
Victoria whispered:
“He was sick.””
Daniel looked at her.
“No.””
His voice cracked.
“He was cruel.””
The words hung in the air.
Alexander looked at Malik’s backpack.
His son was somewhere with this man.
A man who carried the same scar.
A man who shared his blood.
A man who had spent years living in the shadows.
“Where is Malik?””
Daniel looked at him.
“Safe.””
“Where?””
Daniel stepped back.
“If you want him back…”
A pause.
“You’ll bring me the evidence Eliana hid.””
Alexander looked at Eliana.
She shook her head.
“No.””
Daniel smiled.
“Then you’ll lose another family member.””
Alexander took a step forward.
“You already took him.””
Daniel looked almost disappointed.
“No, Alexander.””
He turned away.
“You lost him the same way you lost everything else.””
The words burned.
Daniel disappeared into the rain.
But before leaving, he dropped one final thing onto the ground.
A photograph.
Alexander picked it up.
It was old.
A family photo.
His father.
Victoria.
Daniel.
And a baby.
Alexander stared.
Because written on the back were four words.
May you like
Four words that changed everything.
*The first Bennett heir.*
