Chapter 9: The Truth Malik Hid

Alexander stared at the message until the screen went dark.

*Don’t trust him.*

Three words.

But they carried the weight of a warning from a child who had spent his entire life learning when adults were lying.

His eyes moved slowly around the room.

Eliana.

Victoria.

Richard.

Charles.

Someone among them had betrayed him.

Again.

“Who sent that?”” Eliana asked.

Alexander locked his phone.

“Malik.””

Her expression changed immediately.

“What did he say?””

Alexander looked at her.

“He said not to trust him.””

Nobody spoke.

The silence itself became an answer.

Richard stepped forward.

“Daniel sent that.””

Alexander looked at him.

“You don’t know that.””

Richard’s face hardened.

“I know Daniel.””

“You said you hated him.””

“I do.””

“Then why are you so certain?””

Richard had no response.

Alexander noticed.

Everyone here had been telling him what to believe.

But nobody had shown him the truth.

He looked at the evidence folder.

The documents.

The photographs.

The secrets.

For seven years, he had trusted people because they were family.

And family had failed him.

He took a step back.

“I’m going alone.””

Eliana immediately shook her head.

“No.””

“I have to.””

“Alexander, listen to me.””

“I listened for seven years.””

The words cut through the room.

His expression softened slightly.

But the pain remained.

“I spent seven years believing you abandoned me.””

Eliana looked down.

“I know.””

“And I spent tonight learning everyone was protecting me with lies.””

He looked at Malik’s message.

“I don’t know who to trust anymore.””

Nobody answered.

Because nobody could.

Alexander left the building alone.

But he didn’t go to Daniel.

Not yet.

He drove back to the Bennett Estate first.

Because one thing bothered him.

The message.

Malik had access to a phone.

Which meant someone gave it to him.

Someone close enough.

Someone who wanted Alexander to know something.

When he entered the mansion, the entire house was silent.

Too silent.

“Malik?””

No answer.

He walked through the halls.

Every room reminded him of what he had missed.

A child growing up.

A first word.

A first step.

A birthday.

All stolen by secrets.

Then he heard something.

A small sound.

From the hidden office.

Alexander opened the door.

And froze.

Malik was sitting inside.

Alive.

Alone.

The boy looked up.

“Mr. Bennett.””

Alexander rushed forward.

“Malik.””

He dropped to his knees.

For a moment, he forgot everything else.

The lies.

The betrayal.

The war.

His son was there.

He pulled Malik into his arms.

The boy hesitated.

Then hugged him back.

“You came.””

Alexander closed his eyes.

“Of course I came.””

Malik looked at him.

“I knew you would.””

Alexander pulled back.

“Who brought you here?””

Malik looked toward the doorway.

“I escaped.””

Alexander frowned.

“Escaped from Daniel?””

The boy nodded.

“He left me alone for a few minutes.””

“Why?””

Malik looked uncomfortable.

“He wanted me to find something.””

Alexander became alert.

“What?””

Malik reached into his backpack.

The same old backpack.

The one that had carried the truth across the city.

He pulled out a small notebook.

“My mom gave me this.””

Alexander recognized it.

“Why didn’t you show me before?””

Malik looked down.

“She told me not to unless I knew who my father was.””

Alexander felt a painful emotion rise.

“She knew I would find you.””

Malik nodded.

“She believed you would.””

He opened the notebook.

Inside were pages filled with handwriting.

Eliana’s.

But near the end was something different.

A child’s handwriting.

Malik’s.

“I wrote down things I remembered.””

Alexander looked at him.

“What things?””

Malik turned the page.

The first note was simple.

*The man with the scar came to our house.*

Alexander froze.

“What?””

Malik continued.

“He came many times.””

“Daniel?””

Malik shook his head.

“No.””

His face became serious.

“The other one.””

Alexander felt cold.

“What other one?””

Malik pointed at the next sentence.

*Mom said he was dangerous because he looked like Dad.*

Alexander’s breathing stopped.

The scar.

Another man.

Another secret.

“How many people had that scar?””

Malik shook his head.

“I don’t know.””

He turned another page.

There was a drawing.

Three men.

One was Alexander.

One was Daniel.

One was someone else.

A man with the same scar.

But older.

Alexander stared.

“Who is this?””

Malik whispered:

“Grandpa.””

The room went silent.

“Your grandfather?””

Malik nodded.

“My mom showed me pictures.””

Alexander sat back.

Impossible.

His grandfather.

Dead for years.

A scar.

The same scar passed through the family.

A mark.

A secret.

A warning.

Then Malik pointed to another page.

“She said this was the most important thing.””

Alexander read the words.

*The first heir was not Daniel.*

His eyes moved down.

*The first heir was never a son.*

Alexander looked confused.

“What does that mean?””

Malik shook his head.

“I don’t know.””

Then the door behind them closed.

Slowly.

Alexander stood.

“Who’s there?””

No answer.

He moved toward the door.

Then a voice came from the hallway.

“Your mother was right.””

Alexander froze.

Victoria.

He opened the door.

She stood there alone.

Tears in her eyes.

“How long have you known?””

She looked at Malik.

Then back at him.

“Longer than I should have.””

Alexander stepped forward.

“You knew Malik was here?””

“Yes.””

“And you let me think he was taken?””

“I needed to know if you were ready.””

His anger returned.

“Ready?””

Victoria shook her head.

“You still don’t understand.””

“No.””

Alexander pointed toward Malik.

“My son was scared.””

“I know.””

“My son was hiding.””

“I know.””

“Then explain.””

Victoria looked at the notebook.

“The truth your father hid wasn’t about Daniel.””

Alexander stared.

“Then what was it about?””

Victoria’s voice became barely a whisper.

“Your grandfather had a daughter.””

The room froze.

Alexander slowly shook his head.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“Impossible.””

Victoria looked at Malik.

“She was the first heir.””

Alexander felt dizzy.

A daughter.

A hidden child.

Another branch of the family.

Another secret.

“Who was she?””

Victoria looked at the notebook.

“Eliana knew.””

Alexander turned toward Malik.

“What?””

Malik looked scared.

“My mom said I should only tell you after you found the right person.””

“Who?””

The boy swallowed.

“She said the truth was not hidden in the company.””

A pause.

“It was hidden in the family.””

Suddenly, the lights went out.

The mansion disappeared into darkness.

A second later, every security screen turned on.

One by one.

Showing a live feed.

Daniel.

Standing outside the mansion.

But he wasn’t alone.

Beside him was a woman.

Older.

Gray-haired.

A woman Alexander had never seen before.

Until he noticed the scar.

The same scar.

The woman looked directly into the camera.

And spoke.

“Alexander Bennett.””

His blood went cold.

Because her voice sounded familiar.

Not from memory.

From somewhere else.

From Eliana’s stories.

The woman smiled.

“You finally found your family.””

The screen flickered.

Then displayed a name.

*Amelia Bennett.*

Alexander stared.

The first heir.

May you like

The person his entire family had erased.

And the woman who knew why Malik had been born into the middle of a war.
