Chapter 10: The Birth Record That Changed Everything

Dr. Bennett’s words stayed in the air.

Your son’s birth was changed on purpose.

Not a mistake.

Not an accident.

Not a hospital error.

On purpose.

I stared at the man standing in front of me.

Six years of my life had been built around one night.

One hospital room.

One story.

And now that story was falling apart piece by piece.

“Open the file,” I said.

Dr. Bennett looked at Simone.

Then at Evelyn.

Then finally at me.

“I need you to understand something.””

My patience disappeared.

“No.””

My voice echoed down the hallway.

“I have spent six years understanding lies.””

I stepped closer.

“Open the file.””

The doctor nodded.

Slowly, he opened the folder.

Inside were medical records.

Original documents.

Stamped pages.

Official signatures.

Things that should have never been hidden.

Grace moved beside me.

Her hand found mine.

Not because everything was fixed.

It wasn’t.

But because we were finally standing on the same side.

Dr. Bennett looked down.

“The night Noah was born, there were two mothers admitted within minutes of each other.””

My eyebrows tightened.

“Two mothers?””

He nodded.

“Yes.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“Are you saying the hospital confused two babies?””

Dr. Bennett shook his head.

“No.””

The answer surprised everyone.

“The babies were never switched.””

I looked at him.

“Then what happened?””

He turned the page.

“The records were altered after birth.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“By who?””

Dr. Bennett looked uncomfortable.

“I don’t know who physically changed the files.””

Then he looked at Simone.

“But I know who requested access.””

Nobody moved.

I already knew.

But I needed to hear it.

“Who?””

Dr. Bennett closed his eyes.

“Simone Carter.””

The silence afterward felt endless.

Simone immediately shook her head.

“No.””

Her voice cracked.

“No, that’s not true.””

Dr. Bennett looked at her.

“You came to my office six years ago.””

“I came because I was worried.””

“You asked me to change the records.””

“I asked questions.””

“You asked me to make Noah’s biological information unavailable.””

Grace covered her mouth.

I looked at Simone.

“Why?””

She looked at me.

There was fear in her eyes.

Not guilt.

Fear.

“I was trying to protect him.””

I almost couldn’t believe it.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

I pointed at the folder.

“Protect him from what?””

Simone looked at Noah.

Her expression softened.

For the first time that night, she didn’t look like someone fighting to win.

She looked like someone who was losing.

“I found out before Noah was born.””

“Found out what?””

She swallowed.

“That Darius might not be his father.””

Grace looked confused.

“Might?””

Dr. Bennett nodded.

“That was the concern.””

I looked at him.

“Concern?””

He opened another document.

“A DNA test was requested.””

My heart stopped.

“By who?””

He looked at Simone.

She didn’t answer.

Dr. Bennett did.

“By Simone.””

I stared at my wife.

“You tested my child?””

She whispered:

“I needed to know.””

“You had no right.””

“I was scared.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You were controlling.””

The words hurt her.

I saw it.

But I couldn’t take them back.

Grace stepped closer.

“What did the test show?””

Nobody spoke.

Dr. Bennett looked at the paper.

“The test confirmed something.””

My chest tightened.

“What?””

He looked at me.

“You are Noah’s biological father.””

The hallway froze.

I blinked.

“What?””

Simone looked shocked.

Even she didn’t seem prepared for that answer.

Dr. Bennett continued.

“The original DNA test showed a match between you and Noah.””

I looked at Simone.

“Then why?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Because I didn’t believe it.””

The anger inside me became overwhelming.

“You didn’t believe science?””

“I didn’t believe Grace.””

Grace stared at her.

“You thought I lied?””

Simone looked away.

“I thought you trapped him.””

The words cut deep.

Dr. Bennett closed the folder.

“The test proved the truth.””

I looked at him.

“Then why were the records changed?””

Nobody answered.

Then Evelyn spoke.

“Because my daughter couldn’t accept losing.””

Everyone looked at her.

Evelyn’s voice trembled.

“She believed if Grace disappeared and the records were changed, she could become Noah’s mother completely.””

Noah squeezed Grace’s hand.

I looked at him.

The boy who had spent his entire life surrounded by a lie.

I knelt.

“Buddy.””

He looked at me.

“Am I still your daddy?””

The question shattered me.

I immediately pulled him close.

“Yes.””

I held him tightly.

“Always.””

Grace cried silently beside us.

Then Dr. Bennett spoke again.

“There is one more thing.””

I looked up.

“What?””

He hesitated.

“The records were not only changed.””

My body tensed.

“What else?””

He handed me another paper.

“This was hidden with the original file.””

I read it.

And my blood ran cold.

It was a hospital incident report.

The date was the night Noah was born.

The description was short.

But one sentence made my hands shake.

*Patient Grace Carter reported being threatened by an individual claiming she would never see her child again.*

I looked at Grace.

“Who threatened you?””

Her face turned pale.

“I never saw the person’s face.””

“Then how do you know it was Simone?””

Grace looked at the floor.

“Because they said something only Simone knew.””

“What?””

Grace whispered:

“They said…”

She looked at Noah.

“They said, ‘By tomorrow, he’ll have a different mother.’”

Nobody spoke.

Then my phone buzzed.

A new message.

From an unknown number.

I opened it.

One sentence.

*You found the truth about Noah. Now find out what happened to his real mother.*

My blood froze.

I looked at Grace.

The color drained from her face.

“Darius…”

“What?””

She stared at the message.

Then whispered:

“That message isn’t saying I’m Noah’s mother.””

May you like

A pause.

“It’s saying there was another woman.””
