Chapter 7: The Truth Inside The Envelope
The envelope felt like it was burning my hand.
I didn’t want to open it.
That was the strangest part.
After everything I had discovered that night, after learning my wife had hidden my son’s mother from me, after hearing that my entire family had been built on secrets, I should have wanted answers more than anything.
But some part of me was afraid.
Because every truth I had uncovered had taken something away.
First, it took away my trust.
Then my memories.
Then the image of the woman I married.
What would this truth take next?
Evelyn stood across from me in the hallway.
For the first time, she didn’t look like the powerful woman everyone respected.
She looked old.
Tired.
Like she had been carrying a weight that had finally become too heavy.
Grace stood beside Noah, keeping one hand on his shoulder.
She watched Evelyn carefully.
Like she was standing near someone who had once destroyed her life.
“Why should I believe anything you say?”” I asked.
Evelyn nodded slowly.
“You shouldn’t.””
That answer surprised me.
She continued.
“I lost the right to ask for your trust years ago.””
Marcus looked at her.
“Then why are you here?””
Evelyn looked at Noah.
“Because I saw what my daughter became.””
The hallway went silent.
“My daughter was always ambitious,” Evelyn said.
Grace’s expression hardened.
“Ambitious isn’t the word.””
Evelyn looked down.
“No.””
She swallowed.
“Obsessed.””
The word hung in the air.
I looked at the envelope.
“What is inside?””
Evelyn took a breath.
“Something Simone never wanted you to see.””
I opened it.
Inside was a letter.
Old.
Folded many times.
The handwriting was unfamiliar.
I began reading.
*Darius,*
My heart stopped.
My name.
The letter was addressed to me.
*If you are reading this, then Grace finally found a way back to you. I am sorry it took so long.*
I looked up.
“Who wrote this?””
Evelyn’s eyes filled with tears.
“Your father.””
My hands tightened around the paper.
“My father?””
I hadn’t heard his name in years.
He passed away before Noah was born.
A man who had always been honest with me.
A man who taught me that family was built on truth.
I continued reading.
*I discovered something about Simone before Noah’s birth. Something I should have told you sooner.*
My breathing became shallow.
*She did not love the life you were building. She loved the future she imagined having with your name.*
I stopped.
The words hurt.
Because they sounded exactly like the woman I had just seen.
Evelyn spoke quietly.
“Your father found out Simone had been watching your relationship with Grace for months.””
Grace looked shocked.
“Watching?””
Evelyn nodded.
“She knew about the pregnancy before anyone else.””
I looked at Grace.
“Before me?””
Grace nodded slowly.
“I told her.””
My stomach tightened.
“You told Simone?””
“She was your fiancée.””
Grace looked down.
“I thought she would tell you.””
A painful silence followed.
Instead, Simone had used that information against her.
I kept reading.
*Simone believed Noah represented everything she wanted. A family. A legacy. A place beside you.*
My fingers trembled.
*When Grace gave birth, Simone made a choice that changed all of your lives.*
I looked at Evelyn.
“What choice?””
She closed her eyes.
“The choice to remove Grace.””
Noah looked up.
“Remove Mommy?””
The innocence in his voice almost broke me.
I immediately knelt beside him.
“No, buddy.””
I touched his cheek.
“Adults made mistakes.””
Grace looked at me.
Somehow, even after everything, she looked more worried about Noah than herself.
Evelyn continued.
“She didn’t just want Grace gone.””
Her voice became quieter.
“She wanted Darius to believe Grace abandoned him.””
Marcus looked angry.
“That’s why she forged the documents.””
Evelyn nodded.
“Yes.””
I stood.
“Then why didn’t you stop her?””
The question came out sharper than I intended.
Evelyn accepted it.
“Because I was weak.””
Nobody spoke.
“I convinced myself I was protecting my daughter.””
She looked at Grace.
“But I was protecting her from consequences.””
Grace’s eyes filled with tears.
“You knew I was suffering.””
Evelyn looked away.
“Yes.””
The honesty made it worse.
“You knew my son was growing up without me.””
“Yes.””
“And you did nothing.””
Evelyn whispered:
“I did something.””
She reached into her purse.
She pulled out another document.
“I kept proof.””
She handed it to me.
It was a bank record.
My eyes scanned the page.
A payment.
Six years ago.
A large payment.
From Simone’s account.
To a private security company.
“What is this?””
Evelyn answered:
“The people who helped take Grace away.””
My heart raced.
“Who?””
She hesitated.
Then looked at the end of the hallway.
At the elevator.
“Before I tell you…”
Her voice lowered.
“You need to understand something.””
“What?””
“Simone was not working alone.””
A chill moved through me.
I looked at Marcus.
He looked equally confused.
“Who else was involved?””
Evelyn stared at me.
Then whispered:
“Someone in your family.””
The elevator doors suddenly opened.
Everyone turned.
And standing there…
Was Simone.
Her face was calm.
Too calm.
She looked at the envelope in my hand.
Then at her mother.
“You really did it.””
Evelyn didn’t answer.
Simone stepped forward.
“I trusted you.””
I stared at my wife.
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You used her.””
Simone looked at me.
For a moment, I saw pain.
Then it disappeared.
“You still don’t understand.””
I held up the document.
“Then explain.””
She looked at Noah.
Then Grace.
Then me.
And said:
“I was never trying to steal your family.””
May you like
A pause.
“I was trying to save it.””
