Chapter 12: The Sister Who Came Back
Nobody moved.
The hallway became completely silent.
Lily Whitmore.
The name sounded impossible.
A person everyone believed was gone.
A woman connected to every secret.
Every lie.
Every missing piece.
Simone looked like she had seen a ghost.
“No.””
Her voice was barely a whisper.
I turned toward her.
“You said she disappeared.””
Simone stared at the guard.
“She did.””
The guard looked confused.
“Sir, she’s waiting downstairs.””
Grace stepped forward.
“Is she alive?””
Nobody answered.
The guard nodded.
“Yes.””
Grace covered her mouth.
Marcus looked at Simone.
“What have you done?””
Simone flinched.
“I didn’t…”
She stopped.
That hesitation told me everything.
I looked at her.
“You knew she was alive.””
“No.””
But her voice was weak.
“Simone.””
She closed her eyes.
Then whispered:
“I knew there was a chance.””
My anger returned.
“A chance?””
She looked at me.
“I thought she was gone.””
Grace stared at her.
“You thought?””
Simone looked away.
“I never saw her body.””
The words were devastating.
Because it meant everyone had been living with assumptions.
I walked toward the elevator.
“Take me to her.””
Nobody argued.
The elevator ride felt endless.
Noah stayed with Grace.
I watched their reflection in the elevator doors.
A father.
A son.
A mother who should have been there all along.
When the doors opened, a woman was sitting in the security office.
She looked tired.
Pale.
But alive.
She stood slowly when she saw us.
Her eyes immediately found Grace.
Then Noah.
Then Simone.
Tears filled her eyes.
“Grace.””
Grace froze.
“Lily?””
The two women stared at each other.
Six years of pain existed between them.
Then Lily started crying.
“I’m sorry.””
Grace shook her head.
“Why?””
Lily looked at Noah.
“Because I should have stopped her.””
Everyone looked at Simone.
Lily continued.
“My sister.””
The word carried pain.
“She wasn’t always like this.””
Simone looked down.
Lily stepped closer.
“I thought if I disappeared, she would stop.””
My eyes narrowed.
“Stop what?””
Lily looked at me.
“Taking things that weren’t hers.””
The room became quiet.
“She wanted Darius.””
Simone looked away.
“She wanted Noah.””
Simone closed her eyes.
“And she wanted my child.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
Lily’s voice trembled.
“When I gave birth…”
She looked at Grace.
“I lost my baby.””
Grace’s face changed.
“Oh my God.””
Lily nodded.
“I was grieving.””
She looked at Noah.
“Then Simone told me about Grace.””
I felt sick.
“What did she tell you?””
“That Grace’s baby was unwanted.””
Grace shook her head.
“That’s a lie.””
“I know.””
Lily cried.
“But I believed her.””
She looked at Simone.
“She convinced me to help her.””
The room froze.
Simone whispered:
“Lily…”
“No.””
Lily looked at her sister.
“No more protecting you.””
I watched Simone break.
For the first time.
“She told me she needed a family.””
Lily looked at me.
“She said Darius would leave her if he knew the truth.””
My hands tightened.
“What did she ask you to do?””
Lily took a deep breath.
“She asked me to create confusion.””
Grace looked horrified.
“About Noah?””
“Yes.””
Lily nodded.
“She wanted everyone to question his birth.””
I looked at Simone.
“You used your own sister.””
Simone started crying.
“I was desperate.””
“No.””
My voice was calm.
“You were selfish.””
The words landed.
Lily reached into her bag.
“I brought this.””
She handed me a small envelope.
“Another secret?””
Her eyes filled.
“No.””
She looked at Noah.
“The last one.””
I opened it.
Inside was a handwritten note.
The handwriting was unfamiliar.
But the signature at the bottom made my heart stop.
Grace looked over my shoulder.
Then gasped.
“Darius…”
The note was signed:
*Simone Carter.*
But the date was six years ago.
Before Noah was born.
I read the first line.
And my entire body went cold.
*If anything happens to me, make sure Darius knows I was never the person he should have feared.*
I looked up.
Simone was staring at the letter.
Terrified.
Because she knew what it meant.
There was still one final secret.
And this time…
May you like
It wasn’t about what Simone did.
It was about what someone did to Simone.
