Chapter 14: The Final Betrayal
I thought I had already experienced the worst kind of betrayal.
I was wrong.
Because betrayal from an enemy hurts.
But betrayal from someone you love?
Someone you invite into your home?
Someone who sits at your table?
That destroys something deeper.
I looked at Simone.
“Who?””
She didn’t answer.
“Simone.””
Her eyes moved toward Marcus.
Then Evelyn.
Then Lily.
Like she was trying to decide whether telling the truth would destroy everything.
I stepped closer.
“No more protecting people.””
She nodded.
“You’re right.””
A tear fell.
“I protected the wrong people for too long.””
She looked at me.
“The person who helped my mother…”
She paused.
“Was your brother.””
The world stopped.
I stared.
“My brother?””
I didn’t even know what to say.
My younger brother Adrian.
The person who stood beside me when our father died.
The person who gave a speech at my wedding.
The person who held Noah the day he was born.
“No.””
Simone nodded.
“Yes.””
Marcus looked shocked.
“Why?””
Simone looked at me.
“Because Adrian hated you.””
The words cut.
“Hated me?””
She nodded.
“He thought your father gave you everything.””
I shook my head.
“That’s insane.””
“He believed you took the company.””
I laughed.
“The company was offered to me because he didn’t want it.””
Simone looked down.
“He changed after your father died.””
I remembered.
The distance.
The anger.
The arguments.
I thought it was grief.
I never thought it was resentment.
“He blamed me for everything.””
Simone continued.
“And when he found out Grace was pregnant…”
My stomach tightened.
“He saw an opportunity.””
Grace looked at me.
“What opportunity?””
Simone answered.
“To make you lose everything.””
Silence.
Marcus took the flash drive.
“Let’s see what’s on it.””
We found a private room.
No guests.
No noise.
Just the truth waiting.
Marcus connected the drive.
A video appeared.
The image was old.
Security footage.
A hospital hallway.
The date was six years ago.
I leaned closer.
There they were.
Evelyn.
Adrian.
Simone.
My brother.
My mother-in-law.
My wife.
All standing together.
My chest tightened.
I watched Adrian hand something to Evelyn.
A folder.
Then he said something.
The audio was unclear.
Marcus enhanced it.
A few seconds later, we heard his voice.
“Once Darius loses Grace, he loses the reason he thinks he deserves everything.””
I closed my eyes.
The pain was physical.
Grace touched my arm.
I kept watching.
Adrian continued.
“He always wins.””
Evelyn replied.
“He’ll never know.””
Then Simone appeared.
Younger.
Different.
Still herself.
But not the woman I knew tonight.
Adrian looked at her.
“Are you ready?””
Simone hesitated.
Then nodded.
The video ended.
Nobody spoke.
I stared at the blank screen.
My brother.
The person who knew every wound I carried.
The person who knew how much family meant to me.
He used it against me.
My phone rang.
I looked at the screen.
Adrian.
Nobody moved.
Marcus whispered:
“Answer.””
I did.
“Hello?””
Silence.
Then:
“Darius.””
His voice.
Older.
Tired.
“You found it.””
I felt cold.
“You knew I would.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
A long pause.
Then he said:
“Because you deserved the truth.””
I almost laughed.
“You don’t get to say that.””
“I know.””
“Where are you?””
Another pause.
“I’m coming to you.””
“No.””
My voice hardened.
“You’re not walking away again.””
“I’m not.””
The call went quiet.
Then Adrian said:
“I need to tell you something before Simone does.””
My eyes narrowed.
“What?””
His voice dropped.
“The baby wasn’t the only thing that was taken from that hospital.””
I froze.
“What are you talking about?””
He whispered:
“Your father left something behind.””
I looked at Marcus.
“What?””
Adrian continued.
“A secret.””
The line crackled.
“Something he knew about Simone.””
My heart raced.
“My father knew?””
“Yes.””
“Then why didn’t he tell me?””
Silence.
Then Adrian said:
“Because he died trying to protect you.””
The call ended.
I stood there.
Holding the phone.
Everyone stared.
Grace stepped closer.
“What did he say?””
I looked at them.
“My father knew.””
Marcus frowned.
“Knew what?””
I looked toward the door.
Because suddenly I understood.
The lies didn’t begin six years ago.
May you like
They began before Noah was born.
And my father had been trying to stop them.
