Chapter 6: The Woman Who Knew Too Much

I stared at my phone.

The call had ended.

But the words remained.

You were never supposed to leave that hospital alive.

For a few seconds, nobody spoke.

Grace looked at me.

“Darius?””

I couldn’t answer.

My mind was trapped between two versions of my life.

The one I remembered.

And the one everyone had hidden from me.

Marcus stepped closer.

“What did she say?””

I looked at him.

“She said I wasn’t supposed to leave the hospital alive.””

His face changed.

Not surprise.

Recognition.

“You knew?””

“No.””

But he looked away too quickly.

“Marcus.””

He sighed.

“I knew something was wrong.””

I felt anger rising again.

“Everyone knew something was wrong except me?””

“No.””

He looked directly at me.

“You were the person they wanted to protect.””

I shook my head.

“Protect?””

I laughed.

“They stole my son’s mother.””

“I know.””

“They lied to me for six years.””

“I know.””

“Then don’t call that protection.””

Marcus lowered his eyes.

He didn’t argue.

Because he knew I was right.

Grace stood quietly beside Noah.

I noticed her hands were shaking.

“Darius.””

I looked at her.

“There’s something I never told you.””

Another secret.

Another hidden piece.

I closed my eyes.

“Please tell me this is the last one.””

She looked down.

“I don’t know.””

That answer hurt.

But I appreciated the honesty.

“What?””

Grace took a deep breath.

“When I was in the hospital, before they separated me from Noah…”

She looked at my son.

“I heard Simone talking.””

My heart stopped.

“What did she say?””

Grace’s eyes filled with pain.

“She said Noah wasn’t supposed to know me.””

A cold feeling moved through my body.

“What else?””

Grace hesitated.

“She said…”

Her voice broke.

“She said once everyone believed I was gone, she would finally have everything she deserved.””

I looked away.

Because hearing it out loud made it real.

The woman I married.

The woman I trusted with my child.

Had built her perfect life on someone else’s suffering.

My phone buzzed.

A message.

From Simone.

I opened it.

*We need to talk before you make a mistake.*

A second message appeared.

*You don’t know the whole story.*

I stared at the screen.

Then another message came.

This one included a photo.

My blood froze.

It was a picture of Noah.

Taken earlier that night.

But the photo wasn’t from the ballroom.

It was taken outside.

Someone had been watching him.

I looked around the hallway.

My voice became quiet.

“Who took this?””

Grace saw the picture.

Her face changed.

“She knows where we are.””

Marcus immediately looked toward the elevator.

“She followed us.””

“No,” I said.

My stomach tightened.

“She didn’t follow us.””

I looked at the photo again.

The angle was too close.

Too clear.

Whoever took it had been near Noah.

Very near.

A security guard suddenly approached.

“Mr. Carter?””

I turned.

“What?””

He looked nervous.

“There’s someone asking for you downstairs.””

I stared.

“Who?””

He hesitated.

“She said she’s Noah’s grandmother.””

Grace went pale.

“No.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

She grabbed my arm.

“Darius, don’t let her near him.””

“Why?””

Grace whispered:

“Because Evelyn Whitmore was the person who took my baby away.””

The elevator doors opened behind the guard.

A woman stepped out.

Elegant.

Older.

Calm.

Simone’s mother.

Evelyn.

She looked directly at Noah.

Then at Grace.

Her expression changed.

Not fear.

Not anger.

Something worse.

Regret.

“Grace.””

Grace stepped backward.

“You.””

Evelyn looked at me.

“Darius, I know you hate me right now.””

I said nothing.

“But if you want the truth…”

She reached into her handbag.

“And if you want to know why Simone did what she did…”

She pulled out a small envelope.

“I need to show you what happened before Noah was born.””

I stared at the envelope.

“What is it?””

Evelyn looked at Simone’s direction down the hallway.

Then whispered:

“The reason your wife was willing to destroy three lives…”

May you like

She looked at Noah.

“…was because she believed Noah was never supposed to be yours.””
