Chapter 13: The Letter That Changed Who I Blamed
I read the first line again.
Then again.
My eyes moved over the words, but my mind refused to accept them.
*If anything happens to me, make sure Darius knows I was never the person he should have feared.*
The signature at the bottom was unmistakable.
Simone Carter.
Six years ago.
Before Noah’s birth.
Before the lies.
Before everything I thought I understood collapsed.
I looked up.
Simone was staring at the letter.
Not angry.
Not defensive.
Afraid.
“Where did you get that?”” she whispered.
Lily stepped forward.
“I found it.””
Simone shook her head.
“No.””
“Yes.””
Lily’s voice trembled.
“I found it hidden inside my old hospital records.””
The room went silent.
I looked between them.
“What does this mean?””
Nobody answered.
Finally, Simone spoke.
“It means I wasn’t the beginning.””
The words surprised me.
Because for hours, I had believed Simone was the center of everything.
The person who planned it all.
The person who destroyed my family.
But now she looked less like the person holding the knife…
And more like someone who had been cut by it too.
I hated that I felt sympathy.
Because she had hurt Grace.
She had hurt Noah.
She had hurt me.
But truth was never simple.
“Explain,” I said.
Simone looked down.
“I wrote that letter because I found out something.””
“What?””
Her voice became quieter.
“Someone else was manipulating everything.””
Marcus stepped forward.
“Who?””
Simone looked at her mother.
Evelyn.
Everyone turned.
Evelyn’s face changed.
Just slightly.
But enough.
My stomach dropped.
“No.””
Evelyn closed her eyes.
“Darius…”
“No.””
I pointed at her.
“You knew.””
She didn’t deny it.
That was the answer.
Grace stepped backward.
“You knew everything?””
Evelyn looked at her.
“I knew pieces.””
“Pieces?””
Grace’s voice broke.
“My entire life was destroyed in pieces.””
Evelyn looked devastated.
“I was trying to protect my daughter.””
I shook my head.
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
The words came out bitter.
“Protect.””
I looked around the room.
“Is that what people call destroying someone’s life now?””
Nobody spoke.
Simone wiped her tears.
“My mother found out about Grace before I did.””
I looked at Evelyn.
“How?””
Evelyn answered quietly.
“Through Simone’s phone.””
Simone looked ashamed.
“I was talking about my relationship with Darius.””
Grace crossed her arms.
“And then what?””
Evelyn swallowed.
“She saw an opportunity.””
The room became cold.
“What opportunity?””
Simone looked at me.
“To remove anything that could stop me from having the life she wanted for me.””
I stared.
“Your mother did this for you?””
Simone nodded slowly.
“At first.””
The words were heavy.
“At first?””
Simone looked at the floor.
“Then I became someone I didn’t recognize.””
That was the first honest thing she had said all night.
I watched her.
The woman who had lied.
The woman who had manipulated.
The woman who had stolen years from Grace.
She wasn’t innocent.
But she wasn’t the whole story.
“What happened that night?”” I asked.
Simone looked at Lily.
Then Grace.
Then me.
“The night Noah was born…”
She took a deep breath.
“I went to the hospital because I wanted to talk to Grace.””
Grace looked shocked.
“You came to talk?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Simone’s eyes filled.
“Because I wanted her to leave.””
Grace stared.
“At least you admit it.””
Simone nodded.
“I was jealous.””
She looked at Noah.
“I was angry.””
Then she looked at me.
“But I never planned for it to become what it became.””
Marcus frowned.
“What happened?””
Simone’s hands shook.
“My mother got involved.””
Evelyn looked away.
“She told me Grace was ruining my future.””
Grace whispered:
“She said that?””
Simone nodded.
“She told me Darius would choose me if Grace disappeared.””
My jaw tightened.
“And you believed her.””
Simone closed her eyes.
“Yes.””
The honesty hurt more than another lie.
“Then what?””
Simone looked at Lily.
“Lily found out.””
Lily nodded.
“I realized what they were doing.””
“And you helped?””
Lily looked broken.
“I was scared.””
Everyone had the same excuse.
Fear.
Pain.
Desperation.
But fear didn’t erase consequences.
“What happened at the hospital?”” I asked.
Simone looked at me.
“My mother arranged everything.””
Evelyn said nothing.
“She paid someone to alter records.””
Marcus nodded.
“That matches the evidence.””
Simone continued.
“She told me Grace would leave willingly if she believed Darius abandoned her.””
Grace looked at her.
“You let me believe that?””
Simone started crying.
“Yes.””
A long silence.
Then Grace said:
“I spent six years thinking nobody wanted me.””
Simone closed her eyes.
“And I spent six years pretending I deserved what I had.””
That sentence surprised everyone.
I looked at Noah.
He was tired.
Overwhelmed.
He leaned against Grace.
I walked toward him.
“Buddy.””
He looked up.
“Can we go home?””
My heart broke.
Because he still thought home was a place.
Not knowing that home was the people standing around him.
I touched his hair.
“Yes.””
Then Lily spoke.
“Darius.””
I turned.
“There’s one more thing.””
I almost laughed.
Of course there was.
Another secret.
Another hidden truth.
She held up a small flash drive.
“I found this with the letter.””
“What is it?””
Lily looked at Simone.
“Proof.””
“Of what?””
Her voice dropped.
“Proof that Evelyn wasn’t the only person involved.””
I stared.
“What do you mean?””
Lily looked toward the ballroom.
“Someone else helped her.””
The room froze.
“Who?””
Lily handed me the flash drive.
“I don’t know.””
A pause.
“But Simone does.””
I looked at my wife.
Simone’s face went pale.
Because she recognized something.
A name.
A memory.
A person.
“Who?”” I asked again.
Simone whispered:
“The person who started all of this…”
May you like
She looked at me.
“…was someone you trusted.””
