Chapter 1: The Microphone She Was Never Supposed To Hold
“Brielle: Give me that!””
The words cut through the wedding ballroom before the music could even finish its final note.
I used to think the happiest moments of our lives were the ones we planned down to the smallest detail. The flowers. The vows.
The perfect photographs. The smiles from everyone we loved.
I thought a wedding was the one place where nobody would dare to break a heart.
I was wrong.
Because on the day Brielle Carter walked down the aisle in a designer white lace gown, with two hundred guests watching and crystal chandeliers glowing above her, the person who exposed her darkest secret was the smallest person in the room.
An eight-year-old girl holding a microphone.
Lily stood in the center of the polished marble floor, her tiny white formal dress trembling as Brielle rushed toward her. The little girl gripped the microphone with both hands, refusing to let go.
The room changed instantly.
The laughter disappeared.
The champagne glasses stopped clinking.
Every guest turned toward the scene unfolding between the bride and the child.
Brielle’s perfectly arranged smile was gone.
Her eyes were sharp, furious, and desperate.
“Brielle: Lily, give me the microphone right now,” she demanded, reaching forward.
Lily stepped backward.
“Lily: No.””
The single word echoed louder than anyone expected.
Several guests exchanged confused looks.
At the front of the ballroom, Ethan Carter stood frozen beside the wedding arch. He was still wearing his black tuxedo, his hand resting around a champagne glass he had barely touched.
For weeks, he had imagined this moment differently.
He imagined holding Brielle’s hands.
He imagined promising forever.
He never imagined watching his future wife fight an eight-year-old girl for a microphone.
“Brielle: Don’t make a scene,” Brielle whispered through clenched teeth.
Lily looked at her.
A tear rolled down the child’s cheek, but she didn’t lower the microphone.
“Lily: You told me never to tell Ethan.””
The room went completely silent.
Ethan’s expression changed.
Not dramatically.
Not immediately.
But enough.
The guests closest to him noticed.
His smile disappeared.
His shoulders tightened.
Brielle stopped moving for half a second.
Just half a second.
But everyone saw it.
“Brielle: What are you talking about?”” she snapped.
Lily looked toward Ethan.
“Lily: You said if I told him, everything would be ruined.””
A whisper moved through the crowd like a wave.
Ethan slowly walked away from the wedding arch.
“Ethan: Brielle?””
She turned toward him, suddenly softer.
“Brielle: Ethan, don’t listen to her. She’s confused.””
Lily shook her head.
“Lily: I’m not confused.””
Brielle’s face hardened again.
She pointed toward the ballroom entrance.
“Brielle: Get her out of here.””
Two security workers near the door looked uncertain.
Nobody moved.
Because Ethan was still walking forward.
Then he saw something that made him stop.
A faint red mark on Lily’s cheek.
It was small.
Almost hidden beneath the bright ballroom lights.
But Ethan saw it.
His eyes narrowed.
“Ethan: Who did that to her?””
Brielle immediately answered.
“She fell.””
The response came too quickly.
Ethan stared at her.
“Ethan: She fell?””
Brielle nodded.
“Brielle: Yes. She’s a child. Children get scared. They make up stories.””
Lily looked down at the floor.
Her fingers tightened around the microphone.
Ethan noticed.
He had known Lily since she was a toddler. She was his younger sister’s daughter, and after his sister passed away three years earlier, Lily had become one of the most important people in his life.
He knew when she was nervous.
He knew when she was lying.
And he knew when she was afraid.
This was fear.
Not imagination.
“Ethan: Lily,” he said gently, stepping closer.
“Look at me.””
The little girl slowly raised her eyes.
“Ethan: Tell me what happened.””
Brielle moved forward.
“Brielle: Ethan, this is not the time—”
But he lifted his hand.
“Ethan: I asked her a question.””
For the first time that day, Brielle looked unsure.
The champagne glass in Ethan’s hand shook slightly.
The ballroom remained silent.
Then his fingers loosened.
The glass slipped.
It crashed onto the marble floor.
The sharp sound made several guests jump.
Broken glass scattered beneath the lights.
Nobody spoke.
Ethan looked directly at Lily.
“Ethan: Tell me what happened.””
Lily swallowed hard.
She looked at Brielle.
Then back at Ethan.
“Lily: Last night I heard Brielle talking to a man upstairs.””
Brielle’s eyes widened.
“Brielle: Stop.””
Lily continued.
“He wasn’t supposed to know I was there.””
Brielle rushed forward.
“Brielle: STOP!””
But Ethan stepped between them.
The bride stopped.
Her face turned pale.
“Ethan: Why are you afraid of what she’s going to say?””
Brielle opened her mouth.
No words came out.
The guests watched her.
The woman who had spent months planning a flawless wedding was suddenly losing control of the room.
Lily held the microphone close.
Her voice was quiet.
But everyone heard her.
“Lily: I was hiding because I couldn’t sleep. I heard Brielle arguing with someone.””
Ethan’s eyes stayed on her.
“Ethan: Who was she arguing with?””
Lily looked around the ballroom.
Every face was watching.
Every person waiting.
Then she answered.
“Lily: I don’t know his name.””
Brielle exhaled, almost relieved.
But Lily wasn’t finished.
“He called her by a nickname.””
Ethan frowned.
“What nickname?””
The little girl looked at Brielle.
The bride looked terrified.
“Lily: He called her…”
A phone suddenly rang.
The sound came from the front table.
Everyone turned.
Brielle’s phone was lying beside the wedding cake.
The screen lit up.
Ethan saw the name before Brielle could reach it.
His face changed.
Because the name on the screen wasn’t a stranger.
It was someone he knew.
Someone who was supposed to be celebrating his wedding today.
“Ethan: Why is your brother calling you?””
Brielle froze.
The ballroom erupted in whispers.
Lily lowered the microphone slightly.
But then she noticed something else.
Something sitting beside the phone.
A small envelope.
One corner visible.
Her eyes widened.
“Lily: Ethan…”
He looked at her.
“Ethan: What?””
Lily pointed toward the envelope.
“That’s what the man gave Brielle last night.””
Brielle lunged toward the table.
“Brielle: Don’t touch that!””
Ethan grabbed the envelope first.
And when he turned it over, he saw a handwritten name on the front.
A name that made his blood run cold.
Because it wasn’t Brielle’s.
May you like
It wasn’t his.
It was the name of the person who had been standing beside him at the altar only minutes earlier.
