Chapter 6: The Person Who Smiled Through The Entire Betrayal
Ethan didn’t move.
He couldn’t.
The person standing near the ballroom entrance looked exactly the same as they had hours earlier.
Same elegant outfit.
Same calm expression.
Same fake smile.
But now Ethan saw something he hadn’t noticed before.
A person who had been watching.
Not celebrating.
Watching.
Every secret.
Every reaction.
Every moment when the truth came closer.
The person slowly stepped forward.
“Ethan…”
The voice made Lily tighten her grip on his hand.
Ethan felt it.
She recognized the fear before he did.
“Ethan: Stay behind me.””
Lily nodded.
The person stopped.
For a few seconds, nobody spoke.
Then Marcus whispered:
“No…”
Ethan looked at him.
“You know?””
Marcus looked pale.
“I didn’t think…”
He stopped.
Ethan’s eyes narrowed.
“You didn’t think what?””
Marcus looked toward the person.
“I didn’t think she would come here.””
The ballroom erupted with whispers again.
Ethan turned back.
She.
The word landed.
Not he.
Not they.
She.
The person who had been hiding behind everyone else was a woman.
An older woman.
Someone Ethan had trusted for years.
Someone who had hugged him after Rachel died.
Someone who had cried at the funeral.
His mother.
Claudia Carter.
“Ethan: Mom?””
The room became silent.
Claudia looked at him with tears in her eyes.
“Ethan, please.””
He almost laughed.
Everyone had said that today.
Please.
Listen.
Understand.
Wait.
But nobody had ever said:
I’m sorry.
“Ethan: You knew?””
Claudia didn’t answer.
That was enough.
Ethan felt something inside him break.
“Ethan: You knew Lily was my daughter?””
Claudia looked at Lily.
Her expression softened.
“Yes.””
Lily immediately moved closer to Ethan.
The reaction hurt him.
Because his daughter was afraid of her own grandmother.
“Ethan: How long?””
Claudia looked down.
“Since before she was born.””
A wave of shock moved through the room.
Ethan stared.
“Before she was born?””
Marcus closed his eyes.
Now everything made sense.
The people who knew.
The people who stayed silent.
The people who protected the secret.
All of them had been connected.
“Ethan: Why?””
Claudia stepped forward.
“I thought I was protecting you.””
Ethan shook his head.
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
His voice became sharper.
“Everyone keeps saying they protected me while they took away my choices.””
Claudia looked hurt.
“I was your mother.””
“Ethan: Exactly.””
The words hit her.
“You were supposed to believe in me.””
Claudia’s eyes filled.
“I did.””
“Ethan: No. You believed I couldn’t handle the truth.””
Silence.
That was the answer.
Ethan looked at Brielle.
Then Marcus.
Then Claudia.
Three people.
Three people who had decided what he was allowed to know about his own life.
“Ethan: Tell me everything.””
Claudia shook her head slightly.
“Not here.””
He looked around the ballroom.
At the guests.
At the cameras.
At the wedding that no longer existed.
“Ethan: You’re worried about where?””
His voice was cold.
“After three years of lies, you’re worried about the location?””
Claudia looked away.
Ethan stepped closer.
“No.””
Everyone became still.
“Ethan: We’re doing this here.””
Claudia looked at Lily.
“Not in front of her.””
Ethan immediately responded.
“She deserves the truth.””
The words surprised everyone.
Especially Claudia.
Because Ethan wasn’t just fighting for himself anymore.
He was fighting for Lily.
Claudia slowly nodded.
“Okay.””
She took a deep breath.
“Rachel came to me three years ago.””
Ethan listened.
“She was scared.””
“Why?””
“Because she knew someone was trying to keep her quiet.””
Ethan looked at Brielle.
But Claudia shook her head.
“Not Brielle.””
Everyone looked surprised.
Brielle included.
Ethan frowned.
“Then who?””
Claudia looked at Marcus.
“Marcus knew part of it.””
Marcus nodded.
“I suspected.””
Claudia continued.
“Rachel found out that Lily’s birth records had been changed.””
Ethan froze.
“What?””
“She discovered someone had altered documents to make it look like Ethan wasn’t the father.””
The room went silent.
Ethan looked at Lily.
“Why?””
Claudia’s expression became painful.
“Because someone wanted another person to have control over Lily.””
Marcus stepped forward.
“Who?””
Claudia hesitated.
And that hesitation terrified Ethan.
“Mom.””
She looked at him.
“Say the name.””
Claudia’s eyes filled.
“I can’t.””
Ethan stared.
“You still can’t?””
His voice broke.
“After everything?””
Claudia whispered:
“I’m scared.””
The word changed everything.
Because Claudia Carter was many things.
Strict.
Proud.
Difficult.
But Ethan had never seen her afraid.
Not even when Rachel was dying.
“Ethan: Who are you afraid of?””
Before Claudia could answer, Brielle spoke.
“I know.””
Everyone turned.
Brielle looked exhausted.
Like she had finally accepted that the walls around her were gone.
“I know who it is.””
Ethan looked at her.
“Then say it.””
Brielle swallowed.
“It was my father.””
The room went silent.
Ethan frowned.
“Your father?””
Brielle nodded.
“He was the one who started all of this.””
Marcus looked shocked.
“No.””
Brielle looked at him.
“Yes.””
Ethan stared.
“Why?””
She closed her eyes.
“Because he wanted me to marry you.””
The answer made no sense.
“Why would he care?””
Brielle looked at Ethan.
“Because your family’s company.””
Ethan’s face changed.
The company.
The one his grandfather built.
The one his father left him.
The one he had spent years managing.
Brielle continued.
“Your father’s will had a condition.””
Ethan remembered.
A condition nobody ever talked about.
The company would remain controlled by the family until Ethan had a stable family of his own.
“Ethan: No.””
Brielle nodded.
“Yes.””
Marcus looked at Ethan.
“Someone wanted access to your inheritance.””
Ethan looked sick.
“So this was never about love.””
Brielle cried.
“At first…”
She stopped.
The words were enough.
At first.
Ethan looked away.
He couldn’t even feel anger anymore.
Only exhaustion.
“Ethan: What did your father do?””
Brielle hesitated.
“He threatened Rachel.””
Lily suddenly covered her ears.
Ethan noticed.
He knelt beside her.
“It’s okay.””
But Lily shook her head.
“No.””
Her eyes were filled with fear.
“I remember him.””
Everyone froze.
Ethan looked at her.
“Who?””
Lily looked toward Claudia.
Then Brielle.
Then whispered:
“The man who came to our house.””
Marcus stepped forward.
“Lily…”
“No.””
The little girl shook her head.
“He had a ring.””
Ethan frowned.
“What kind of ring?””
Lily closed her eyes.
“A gold ring.””
She opened them.
“With a lion.””
Brielle’s face went white.
Marcus looked at her.
“Brielle?””
She whispered:
“My father’s ring.””
The ballroom went silent.
Ethan stood.
“Your father was at Rachel’s house?””
Brielle nodded slowly.
“Yes.””
“Ethan: The night she died?””
Brielle couldn’t speak.
She didn’t need to.
The answer was clear.
Ethan looked at Claudia.
“Mom.””
She looked away.
And that hurt more than anything.
Because silence from strangers was expected.
Silence from family was betrayal.
Then Ethan’s phone rang.
Everyone looked.
The screen showed an unknown number.
He answered.
At first, there was only breathing.
Then a voice.
An old voice.
A familiar voice.
“Ethan Carter.””
His blood went cold.
Because the voice belonged to someone who was supposed to be dead.
“Ethan: Who is this?””
A pause.
Then:
“You want to know who your daughter’s father is?””
Ethan looked at Lily.
The caller continued.
“Then you should ask who really died that night.””
The line went silent.
May you like
And on the other end of the call…
someone started laughing.
