Chapter 4: The Father Who Never Knew He Was A Father
For three years, Ethan had believed he was Lily’s uncle.
Three years of birthday cakes.
Three years of bedtime stories.
Three years of carrying her on his shoulders when she was tired.
Three years of telling everyone the same thing.
“She’s my sister’s daughter.””
Now, standing in the middle of a wedding ballroom surrounded by hundreds of people, he realized the sentence had never been completely true.
Because Lily wasn’t his sister’s child.
She was his.
The word kept repeating inside his head.
Daughter.
Not niece.
Daughter.
Ethan looked at Lily.
The little girl who had spent the entire day trying to tell him the truth.
The little girl who had been brave while every adult around her tried to silence her.
His daughter.
But instead of feeling only happiness, Ethan felt something else.
Pain.
Because he suddenly understood how much time he had lost.
How many moments had passed without him knowing what he was.
How many times Lily had looked at him and wanted to say something she couldn’t.
“Ethan: Lily…”
His voice cracked.
The little girl wiped her tears quickly.
Like she was afraid crying would make everything worse.
“Lily: I’m sorry.””
Those two words hurt him more than anything else.
Ethan immediately stepped forward.
“No.””
He dropped to his knees in front of her.
“You don’t apologize.””
The microphone slipped from her hand and fell onto the floor.
A guest quickly picked it up, but nobody paid attention.
The entire room watched Ethan and Lily.
“Ethan: Look at me.””
Slowly, she did.
“Ethan: How long have you known?””
Lily’s eyes moved toward Brielle.
Then Marcus.
Then back to Ethan.
“I knew something was different.””
Her voice was barely audible.
“Lily: But I didn’t know what.””
Ethan frowned.
“What do you mean?””
Lily swallowed.
“Lily: When I asked Grandma why everyone called you my uncle, she told me to stop asking questions.””
Ethan’s heart tightened.
“Lily: And when I asked Brielle…”
She stopped.
Ethan looked up.
“Ethan: What did Brielle say?””
The little girl hesitated.
Then she whispered:
“She said some truths hurt people.””
Every eye turned toward Brielle.
The bride stood near the wedding arch.
Her makeup was still perfect.
Her dress was still flawless.
But the woman wearing them looked completely broken.
“Ethan: You told an eight-year-old girl to hide her own identity.””
Brielle shook her head.
“No.””
“Ethan: Then explain it.””
She wiped away a tear.
“I was trying to protect you.””
Ethan stood slowly.
“Protect me from what?””
Brielle looked at him.
“From losing everything.””
A bitter laugh escaped him.
“You think I didn’t lose everything today?””
The words hit her.
For the first time, Brielle looked like she understood she had gone too far.
“Brielle: Ethan, listen to me.””
“No.””
His voice was firm.
“Ethan: I spent three years thinking I lost my sister and became an uncle. I spent three years watching this little girl grow up without knowing she was my child.””
He pointed toward Lily.
“Ethan: And you knew.””
Brielle looked down.
That was enough.
The silence was an answer.
Marcus stepped closer.
“Ethan, there’s more.””
Ethan turned.
He looked exhausted.
“Of course there is.””
Marcus took a deep breath.
“Rachel wanted to tell you.””
Ethan froze.
“Marcus: Before she died, she was planning to tell you everything.””
“Everything about what?””
Marcus looked at Brielle.
“About the night Lily was born.””
The room became quiet again.
Ethan looked confused.
“Lily was born three years before Rachel died.””
Marcus nodded.
“Yes.””
“Ethan: So why didn’t Rachel tell me?””
Marcus hesitated.
And that hesitation made Ethan angry.
“Ethan: Why?””
Marcus looked down.
“Because someone convinced her not to.””
Ethan looked toward Brielle.
Her face changed.
“Ethan: Who?””
Nobody answered.
Then Lily spoke.
“Brielle.””
The entire room turned.
The child’s voice shook.
But she continued.
“Lily: Brielle told my mom she would ruin Ethan’s life if she told him.””
Brielle stepped backward.
“No.””
Lily looked at her.
“You did.””
“Brielle: Lily, you don’t understand.””
“Lily: I heard you.””
The little girl’s courage surprised everyone.
“I was hiding under the stairs.””
Ethan looked at her.
“Ethan: Why were you hiding?””
Lily looked down.
“Because I heard you and Brielle arguing.””
“When?””
“Two months ago.””
Ethan frowned.
Two months ago.
That was when he had proposed to Brielle.
The happiest time of his life.
Or what he thought was.
Lily continued.
“She said she had worked too hard to lose everything now.””
Marcus closed his eyes.
Ethan stared at Brielle.
“Worked too hard?””
Brielle said nothing.
“Ethan: What does that mean?””
Her silence stretched.
Then finally, she whispered:
“I loved you.””
The answer sounded empty.
Ethan shook his head.
“No. Don’t say that.””
Her eyes filled.
“Brielle: I did.””
“Ethan: Love doesn’t hide children from their fathers.””
The words landed.
Brielle looked away.
A few guests quietly left the ballroom.
Others remained, unable to look away.
The wedding photographer lowered his camera.
Even he knew this wasn’t a moment to capture.
Marcus walked closer.
“There’s something you need to hear.””
Ethan looked at him.
“Another secret?””
Marcus nodded.
“I’m sorry.””
Ethan’s expression hardened.
“Every time someone says that today, another truth comes out.””
Marcus accepted the anger.
“You deserve to hate me.””
“Ethan: Why?””
Marcus took a deep breath.
“Because I knew.””
The confession shocked everyone.
Ethan stared.
“Knew what?””
Marcus looked at Lily.
“Knew she was your daughter.””
Ethan’s face went blank.
“You knew?””
Marcus nodded.
“Rachel told me.””
The room spun.
“Ethan: When?””
“The night before she died.””
Ethan stepped back.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Marcus looked destroyed.
“Because Rachel asked me not to.””
“Ethan: Why?””
Marcus’s voice dropped.
“Because she was afraid.””
“Afraid of what?””
Marcus looked at Brielle.
And this time, Brielle didn’t deny it.
“Ethan…”
Her voice trembled.
“Rachel discovered something.””
Ethan stared.
“What?””
Brielle closed her eyes.
Like saying it aloud would destroy her.
“Rachel discovered why Marcus was really at her house that night.””
Ethan looked at Marcus.
The room went silent.
“Ethan: Why?””
Marcus didn’t answer immediately.
Then he said:
“Because I wasn’t there to visit Rachel.””
A pause.
“I was there because I found proof that Brielle had been lying to both of you.””
Brielle’s face went pale.
Ethan looked between them.
His entire understanding of the last three years was collapsing.
“Ethan: Proof of what?””
Marcus reached into his pocket.
This time, he pulled out a small black folder.
“I kept this because I thought the truth would destroy everyone.””
He handed it to Ethan.
Ethan opened it.
Inside were documents.
Medical records.
Messages.
A photograph.
And one page that made him stop.
His eyes scanned the words.
Then he looked up slowly.
“Brielle…”
She began crying.
“Ethan, please.””
But he held up the paper.
His voice was quiet.
“Why does this say Rachel wasn’t the only person who was pregnant?””
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
Then Ethan looked at Brielle.
The woman he was supposed to marry.
The woman standing in front of him in a wedding dress.
“Who was the other baby?””
Brielle covered her mouth.
And for the first time all day…
she looked terrified.
Because Ethan had finally found the secret she had spent three years hiding.
But he still didn’t know the worst part.
May you like
The baby mentioned in those records wasn’t just connected to Brielle.
It was connected to him.
