Chapter 3: The Secret The Child Was Forced To Carry
The words hung in the air like smoke.
Nobody moved.
Nobody even breathed.
“The truth about who Lily’s father really is.””
Ethan stared at Marcus as if he had spoken a language he couldn’t understand.
Then his eyes slowly moved toward Lily.
The little girl stood frozen.
Her white dress was slightly wrinkled from the chaos. Her hair, carefully styled that morning, had loose strands falling around her face.
She looked smaller than ever.
Not like someone who had destroyed a wedding.
Like someone who had been carrying a secret far too heavy for her.
“Ethan: What did you just say?””
Marcus stepped farther into the ballroom.
Every guest watched him.
The man who had once been Ethan’s closest friend.
The man who had toasted their future.
The man who now looked like he was walking toward his own confession.
“Marcus: Ethan, listen to me.””
Ethan’s jaw tightened.
“No.””
The single word stopped Marcus.
“Ethan: You don’t get to walk in here after ruining my wedding and tell me to listen.””
Marcus looked down.
For the first time, he looked ashamed.
“Marcus: I know how this looks.””
Ethan laughed once.
But there was no humor in it.
“You think?””
Brielle stepped forward.
“Brielle: Marcus, don’t.””
Everyone turned toward her.
The fear in her voice was obvious.
Ethan noticed.
“Ethan: Why are you telling him not to talk?””
Brielle didn’t answer.
“Ethan: Why?””
Her lips parted.
Nothing came out.
Lily gripped the microphone tighter.
“Lily: Because she doesn’t want you to know.””
Ethan looked at her.
“Ethan: Know what?””
The little girl’s eyes filled with tears.
“Lily: That my mom wasn’t telling the truth.””
A strange silence followed.
Ethan’s expression changed.
Lily’s mother.
His sister.
The woman who had died three years earlier.
The woman whose memory he protected more than anything.
“Ethan: Lily…”
She looked up at him.
“Lily: My mom said you were the only person she trusted.””
The words hit him.
Hard.
Ethan remembered his sister, Rachel.
He remembered the hospital room.
The machines.
The way she had grabbed his hand and begged him to take care of Lily.
“You’re the only one I trust,” she had whispered.
At the time, he thought she meant protecting Lily.
He never imagined she was hiding something.
“Ethan: What does your mom have to do with Brielle and Marcus?””
Lily looked toward the floor.
“Lily: I don’t know everything.””
Brielle immediately spoke.
“Brielle: Exactly.””
Ethan looked at her.
“Brielle: She doesn’t know everything. She’s confused. She heard things.
She saw things. She’s mixing them together.””
Lily shook her head.
“No.””
Her voice was quiet.
But firm.
“Lily: I remember.””
That made Brielle stop.
Ethan noticed.
He noticed everything now.
Every pause.
Every glance.
Every hesitation.
“Ethan: Lily, tell me what you remember.””
The little girl looked at Marcus.
Marcus closed his eyes.
Like he already knew.
“Lily: The night before my mom died…”
Ethan froze.
The ballroom disappeared around him.
The music.
The guests.
The wedding decorations.
Everything faded.
“Lily: She was crying.””
Ethan swallowed.
“Lily: She told me something bad happened. She told me not to tell anyone because she was scared.””
Brielle’s face became pale.
“Ethan: What happened?””
Lily’s voice became smaller.
“She said Marcus came to our house.””
A wave of whispers spread through the ballroom.
Marcus looked away.
Ethan stared at him.
“Ethan: You went to Rachel’s house?””
Marcus didn’t respond.
“Ethan: Answer me.””
Marcus finally nodded.
“Yes.””
Ethan stepped toward him.
“Why?””
Marcus looked broken.
“Marcus: Because Rachel called me.””
“Ethan: Why would she call you?””
Marcus looked at Brielle.
And that was when Ethan understood.
The connection.
The reason everyone kept looking at each other.
The reason Brielle wanted Lily silent.
“Ethan: What does Brielle have to do with this?””
Marcus didn’t speak.
Brielle did.
“Nothing.””
Too fast.
Too desperate.
Ethan turned.
“Ethan: Nobody believes you right now.””
Her eyes flashed with anger.
“Brielle: After everything I’ve done for you?””
The sentence surprised him.
Not because of what she said.
Because of how she said it.
Like he owed her.
Like love was a debt.
Ethan stared at her.
“Ethan: What does that mean?””
Brielle looked around the room.
She lowered her voice.
“Brielle: You have no idea what I sacrificed.””
Lily suddenly whispered.
“She said that before.””
Ethan looked down.
“Ethan: What?””
Lily looked terrified.
“Lily: Last night. She told Marcus she sacrificed everything.””
Marcus closed his eyes.
“Marcus: Lily, you shouldn’t have heard that.””
“Lily: But I did.””
Ethan looked at Marcus.
“What were you two talking about?””
Marcus didn’t answer.
Ethan stepped closer.
“What were you talking about?””
Finally, Marcus spoke.
“We were talking about the truth.””
“Ethan: Which truth?””
Marcus looked directly at him.
“The truth that Brielle has been hiding for three years.””
The entire room went silent.
Ethan felt something cold move through him.
Three years.
Exactly how long since Rachel died.
“Ethan: Explain.””
Brielle shook her head.
“No.””
Ethan looked at her.
“Ethan: You don’t get to decide that anymore.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
But this time, Ethan didn’t move toward her.
Marcus reached into his jacket pocket.
He pulled out his phone.
“Marcus: I recorded the conversation.””
Brielle’s face changed.
“No.””
It was barely a whisper.
Marcus looked at Ethan.
“I didn’t want to use it.””
“Ethan: But you kept it.””
Marcus nodded.
“Because I knew one day you would need to hear it.””
Brielle stepped forward.
“Marcus, please.””
The desperation in her voice shocked everyone.
Marcus looked at her.
“Brielle, you had three years to tell him.””
Ethan’s heartbeat grew louder.
He felt like he was standing at the edge of something.
Something that would change everything.
Marcus unlocked his phone.
The ballroom remained silent.
Then a voice came through the speakers.
Brielle’s voice.
From the recording.
“I can’t let Ethan find out.””
A chill went through Ethan.
The recording continued.
Marcus’s voice followed.
“You can’t keep hiding this forever.””
Brielle answered.
“I have no choice.””
A pause.
Then Marcus asked:
“What about Lily?””
Ethan looked at the child.
The recording continued.
“She’s just a child. She won’t understand.””
Ethan’s face hardened.
But then came Brielle’s next words.
Words that made everyone gasp.
“She doesn’t even know Ethan isn’t her uncle.””
The phone nearly slipped from Marcus’s hand.
Ethan stared.
The entire world seemed to stop.
“What did she just say?””
Nobody answered.
The recording continued.
Marcus’s voice sounded frightened.
“Brielle, this is too far.””
Then Brielle spoke.
“She can never know.””
Ethan looked at Lily.
The little girl was crying silently.
“Ethan: Lily…”
She covered her mouth.
Like she was afraid of what would happen next.
The recording ended.
Nobody spoke.
Finally, Ethan turned toward Marcus.
His voice was barely controlled.
“Ethan: Say it.””
Marcus looked down.
“Ethan: Say what you know.””
Marcus took a deep breath.
Then he said:
“Ethan…”
His eyes moved toward Lily.
“Lily isn’t your niece.””
Ethan felt the air leave his lungs.
“She’s your daughter.””
The ballroom erupted.
Someone dropped a glass.
Someone screamed.
But Ethan heard only one thing.
The tiny sound of Lily crying.
And then, from somewhere behind him, Brielle whispered the sentence that made his blood run cold.
“I was trying to protect you from the truth…”
Ethan slowly turned.
“Brielle: Because Rachel wasn’t the only one who knew.””
A pause.
“Brielle: I knew too.””
May you like
And then Lily looked at Ethan and said the words that broke his heart.
“Daddy…”
