Chapter 2: The Name Hidden Inside The Envelope

The ballroom felt smaller after Ethan picked up the envelope.

A room built for celebration had transformed into a courtroom without a judge.

The crystal chandeliers still glittered above them. The flowers still surrounded the wedding arch. The untouched wedding cake still stood perfectly decorated beside the table.

But nobody was looking at any of that anymore.

Everyone was looking at Ethan.

And everyone was looking at Brielle.

She stood frozen in her white gown, one hand pressed against her chest as if she could physically hold the truth inside.

“Ethan: Tell me why this envelope has your brother’s name written on it.””

His voice was calm.

Too calm.

Brielle knew that tone.

It was the tone Ethan used when he was no longer asking because he wanted an explanation.

He was asking because he already knew something was wrong.

“Brielle: Ethan, please. Not here.””

Several guests shifted uncomfortably.

Some looked away.

Others leaned closer, hungry for answers.

The same people who had come to witness a wedding were now witnessing something much darker.

Lily stood near Ethan’s side, still holding the microphone.

Her small fingers were wrapped around it so tightly that her knuckles had turned pale.

Ethan noticed.

He lowered himself slightly so he was closer to her height.

“Ethan: Lily, are you okay?””

She nodded.

But her eyes said something different.

“No,” she whispered.

Ethan’s expression softened.

“Ethan: Did someone hurt you?””

Before Lily could answer, Brielle stepped forward.

“Brielle: Ethan, you’re making this into something it’s not.””

He stood back up.

“Ethan: Then explain it.””

She looked around the room.

At the guests.

At the cameras.

At the people recording on their phones.

Her face tightened.

“Brielle: Not in front of everyone.””

Ethan looked down at the envelope in his hand.

“Ethan: You didn’t care about making a scene when you tried to take the microphone from an eight-year-old.””

A murmur passed through the crowd.

Brielle’s jaw clenched.

“That’s unfair.””

“Ethan: Is it?””

For a moment, neither of them spoke.

Then Lily quietly said something.

“Lily: She told me nobody would believe me.””

The words hit harder than shouting.

Ethan turned toward her.

“Ethan: When did she say that?””

Lily looked at the floor.

“Lily: Last night.””

Brielle immediately interrupted.

“Brielle: She misunderstood.””

Ethan looked at her.

“Ethan: Stop saying that.””

The room went silent again.

Brielle stared at him.

It was the first time all day that Ethan had spoken to her like a stranger.

Not like the woman he loved.

Not like the woman he was supposed to marry.

Like someone he didn’t recognize.

“Ethan: Open the envelope.””

Brielle’s eyes widened.

“No.””

The answer came instantly.

And that was enough.

Ethan slowly turned the envelope over in his hand.

“Ethan: Why?””

She didn’t respond.

“Ethan: Why don’t you want me to open something with your brother’s name on it?””

Brielle looked toward the entrance.

For a second, Ethan thought she was going to run.

Then she did something unexpected.

She smiled.

It wasn’t a happy smile.

It was the kind of smile people make when they think they have found a way out.

“Brielle: Fine.””

She lifted her chin.

“Brielle: Open it.””

A few guests gasped.

Ethan frowned.

He hadn’t expected her to agree.

Slowly, he tore the envelope open.

Inside was a folded piece of paper.

And a photograph.

He looked at the photograph first.

Then he stopped breathing.

The color drained from his face.

Lily saw it.

“Lily: What is it?””

Ethan didn’t answer.

His eyes stayed fixed on the picture.

It showed Brielle.

Standing beside a man.

A man Ethan knew.

A man who had helped him choose the wedding venue.

A man who had given a speech at the rehearsal dinner the night before.

His best friend.

Marcus.

The crowd immediately noticed Ethan’s reaction.

“Guest: Ethan?””

“Guest: What’s wrong?””

But Ethan couldn’t hear them.

Not clearly.

His mind was replaying every moment from the past year.

Every time Marcus had defended Brielle.

Every time Marcus had told him he was lucky.

Every time Marcus had encouraged him to propose.

A sick feeling grew inside him.

“Ethan: When was this taken?””

Brielle didn’t answer.

“Ethan: Brielle.””

She swallowed.

“Brielle: It’s not what you think.””

The oldest sentence in the world.

The sentence people said when it was exactly what everyone thought.

Ethan looked at the paper.

His eyes moved across the words.

Then his face changed again.

“What is this?””

Brielle said nothing.

“Ethan: What is this?””

His voice rose.

The guests became completely still.

Lily stepped closer.

“Ethan: It says Marcus knew about the wedding before I did.””

Brielle’s eyes filled with tears.

But Ethan couldn’t tell if they were real.

“Ethan: Why?””

She looked at him.

“Brielle: Because I was scared.””

The answer surprised him.

“Ethan: Scared of what?””

Brielle looked around.

Her eyes landed on Lily.

And something cold appeared in her expression.

“Brielle: Of her.””

Everyone noticed.

Ethan’s face hardened.

“Ethan: Don’t.””

“Brielle: You don’t understand.””

“Ethan: Then explain.””

Brielle took a shaky breath.

“Brielle: Lily has been trying to destroy us.””

A wave of disbelief moved through the room.

Ethan stared at her.

“She’s eight years old.””

Brielle shook her head.

“You think that means she can’t hurt people?””

Lily stepped backward.

The microphone slipped slightly in her hands.

Ethan immediately looked at her.

“Ethan: Lily, what is she talking about?””

The girl didn’t answer.

Her eyes filled with tears.

And that scared him more than anything.

Because Lily wasn’t angry.

She wasn’t defensive.

She looked guilty.

Like she was carrying a secret too heavy for someone her age.

“Ethan: Lily?””

The little girl whispered.

“I didn’t want to tell you.””

“Ethan: Tell me what?””

She looked toward Brielle.

Then at the photograph.

Then back at Ethan.

“Lily: I saw Marcus leave Brielle’s room.””

The ballroom went silent.

Again.

Brielle closed her eyes.

Ethan looked at the photograph.

Then at Lily.

“Ethan: When?””

“Lily: Last night.””

His stomach tightened.

“Ethan: What time?””

“Lily: After midnight.””

The wedding guests began whispering.

Brielle suddenly looked less angry.

More afraid.

Ethan noticed.

“Ethan: You knew.””

She didn’t answer.

“Ethan: You knew Marcus was there.””

Brielle looked down.

“Brielle: Yes.””

The confession landed like a blow.

Ethan stepped back.

“Ethan: And you still married me today?””

Her eyes filled.

“Brielle: I was going to tell you.””

“When?””

She couldn’t answer.

“When were you going to tell me?””

The silence answered for her.

Ethan turned away.

For a moment, nobody knew what would happen next.

Then Lily spoke again.

“Ethan.””

He looked at her.

The little girl held the microphone close.

“There’s more.””

Brielle’s head snapped up.

“No.””

Lily flinched.

Ethan immediately moved between them.

“Ethan: Let her speak.””

Brielle shook her head.

“Ethan, you don’t understand what you’re doing.””

“Ethan: I understand enough.””

Lily looked at the floor.

“Lily: The man upstairs didn’t just talk about Marcus.””

Ethan’s heart started beating faster.

“What else did he talk about?””

The little girl hesitated.

Then she whispered:

“He said the wedding had to happen before you discovered the truth.””

Ethan stared at her.

“What truth?””

Lily’s eyes moved toward Brielle.

The bride looked terrified now.

Not angry.

Not defensive.

Terrified.

“Lily: He said if Ethan found out that Brielle…”

A sudden crash interrupted her.

Everyone turned.

A man had entered the ballroom.

The guests near the entrance stepped aside.

Ethan recognized him instantly.

Marcus.

Still wearing his wedding suit.

Still holding a phone in his hand.

And on his face was the expression of someone who knew the secret was already exposed.

“Marcus: Ethan.””

Nobody moved.

Marcus looked at Lily.

Then at Brielle.

Then back at Ethan.

“Marcus: Before she tells you the rest…”

He stopped.

Ethan stared at him.

“Ethan: The rest of what?””

Marcus swallowed.

May you like

And then he said the one sentence that changed everything.

“Marcus: The truth about who Lily’s father really is.””
