Chapter 7: The Voice From The Night Rachel Died

The laughter on the phone stopped.

But Ethan still held the device against his ear.

He couldn’t move.

He couldn’t speak.

Because the voice he had just heard belonged to a person who had been buried three years ago.

A person everyone believed was gone.

A person whose death had changed the entire Carter family forever.

“Ethan: Who is this?””

The only response was silence.

Then the voice returned.

Older.

Calmer.

Almost amused.

“Unknown Caller: You always were the one who asked too many questions.””

Ethan’s heart raced.

He looked around the ballroom.

Everyone was watching him.

Brielle.

Marcus.

Claudia.

Lily.

All of them waiting for answers he didn’t have.

“Ethan: Tell me your name.””

A quiet laugh.

“Unknown Caller: You already know.””

The call ended.

Ethan lowered the phone slowly.

Nobody spoke.

Then Marcus stepped forward.

“Who was it?””

Ethan looked at him.

His face was pale.

“It sounded like…”

He stopped.

He couldn’t say it.

He didn’t want to say it.

But Claudia already knew.

Her expression changed instantly.

“No.””

Everyone turned toward her.

Ethan stared.

“Mom?””

Claudia shook her head.

“No. That’s impossible.””

“Ethan: You know who it was.””

Her eyes filled with fear.

And that fear confirmed everything.

“Mom.””

Claudia looked down.

“It was Richard.””

The name moved through the ballroom.

Brielle froze.

Marcus whispered:

“Her father.””

Ethan felt his stomach drop.

Richard Hale.

Brielle’s father.

The man everyone thought had died after a heart attack two years earlier.

The man who had never appeared at the wedding.

The man who had supposedly never been involved in Rachel’s death.

Except now Ethan knew that was a lie too.

“Ethan: He’s alive?””

Nobody answered.

“Ethan: Is he alive?””

Brielle closed her eyes.

“Yes.””

The word hit harder than anything else.

Ethan looked at her.

“You knew?””

She started crying.

“I thought he was dead.””

“But he isn’t.””

“No.””

Her voice cracked.

“He disappeared.””

Ethan looked around.

“So everyone knew something except me.””

No one corrected him.

Because it was true.

He turned away.

For years, he had believed he was protecting his family.

But the entire time, his family had been protecting secrets from him.

Lily tugged his sleeve.

“Daddy?””

Ethan immediately looked down.

She looked terrified.

“Are we leaving?””

The question broke something inside him.

Not because she wanted to leave.

Because she had learned that adults could turn any place into danger.

He crouched beside her.

“Yes.””

She looked relieved.

“But first,” Ethan said softly, “we’re finding the truth.””

Lily nodded.

For the first time that day, Ethan saw something other than fear in her eyes.

Trust.

He stood.

“Marcus.””

Marcus looked at him.

“I need everything you know.””

Marcus nodded.

“You’re going to hate me.””

“I already do.””

The honesty hurt.

But Marcus accepted it.

“I found out about Richard two years ago.””

Ethan frowned.

“Two years?””

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Marcus looked ashamed.

“Because Richard threatened me.””

The room went silent.

Ethan stared.

“What did he threaten?””

Marcus took a deep breath.

“My family.””

A pause.

“He said if I told you, he would destroy everyone connected to me.””

Ethan looked at Claudia.

“And you?””

She looked broken.

“Richard threatened Rachel before she died.””

Ethan froze.

“What did he want?””

Claudia hesitated.

“Control.””

The answer was simple.

And terrifying.

“He knew about Lily. He knew you were the father. He knew the company would eventually belong to your child.””

Ethan looked at Brielle.

“And that’s why he wanted Brielle to marry me.””

Brielle nodded.

“My father thought if I married you, he could control your life.””

Ethan laughed quietly.

A painful sound.

“And you agreed?””

Brielle looked down.

“At first.””

Everyone waited.

She wiped her tears.

“I was young. I was angry. I thought I deserved a better life.””

Ethan stared at her.

“And then?””

Brielle looked at Lily.

“Then I realized I was helping him hurt an innocent child.””

Lily looked away.

Ethan noticed.

“Did you ever try to tell Rachel?””

Brielle closed her eyes.

“Yes.””

Marcus looked surprised.

“You did?””

Brielle nodded.

“I tried.””

“Then what happened?””

Her voice became quiet.

“My father found out.””

The ballroom went still.

Ethan’s mind returned to Rachel’s final days.

The calls she never answered.

The strange messages.

The way she suddenly seemed afraid of everyone.

“Ethan: What did he do?””

Brielle didn’t answer.

Marcus did.

“He went to Rachel’s house.””

Lily covered her ears.

Ethan immediately turned.

“Lily?””

She shook her head.

“I remember.””

He knelt.

“You don’t have to.””

“Yes, I do.””

The little girl’s voice was shaking.

“But I remember because my mom told me something.””

Ethan waited.

“She told me if anything happened, I should find you.””

His eyes filled.

“She knew.””

Lily nodded.

“She knew she might not get another chance.””

Ethan looked down.

His sister had spent her final moments trying to protect a child.

His child.

And he hadn’t known.

A sound came from the entrance.

Everyone turned.

A security guard walked in holding a small package.

“Mr. Carter?””

Ethan stood.

“Yes?””

“This was delivered for you.””

He looked confused.

“By who?””

The guard shook his head.

“They didn’t say.””

Ethan stared at the package.

Nobody moved.

Something about it felt wrong.

Marcus stepped closer.

“Don’t open it.””

Ethan looked at him.

“Why?””

“Because Richard doesn’t send gifts.””

Slowly, Ethan picked it up.

It was small.

Brown paper.

No name.

No return address.

Only one word written across the front.

*LILY.*

The little girl immediately stepped back.

Ethan noticed.

“What is it?””

Nobody knew.

But everyone was afraid.

Ethan carefully opened the package.

Inside was a small wooden box.

He lifted the lid.

And his breath stopped.

Inside was a necklace.

A necklace Ethan recognized.

Because it had belonged to Rachel.

The one she wore every day.

The one she was buried wearing.

Except now it was sitting inside this box.

With a note underneath.

Ethan picked it up.

His hands shook.

The handwriting was unfamiliar.

But the message was clear.

*I told you she was never really gone.*

Ethan looked at Claudia.

Her face had turned white.

“Mom?””

She whispered:

“No…”

“What?””

She pointed at the necklace.

“That was impossible.””

“Why?””

Claudia looked at Ethan.

Because for the first time, she wasn’t hiding anything.

She was terrified.

“Because I buried that necklace with Rachel.””

Nobody spoke.

Then Ethan’s phone rang again.

Same unknown number.

This time, he answered immediately.

“Ethan: Where is Rachel?””

A pause.

Then the voice replied.

“Closer than you think.””

Ethan’s blood ran cold.

The caller continued:

“You have spent three years mourning the wrong person.””

The ballroom went silent.

Lily grabbed Ethan’s hand.

May you like

And then the voice said the one thing that changed everything.

“Your sister is alive.””
