Chapter 2: The Woman Who Was Supposed to Be Gone

The hospital smelled exactly like Julian remembered.

Cold air.

Cleaning chemicals.

Quiet footsteps moving through long white hallways.

He hated hospitals.

They always made him feel like something important was about to disappear.

But this time, something was waiting for him.

Julian walked through the automatic doors still wearing his tuxedo.

People stared.

A man dressed for a wedding standing in a hospital lobby looked like someone who had stepped into the wrong story.

Maybe he had.

A nurse looked up from the front desk.

“Can I help you?””

“I’m looking for Elena Whitmore.””

The nurse typed on her computer.

A strange look crossed her face.

“Room 418.””

Julian nodded.

His feet moved before his mind could catch up.

Every step toward the elevator felt heavier.

He had imagined seeing Elena again a thousand different ways.

He imagined anger.

He imagined tears.

He imagined questions.

He never imagined this.

A baby.

A secret.

A wedding interrupted by a voice from the past.

When the elevator doors opened on the fourth floor, he saw her immediately.

Elena sat near the hospital room window, holding a newborn wrapped in a white blanket.

She looked nothing like the woman he remembered.

She was thinner.

Paler.

Her long brown hair was messy, pulled loosely behind her head.

There were dark circles beneath her eyes, and exhaustion covered her face.

But her eyes were the same.

The same eyes that had once looked at him like he was home.

For several seconds, neither of them spoke.

Then Elena looked at him and started crying.

Not loudly.

Not dramatically.

Just silent tears sliding down her face.

Julian stood frozen in the doorway.

“You’re alive.””

The words sounded foolish the moment he said them.

Elena looked down.

“I never wanted you to think I wasn’t.””

“But you disappeared.””

“I know.””

“You let me believe you were gone.””

“I know.””

Her voice broke.

“I didn’t have a choice.””

Julian stepped into the room.

“Everybody has a choice.””

The baby moved slightly in her arms.

Julian stopped.

The anger he had carried with him suddenly collided with something else.

Fear.

Wonder.

Confusion.

He stared at the tiny face hidden beneath the blanket.

“Elena…”

She looked at him.

“This is Noah.””

Julian’s breathing changed.

“Noah?””

She nodded.

“Our son.””

The room became silent.

The words felt impossible.

A son.

He had a son.

A child he had never known existed.

A baby who had entered the world while Julian was standing in a church preparing to marry another woman.

His hand moved slightly.

Then stopped.

“Is he mine?””

Elena looked hurt.

Not angry.

Hurt.

“Yes.””

Julian looked away.

He hated himself for asking.

But he needed the answer.

“I’m sorry.””

Elena wiped her cheek.

“I know.””

“You should have told me.””

“I tried.””

That made him look back.

“What?””

Her fingers tightened around the blanket.

“Julian, I tried to contact you.””

“When?””

“After I found out I was pregnant.””

He shook his head.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“That’s not possible.””

“It is.””

Her voice became firmer.

“I called you. I sent messages. I went to your apartment.””

Julian felt a chill move through him.

Because he remembered.

The unanswered messages.

The blocked number.

The strange silence.

At the time, he thought Elena had stopped trying.

But what if she hadn’t?

“What happened?”” he asked.

Elena looked toward the hospital door.

Then back at him.

“Charlotte happened.””

Julian froze.

The name sounded different now.

Dangerous.

“What does Charlotte have to do with this?””

Elena looked down at Noah.

“She knew about the baby.””

Julian’s jaw tightened.

“How?””

“She found out before you did.””

The room seemed smaller.

“She told me you had moved on.””

Julian stared at her.

“She told me you were happy. She told me you didn’t want to hear from me.””

“That’s a lie.””

“I know that now.””

Elena’s voice became softer.

“But back then, I was scared. I was alone. I had no idea who to trust.””

Julian looked at the baby again.

His son.

The word still felt unreal.

“What did she do?””

Elena’s face changed.

A memory passed through her eyes.

Pain.

Fear.

Regret.

“She came to my apartment the night before I left.””

Julian stepped closer.

“And?””

“She threatened me.””

The silence that followed felt heavier than any scream.

“She said if I ruined her future with you, I would regret it.””

Julian shook his head.

“No.””

Elena looked at him.

“You don’t want to believe it.””

Because she knew him.

She knew he wanted the world to make sense.

She knew he wanted Charlotte to be the person he thought she was.

“She said you loved her,” Elena continued.

“She said you would never believe me over her.””

Julian felt his stomach twist.

Then Elena reached beside her bed and picked up a small phone.

“I kept this because I knew one day you would need proof.””

She handed it to him.

Julian stared at the screen.

A recording.

A message.

Something saved.

Something Charlotte never knew existed.

His fingers trembled as he pressed play.

And then he heard her voice.

Clear.

Cold.

Unmistakable.

“Julian doesn’t need to know about the baby.””

Julian stopped breathing.

The voice continued.

“He’s finally moving on. I’m not letting you take that away from me.””

He looked at Elena.

Then back at the phone.

The woman he had been about to marry was not just hiding something.

She had been protecting a lie.

May you like

And somewhere back at Saint Aurelia’s church, Charlotte Bennett was no longer waiting for a wedding.

She was waiting for him to discover the truth.
