Chapter 5: The Secret Inside the Medical File

Julian spent the entire drive back to the hospital arguing with himself.

One voice told him Charlotte was manipulating him again.

That was the easy answer.

The answer that allowed him to stay angry.

The answer that allowed him to believe Elena was completely innocent and Charlotte was completely responsible.

But another voice, quieter and harder to ignore, reminded him of one thing.

Elena had also been afraid.

Not just of Charlotte.

Of something else.

And now Charlotte had planted a question in his mind that refused to disappear.

Ask Elena why she disappeared after she found out she was pregnant.

The sentence followed him through every red light.

Every turn.

Every second he sat behind the wheel.

By the time he reached St. Catherine’s Hospital again, his hands were tight around the steering wheel.

He hated that Charlotte had done this.

He hated that even after everything, she had managed to put doubt inside him.

But more than that, he hated that some part of him was wondering if there was something Elena had not told him.

When he entered Elena’s room, she immediately knew something was wrong.

She looked up from Noah’s crib.

“What happened?””

Julian closed the door behind him.

“Charlotte came to the church.””

Elena’s face changed.

“What did she say?””

He hesitated.

That hesitation told Elena everything.

“She said something about me.””

Julian looked at her.

“She said I should ask why you disappeared after you found out you were pregnant.””

The room went silent.

Noah slept peacefully between them.

Unaware.

Uninvolved.

Protected from the storm around him.

Elena looked away.

And that was the moment Julian knew.

There was something.

“Julian…”

“No.””

His voice was quiet.

Not angry.

Not yet.

“I need you to tell me.””

Elena’s eyes filled.

“I wanted to.””

“But you didn’t.””

She looked down.

“No.””

Julian stepped closer.

“Why?””

For a long time, Elena said nothing.

Then she reached into the drawer beside the hospital bed and pulled out a folded envelope.

“I was going to show you this.””

Julian took it.

“What is it?””

“My medical records.””

He opened the envelope.

Inside were papers from the hospital.

His eyes moved across the page.

Then stopped.

He looked confused.

“Elena…”

She took a breath.

“I found out I was pregnant after I collapsed at work.””

Julian looked up.

“You never told me you collapsed.””

“I didn’t want to scare you.””

“That was months ago.””

“I know.””

She rubbed her hands together nervously.

“But that wasn’t the reason I left.””

Julian waited.

Elena looked toward the window.

“When the doctor ran tests, they found something unusual.””

His expression tightened.

“What?””

“A genetic marker.””

Julian frowned.

“I don’t understand.””

“Neither did I.””

She pointed to the paperwork.

“The doctor said it was something that needed more testing.””

He looked at the page.

“There’s nothing here about that.””

“Because I changed doctors.””

“Why?””

Elena swallowed.

“Because someone paid for my records to be transferred.””

A cold feeling moved through him.

“Who?””

“I don’t know.””

“But you have a guess.””

Elena looked at him.

“Yes.””

The answer came softly.

“Charlotte’s father.””

Julian froze.

“Richard Bennett?””

She nodded.

That name carried weight.

Richard Bennett was a powerful businessman. The kind of man whose name appeared on buildings, charity events, and local news stories.

Julian had met him several times.

He was polite.

Charming.

Controlled.

The type of man who never raised his voice because he never needed to.

“Why would he care about your medical records?””

“I don’t know.””

Julian looked back at the papers.

“What does this have to do with Noah?””

Elena hesitated.

“He wanted to know if the baby was healthy.””

“That’s normal.””

“No.””

Her voice became serious.

“Not the way he asked.””

Julian stared.

“What do you mean?””

“He wasn’t asking like a concerned person.””

She looked at Noah.

“He was asking like someone looking for proof.””

The room felt heavier.

“Proof of what?””

Elena shook her head.

“I don’t know.””

Julian walked toward the window.

Outside, people moved through the hospital entrance.

Families arriving.

Families leaving.

Normal lives continuing while his had become something impossible.

“Why didn’t you tell me this before?””

Elena’s eyes lowered.

“Because the night I tried to tell you, Charlotte showed up.””

Julian turned.

“She came to my apartment.””

“When?””

“The night before I disappeared.””

His jaw tightened.

“What happened?””

Elena took a shaky breath.

“She told me you knew everything.””

Julian frowned.

“She said you knew about the pregnancy?””

“Yes.””

“That makes no sense.””

“I know.””

“She told me you were leaving her.””

Elena looked at him.

“She said you wanted a clean future.””

Julian felt sick.

Because he remembered that night.

He remembered calling Elena.

No answer.

He remembered feeling abandoned.

He remembered drinking alone in his apartment and deciding the woman he loved had chosen to leave him.

But what if that entire moment had been created?

What if someone had carefully arranged every piece?

“What happened after Charlotte left?””

Elena’s voice dropped.

“I went to the hospital.””

“Why?””

“Because I was having severe pain.””

Julian looked at her.

“Were you hurt?””

She didn’t answer immediately.

That was enough.

“Elena.””

“I don’t remember everything.””

His heart sank.

“What?””

“I woke up two days later.””

Julian stared.

“You were unconscious?””

She nodded.

“And when I woke up, my phone was gone. My apartment keys were gone. And the first message I saw was from Charlotte.””

“What did it say?””

Elena closed her eyes.

“She said you had chosen her.””

Julian felt anger rise again.

But this time, it wasn’t simple anger.

It was grief.

Because someone had taken two people who loved each other and convinced them they were enemies.

He looked at Noah.

Then back at Elena.

“There’s more.””

She nodded.

“Yes.””

“What?””

Elena pointed toward the envelope.

“Look at the date on the paperwork.””

Julian checked.

His eyes widened.

Because the date was from the same week Elena disappeared.

The same week Charlotte entered his life.

The same week everything changed.

And suddenly, Julian realized something.

Charlotte’s betrayal was only the beginning.

Someone else had been moving behind the scenes.

Someone with money.

Someone with influence.

May you like

Someone who wanted Elena gone.

And maybe wanted Noah hidden too.
