Chapter 7: The Person Watching From the Shadows
Julian stared at the message until the words blurred.
Stop digging, Julian.
Or your son disappears.
For a moment, he couldn’t move.
The hospital room became strangely quiet.
The machines.
The footsteps outside.
The voices of strangers passing in the hallway.
Everything faded behind one thought.
Someone was watching them.
Someone was close enough to take a picture.
Someone knew exactly where Elena and Noah were.
“Julian?””
Elena’s voice pulled him back.
He locked his phone immediately.
Too quickly.
She noticed.
“What happened?””
“Nothing.””
The lie came automatically.
And he hated himself for it.
Because he knew exactly how it felt to be kept in the dark.
Elena had spent months living with unanswered questions because people decided they knew what was best for her.
He wasn’t going to become another person who controlled her reality.
He sat beside her.
“I got a message.””
Her face changed.
“What kind of message?””
Julian hesitated.
Then handed her the phone.
She read it.
The color drained from her face.
For a few seconds, she didn’t speak.
Then she whispered:
“They found us.””
Julian watched her carefully.
“Who?””
“I don’t know.””
“Yes, you do.””
“No.””
Her answer was immediate.
Too immediate.
Julian leaned forward.
“Elena.””
She looked away.
“There are things I haven’t told you.””
The words hurt more than he expected.
Not because he was surprised.
Because he was exhausted.
“How many more secrets are there?””
Her eyes filled.
“I was trying to protect you.””
“That’s what everyone says before they explain why they lied.””
The room became still.
Elena looked down.
“I know.””
Her voice was barely above a whisper.
“But I need you to understand something.””
Julian waited.
“I wasn’t protecting myself.””
She touched Noah’s blanket.
“I was protecting him.””
The anger inside Julian softened.
Because he understood that.
More than anything.
A parent did impossible things for a child.
Even things that destroyed them.
“Tell me everything.””
Elena took a deep breath.
“When I was investigating Bennett Corporation, I found records showing payments to a private medical research group.””
“What kind of research?””
“I don’t know.””
“Then why were you scared?””
“Because my name was in the files.””
Julian frowned.
“Your name?””
She nodded.
“And Noah’s.””
His stomach dropped.
“How?””
“I don’t know.””
She wiped away a tear.
“But the file existed before he was born.””
Julian stood.
“That’s impossible.””
“I know.””
“Unless…”
He stopped.
Unless someone knew about the pregnancy before they were told.
The thought was terrifying.
“Who knew?””
Elena looked at him.
“Someone at the hospital.””
Julian walked to the window.
The city outside looked normal.
Cars moving.
People walking.
Families living ordinary lives.
But inside this room, everything had changed.
“We need evidence.””
Elena nodded.
“I kept copies.””
“Where?””
She pointed toward her bag.
Julian opened it carefully.
Inside were old documents, a flash drive, and a small notebook.
He picked up the notebook.
“What is this?””
“My timeline.””
He opened it.
Dates.
Names.
Locations.
Everything Elena had recorded.
Julian turned pages.
Then stopped.
A name appeared repeatedly.
Charlotte Bennett.
But beneath Charlotte’s name was another.
Richard Bennett.
And beneath his name was something that made Julian’s blood run cold.
Dr. Marcus Vale.
Julian knew that name.
Everyone in the city knew it.
Marcus Vale was one of the most respected doctors in the area.
A man who appeared on television.
A man who hosted charity events.
A man people trusted.
“What does he have to do with this?””
Elena looked frightened.
“He was my doctor.””
Julian stared.
“What?””
“He was the doctor who treated me after I collapsed.””
The room seemed to shrink.
“You said the hospital changed your records.””
“Yes.””
“And Dr. Vale was involved?””
She nodded.
“I think so.””
Julian grabbed his phone.
“I’m calling him.””
“No.””
Elena stopped him.
“Why?””
“Because if he’s involved, he’ll know we know.””
Julian looked at her.
“So what do we do?””
Elena looked at the flash drive.
“We find someone we can trust.””
Before Julian could answer, there was a knock.
Both of them froze.
A nurse stepped inside.
“Mr. Cross?””
Julian immediately became alert.
“Yes?””
“There’s a woman here asking to see Elena.””
“Who?””
The nurse looked at her clipboard.
“Charlotte Bennett.””
Elena’s breathing stopped.
Julian looked toward the door.
After everything.
After the lies.
After the threats.
Charlotte had come back.
But this time, Julian wasn’t the man waiting at the altar.
This time, he knew exactly what was at stake.
“Don’t let her in,” Elena whispered.
Julian looked at her.
Then toward the door.
“I need to know why she came.””
Elena grabbed his hand.
“Julian.””
He looked down.
Her fear was real.
Not manipulation.
Not performance.
Real fear.
Then another sound came from the hallway.
A man’s voice.
Calm.
Familiar.
“Charlotte, you shouldn’t be here.””
Julian froze.
May you like
Because he knew that voice.
Dr. Marcus Vale.
