Chapter 6: The Man Behind the Name

Richard Bennett answered the phone on the second ring.

“Julian.””

His voice was calm.

Too calm.

Julian stood outside the hospital, staring through the glass doors as people walked by.

“How did you know it was me?””

A pause.

Then Richard laughed softly.

“Because Charlotte called me.””

Of course she did.

Julian closed his eyes.

“You knew Elena was alive.””

“I knew she existed.””

The answer bothered him.

“What does that mean?””

“It means you are asking questions without understanding the situation.””

Julian gripped the phone.

“I understand enough.””

“No.””

Richard’s voice remained steady.

“You understand what Elena wants you to understand.””

Julian looked back at the hospital room window.

At Elena.

At his son.

“You transferred her medical records.””

Silence.

A short one.

But enough.

“How did you find out?””

Julian’s stomach tightened.

“You’re not denying it.””

“I asked how you found out.””

“And I asked why you did it.””

Richard sighed.

“Julian, you are an intelligent man. Don’t let emotions make you careless.””

The sentence sounded exactly like something a man with power would say.

Not an explanation.

A warning.

“You don’t get to talk to me like I’m a child.””

“Then stop acting like one.””

Julian froze.

The disrespect was hidden beneath politeness.

That made it worse.

“What happened to Elena?””

Richard didn’t answer.

“Mr. Bennett.””

“You need to listen carefully.””

Julian waited.

“Your wedding was interrupted today because you made a decision without knowing the full story.””

“You mean because I found out the woman I was marrying lied to me?””

“I mean because you are trusting someone who has lied before.””

Julian’s expression hardened.

“You keep talking about Elena.””

“Because Elena is not who you think she is.””

Julian almost ended the call.

Almost.

But he needed answers.

“What did she do?””

Richard was quiet.

Then he said:

“She never told you why she was investigating my family.””

Julian frowned.

“Investigating?””

“Yes.””

The word changed everything.

“Elena was looking into Bennett Corporation.””

Julian said nothing.

Richard continued.

“She found something she should not have found.””

“What?””

“I don’t know.””

The answer surprised him.

“You don’t know?””

“No.””

Richard’s voice became colder.

“But whatever it was, it scared her.””

Julian looked through the hospital window again.

Elena had never mentioned investigating anything.

Not once.

Why?

“Why would she investigate your company?””

“That is a question you should ask her.””

Julian ended the call.

He stood there for a long time.

Too many truths.

Too many lies.

Everyone had a version.

Everyone had a reason.

When he returned to the room, Elena was awake.

She immediately saw his face.

“What did he say?””

Julian didn’t answer.

Instead, he asked:

“Were you investigating Bennett Corporation?””

Her expression changed.

Not confusion.

Recognition.

A slow realization that someone had finally revealed the secret she had been trying to bury.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Elena looked at Noah.

“Because I found something.””

“What?””

“I don’t know exactly.””

Julian stared.

“You don’t know?””

“I found financial records.””

“What kind of records?””

“Payments.””

“To who?””

She looked terrified.

“That’s the problem.””

Julian waited.

“The payments were connected to people who were supposed to be protecting us.””

A chill ran through him.

“What people?””

Elena whispered:

“Doctors.””

The room went silent.

Julian felt his heartbeat in his ears.

“What are you saying?””

“I’m saying the night I disappeared wasn’t random.””

Her voice shook.

“The hospital. The records. Charlotte finding out. Your sudden engagement.””

Julian looked at her.

“All of it connects.””

“To what?””

Elena’s eyes moved toward the door.

Then back to him.

“To someone who didn’t want this baby born.””

Julian felt the air leave his lungs.

Noah stirred in the crib.

A tiny sound.

A reminder that this was no longer just about broken hearts.

Someone had tried to erase a life before it even began.

Julian reached down and touched his son’s blanket.

His anger disappeared.

Replaced by something stronger.

A need to protect.

“What do we do now?””

Elena looked at him.

For the first time since he arrived, she looked less afraid.

Because he was finally standing beside her.

Not chasing the truth alone.

Not believing someone else’s version.

Beside her.

“We find out who did this.””

Julian nodded.

Then his phone buzzed.

One message.

Unknown number.

He opened it.

And his blood went cold.

A photograph.

Taken inside the hospital.

Of Elena.

Of Noah.

Taken just minutes earlier.

Underneath the image were five words.

May you like

Stop digging, Julian.

Or your son disappears.
