Chapter 4: The Woman in the Empty Church

Charlotte was standing exactly where Julian had left her.

At least, that was what it looked like.

Saint Aurelia’s church was almost empty now.

The flowers remained.

The candles still burned.

The chairs were still arranged neatly for a celebration that would never happen.

But the magic was gone.

The guests had left with questions.

The musicians had packed away their instruments.

The family members who had traveled hundreds of miles were now sitting in confusion, trying to understand how a wedding could collapse in the middle of the ceremony.

Charlotte stood near the altar.

Still wearing her wedding gown.

Still holding her bouquet.

But she no longer looked like a bride.

She looked like someone waiting for judgment.

When Julian entered, she turned immediately.

Their eyes met.

For several seconds, neither spoke.

Then Charlotte whispered, “You saw her.””

Julian stopped.

That was all he needed to hear.

Not Who?

Not What are you talking about?

Not Why are you here?

You saw her.

A confession disguised as a question.

“You knew she was alive.””

Charlotte looked down.

“Julian—”

“You knew.””

Her silence answered.

He walked closer.

“You let me believe Elena abandoned me.””

“I didn’t make you believe anything.””

His expression hardened.

“No?””

Charlotte looked at him.

“You were hurt. You were angry. You decided what happened.””

Julian stared.

The calmness in her voice bothered him.

Even now.

Even after everything.

She was trying to control the conversation.

“You lied to me.””

Charlotte’s eyes filled with tears.

“I protected you.””

He almost laughed.

“Protected me?””

“Yes.””

“By hiding my child?””

Her face changed.

Just slightly.

But enough.

Julian saw it.

“You knew.””

Charlotte closed her eyes.

“Julian…”

“You knew Noah was mine.””

The silence afterward was unbearable.

Finally, Charlotte whispered, “Yes.””

The church felt colder.

Julian looked around.

The same place where he was supposed to promise forever.

The same place where Charlotte was supposed to become his family.

“How long?””

She didn’t answer.

“How long did you know?””

“Since Elena was four months pregnant.””

His chest tightened.

Four months.

Four months where he had gone to sleep believing Elena was gone.

Four months where he had planned a wedding.

Four months where his son existed in the world and he didn’t know.

“You had months to tell me.””

“I was afraid.””

“Of what?””

Charlotte looked at him.

“Of losing you.””

Julian shook his head.

“You lost me when you decided I didn’t deserve the truth.””

Tears rolled down her face.

“I loved you.””

“No.””

The word came out quietly.

But firmly.

“You loved having me.””

Charlotte flinched.

“You don’t understand.””

“Then explain.””

She looked around the empty church.

For the first time, her confidence disappeared.

“My whole life, I’ve watched people leave.””

Julian said nothing.

“My father left when I was eight. My mother spent years pretending everything was fine. I learned early that people don’t stay unless you make them stay.””

“That’s not love.””

“I know.””

Her voice cracked.

“But I didn’t know how to stop being afraid.””

Julian looked at her.

Part of him wanted to hate her completely.

It would have been easier.

But people were complicated.

That was the worst part.

Charlotte wasn’t a cartoon villain.

She was a person who made choices.

Choices that destroyed lives.

“What happened the night Elena disappeared?”” he asked.

Charlotte became still.

“I don’t want to talk about that.””

“That wasn’t a request.””

Her eyes lifted.

And for the first time, Julian saw something else.

Not fear.

Calculation.

“She told you everything?””

“Not everything.””

A long pause.

Then Charlotte slowly walked toward one of the empty chairs.

“Because there’s something Elena doesn’t know.””

Julian watched her carefully.

“What?””

Charlotte sat down.

“She wasn’t the only person keeping secrets.””

His jaw tightened.

“What are you talking about?””

Charlotte looked at him.

“Ask Elena who Noah’s doctor is.””

Julian frowned.

“That’s your big revelation?””

“No.””

Her voice dropped.

“Ask her why she disappeared after she found out she was pregnant.””

The words hit differently.

Because Elena had told him she was scared.

She had told him Charlotte threatened her.

But she had never explained everything.

Julian felt the ground shift again.

“You’re lying.””

Charlotte shook her head.

“I lied about many things.””

She wiped her tears.

“But not everything.””

The church doors opened behind him.

A gust of cold air moved through the empty space.

Julian turned.

Then looked back at Charlotte.

The woman who had ruined his wedding.

The woman who had hidden his child.

The woman who was now suggesting Elena had secrets too.

And suddenly, he understood the terrifying truth.

This was not just about one betrayal.

It was about a story where everyone had been hiding a piece of the truth.

And Julian was the only person who had been living inside the lie.

He walked out of the church without another word.

But this time, he wasn’t running toward answers.

May you like

He was running toward the next question.

Who had really been telling the truth?
