Chapter 3: The Recording She Never Wanted Heard

Julian listened to the recording three times.

The first time, he couldn’t believe what he heard.

The second time, he tried to find a reason it wasn’t real.

The third time, he stopped searching for excuses.

Because the voice belonged to Charlotte.

The woman whose hand he had held while choosing wedding invitations.

The woman who had laughed with his family at dinner.

The woman who had promised him that honesty was the foundation of their future.

Her voice came through the phone speaker like a stranger wearing a familiar face.

“Julian doesn’t need to know about the baby.””

The sentence replayed in his mind.

Over and over.

He stood beside Elena’s hospital bed, still wearing the same tuxedo he had planned to wear while saying vows. The irony felt cruel.

A man dressed for a wedding.

A man discovering his entire marriage was built on a lie.

“Where did you get this?”” he asked.

Elena looked down.

“I recorded it because I knew nobody would believe me.””

Julian swallowed.

“Why didn’t you send it to me?””

“I tried.””

The answer came quietly.

“Julian, I tried everything.””

He looked at her.

“You could have found another way.””

The second the words left his mouth, he regretted them.

Elena’s expression changed.

Not anger.

Not surprise.

Pain.

“You really think I didn’t want to?””

Julian looked away.

The guilt came fast.

Because he knew Elena.

Or he used to.

She was not someone who gave up easily. She was the person who stayed up all night helping classmates study. The person who drove two hours to check on a friend who was sick. The person who kept handwritten birthday cards from people she barely spoke to anymore.

Elena fought for people.

She fought for him.

So why hadn’t he fought harder for her?

“I was scared,” Elena whispered.

Julian turned back.

“Of Charlotte?””

She nodded.

“But not just her.””

“What does that mean?””

Elena looked toward the window.

“I found out she had been watching me.””

A cold feeling moved through him.

“Watching you?””

“She knew where I went. She knew who I talked to. She knew when I had doctor appointments.””

Julian’s face tightened.

“How?””

“I don’t know.””

Elena touched the medical bracelet around her wrist.

“But every time I tried to reach you, something happened.””

Julian sat down slowly.

“What kind of things?””

“My phone stopped working.””

He stared.

“My apartment door was damaged once.””

His expression changed.

“Elena…”

“I thought maybe I was imagining things.””

Her voice became smaller.

“I was pregnant. Alone. Terrified. I didn’t know what was real anymore.””

Julian looked at the newborn sleeping peacefully.

Noah had no idea that his existence had caused so much fear before he even opened his eyes.

“What did Charlotte want?”” he asked.

Elena gave a bitter laugh.

“That’s the part I still don’t understand.””

Julian waited.

“She loved the idea of you.””

The words hit him harder than expected.

“She loved your family name. She loved the house. She loved the way people looked at her when she was standing beside you.””

Elena paused.

“But I don’t think she loved you the way you needed.””

Julian stood.

“I need to talk to her.””

“Julian.””

He stopped.

Elena’s eyes filled with worry.

“Don’t go there angry.””

“She lied to me.””

“Yes.””

“She stole months of my life.””

“Yes.””

“She kept my son from me.””

Elena looked down.

“I know.””

His voice dropped.

“So why shouldn’t I be angry?””

“Because angry people make mistakes.””

The room became quiet.

Julian looked at her.

For a moment, he remembered why he loved her.

Because even after everything, Elena was still trying to protect him.

Not herself.

Him.

A knock came at the door.

Both of them turned.

A nurse stepped inside.

“Mr. Cross?””

Julian looked surprised.

“Yes?””

“There’s someone asking for you downstairs.””

His stomach tightened.

“Who?””

The nurse hesitated.

“Your wife.””

The word felt wrong.

Wife.

He wasn’t married yet.

Not legally.

Not after walking away.

But the nurse didn’t know that.

Julian looked at Elena.

Charlotte had come.

Not tomorrow.

Not later.

Now.

She knew.

Somehow, she knew.

“I have to go.””

Elena reached for his hand.

“Be careful.””

Julian looked down at their hands.

His hand.

Her hand.

The same hands that once held each other without fear.

“I will.””

But as he walked toward the door, he realized something.

For the first time in months, he wasn’t walking toward the woman he loved.

May you like

He was walking toward the woman who betrayed him.

And he had no idea which one scared him more.
