Chapter 3: The Secret Behind the Smile

Vanessa's bouquet slipped from her fingers.

White roses scattered across the polished floor beside the altar.

Nobody bent to pick them up.

Ethan watched her stare at his phone, her lips moving soundlessly as she read the message again.

Don't marry Vanessa until you know what happened to the money from the foundation.

He had received it at 8:12 that morning, while his driver was bringing him to the venue.

At first, he had assumed it was a malicious attempt to disrupt the wedding. The number wasn't saved in his contacts, and the sender hadn't provided a name.

But then he had heard Vanessa in the dressing room.

Now the warning felt less like a coincidence and more like a door opening onto something he had never known existed.

“Ethan: Do you recognize the number?””

Vanessa lifted her head.

“Vanessa: No.””

The answer came too quickly.

Marcus folded his arms.

“Marcus: You haven't even looked at the number.””

Vanessa turned on him.

“Vanessa: This is between Ethan and me.””

“Marcus: Then stop answering questions nobody asked you.””

“Vanessa: Excuse me?””

“Marcus: You heard me.””

Ethan raised one hand, stopping the exchange.

“Ethan: Vanessa, what foundation is the message talking about?””

She looked at him with wounded disbelief.

“Vanessa: I can't believe you're doing this to me.””

“Ethan: That's not an answer.””

“Vanessa: You're accusing me of stealing money in front of our families.””

“Ethan: I asked you a question.””

She pressed a hand against her chest.

“Vanessa: I have spent two years loving you, supporting you, standing beside you while you worked late and traveled constantly. And now, on our wedding day, you're treating me like a criminal.””

Ethan studied her face.

Two years.

He had spent two years believing that love meant giving someone the benefit of the doubt.

But there was a difference between trusting someone and refusing to see what stood directly in front of you.

“Ethan: If you've done nothing wrong, then we can find out what this message means.””

“Vanessa: No.””

The word escaped before she could soften it.

Several guests turned toward her.

She blinked, then tried again.

“Vanessa: No, because this is ridiculous. Whatever that message says, it has nothing to do with our marriage.””

Marcus glanced at Ethan.

“Marcus: What foundation?””

Ethan lowered the phone.

“Ethan: The Carter Family Foundation.””

Vanessa's face changed.

It was subtle, but Ethan saw it.

Her eyes widened for a fraction of a second. Her shoulders stiffened. One hand moved instinctively toward the side seam of her wedding gown.

Marcus noticed too.

“Marcus: Vanessa?””

She looked away.

“Vanessa: I don't know what you're talking about.””

Ethan's voice remained calm.

“Ethan: The foundation funds housing assistance, scholarships, and emergency grants. You've attended two of our charity events.””

“Vanessa: That doesn't mean I know anything about its finances.””

“Ethan: I didn't say you did.””

“Vanessa: Then why are you interrogating me?””

“Ethan: Because somebody believes there's a reason I shouldn't marry you today.””

Her eyes shone with tears again.

“Vanessa: Somebody who hates me.””

“Ethan: Maybe.””

He paused.

“Ethan: Or somebody who knows something I don't.””

Vanessa shook her head and turned toward the guests.

“Vanessa: This is insane. I won't stand here while strangers judge me.””

Her mother rose from the front row.

“Denise: Vanessa, sweetheart, come sit down for a minute.””

Vanessa looked at her mother sharply.

“Vanessa: Don't tell me what to do.””

Denise stopped.

The words had been quiet, but they carried enough venom to make several relatives stare.

For a moment, Vanessa appeared to regret them. Then she lifted her chin again.

“Vanessa: I'm sorry, Mama. I'm just overwhelmed.””

Denise sat down slowly, her hands clasped around a small silver purse.

Ethan noticed the movement.

So did Marcus.

Something was wrong, and it wasn't limited to the bride.

Ethan stepped away from the altar.

“Ethan: Marcus, could you ask the coordinator to give us ten minutes?””

Marcus nodded.

“Marcus: I'll handle it.””

As he walked toward the side doors, Vanessa caught Ethan's wrist.

“Vanessa: Don't do this.””

He looked at her hand.

“Ethan: Do what?””

“Vanessa: Turn our wedding into a public investigation.””

“Ethan: Then give me a private answer.””

She released him.

“Vanessa: I already told you. I know nothing about that money.””

Ethan unlocked his phone and opened the message details.

The sender had included an attachment.

He hadn't opened it earlier because he had been preparing for the ceremony. Now he tapped the file.

A photograph appeared.

It showed a printed bank transfer confirmation, with part of the account number obscured. The date was six weeks earlier. The amount was $85,000.

The recipient's name was visible.

Vanessa Brooks.

Ethan stared at the screen.

He had expected a warning.

He hadn't expected a transaction bearing his bride's full name.

“Ethan: What is this?””

Vanessa leaned forward despite herself.

The moment she saw the image, she stepped back.

“Vanessa: That's fake.””

“Ethan: You recognized it before I finished showing you.””

“Vanessa: Because it's obviously fake!””

“Ethan: Then we can verify it.””

She shook her head vigorously.

“Vanessa: No. You can't just wave some random screenshot around and accuse me of a crime.””

“Ethan: I'm not making a criminal accusation. I'm asking why your name appears on a transfer.””

Her breathing became uneven.

“Vanessa: I don't know!””

“Ethan: Who sent the money?””

“Vanessa: Nobody sent me anything.””

“Ethan: Then why are you frightened?””

She slapped the phone from his hand.

It struck the carpet near the floral arch.

A collective gasp rose from the guests.

Ethan looked down at the phone, then slowly lifted his gaze to Vanessa.

She stared at her own hand as though it belonged to someone else.

“Vanessa: I didn't mean to.””

He bent, picked up the phone, and checked the screen. It remained intact.

“Ethan: I know you didn't want that photograph to be seen.””

Her face flushed.

“Vanessa: You have no right to humiliate me like this.””

“Ethan: You had every opportunity to tell me the truth.””

“Vanessa: There is no truth to tell!””

“Ethan: Then help me understand the transfer.””

She looked toward Denise.

Her mother immediately stood and walked down the aisle.

“Denise: That's enough. Vanessa is upset, and this has gone too far.””

Ethan turned to her.

“Ethan: Do you know anything about this transfer?””

Denise's lips parted.

For a moment, she looked as though she might answer.

Then she glanced at her daughter.

“Denise: No.””

Vanessa seized the opportunity.

“Vanessa: See? Nobody knows anything because there's nothing to know.””

Marcus returned, carrying a slim folder.

He had heard enough to understand that the situation was no longer just about a suspicious message.

“Marcus: Ethan, I found something.””

He placed the folder on a small table beside the altar.

“Marcus: The foundation's financial director called me this morning. He said an account had been flagged during a routine review. I thought it was unrelated to the wedding, but when I saw that message, I asked him to send the preliminary report.””

Vanessa's expression emptied.

“Vanessa: You called the foundation?””

“Marcus: I called after Ethan showed me the message.””

“Vanessa: You had no right!””

“Marcus: I serve on its board, Vanessa. If foundation money is missing, I have every reason to ask questions.””

Ethan opened the folder.

The first page contained a summary of the transfer. The second listed the date and authorization record.

His eyes stopped on a line near the bottom.

The payment had been approved using a digital authorization linked to an account assigned to someone inside his executive office.

Not Vanessa.

Someone who had access to the foundation's financial systems.

Someone Ethan trusted.

He looked up.

“Ethan: Who authorized this transfer?””

Marcus turned the page toward him.

The name was printed clearly.

Ethan felt the air leave his lungs.

It belonged to his older sister, Olivia Carter, the woman who had helped him build the foundation from the beginning.

Vanessa covered her mouth.

Denise closed her eyes.

And Ethan realized the betrayal might reach far beyond the woman standing in a wedding dress before him.

“Ethan: Call Olivia.””

Marcus pulled out his phone.

Before he could dial, Ethan's phone vibrated again.

A new message appeared from the same unknown number.

Ask your sister why she paid Vanessa—and ask Vanessa what she promised in return.

Ethan looked at his bride.

For the first time since he had walked into the dressing room, Vanessa wasn't pretending to cry.

She was genuinely terrified.

And when the ballroom doors suddenly opened, revealing Olivia standing in the hallway with a second folder pressed against her chest, Vanessa whispered three words that changed everything.

“Vanessa: She wasn't supposed to come.””
