Chapter 5: The Agreement Nobody Was Supposed to Find
Ethan read the name twice.
Daniel Reeves.
He had never met the man, but the words beneath the photograph suggested that someone had been working around him for months.
“What original agreement?”” Ethan asked.
Olivia drew a breath.
“Olivia: That's what I came here to find out.””
Vanessa reached for the photographs.
Ethan moved them out of her reach.
“Vanessa: You're making this sound like some kind of conspiracy.””
“Ethan: Then tell me why you were meeting Daniel Reeves.””
“I don't know anyone by that name.””
Olivia tapped the photograph.
“Olivia: You're sitting across from him.””
Vanessa stared at the image.
“Vanessa: I met dozens of people during the foundation's charity events. I can't remember everyone's name.””
“Olivia: That photograph wasn't taken at a charity event.””
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Ethan studied his bride. Her veil had slipped slightly from its comb, and a strand of hair clung to the corner of her mouth. She looked less like the confident woman who had entered the ballroom and more like someone trying to calculate how many exits remained available.
He remembered how she had reacted when he first mentioned a prenuptial agreement months ago.
She had cried, accused him of doubting her love, and refused to speak to him for nearly a day.
At the time, he had thought her reaction came from fear of being judged.
Now he wondered whether she had been afraid of something much more specific.
“Ethan: Did you know Daniel before you met me?””
Vanessa's eyes flickered.
“No.””
“Ethan: Did you meet him through the foundation?””
“No.””
“Ethan: Did you discuss my company with him?””
“Vanessa: Ethan, stop asking the same question in different ways!””
Her outburst echoed beneath the chandeliers.
Ethan lowered his voice.
“Ethan: I'm asking because your answers keep changing.””
Vanessa looked toward the guests. Several relatives had begun whispering openly. Her cousin sat with a hand over her mouth, while her father stared at the floor as if he wanted to disappear into it.
She turned back to Ethan.
“Vanessa: Can we please leave this room?””
“Ethan: We can step into the adjoining lounge with our attorneys present.””
“Vanessa: Attorneys? You're treating me like an enemy!””
“Ethan: I don't know what to call you right now.””
The words struck her harder than his raised voice could have.
For a moment, she seemed to forget the audience.
“Vanessa: I'm your fiancée.””
Ethan glanced at the wedding band waiting on the table beside the officiant's book.
“Ethan: I was about to make you my wife.””
The distinction silenced her.
Marcus moved closer to Ethan.
“Marcus: The venue manager has opened the private lounge. We can take the documents in there and let the guests wait.””
Ethan nodded.
“Ethan: Good. Nobody touches these photographs or the financial records.””
Olivia gathered the papers into her folder.
Vanessa seized Ethan's sleeve.
“Vanessa: You can't just walk away from the ceremony.””
He gently removed her hand.
“Ethan: I haven't decided what I'm doing yet.””
“Vanessa: Then don't let them decide for you.””
He looked at her.
“Ethan: Who are you talking about?””
She didn't answer.
That silence followed him as he walked through the side doorway with Olivia and Marcus.
The adjoining lounge was bright and elegant, with cream walls, tall windows, and a long table set with untouched champagne glasses. Through the open doors, Ethan could still see the guests shifting in their seats.
The wedding coordinator approached hesitantly.
“Coordinator: Mr. Carter, should we resume the ceremony?””
“Ethan: Not yet. Please give everyone refreshments and let them know there will be a delay.””
“Coordinator: Of course.””
When the coordinator left, Ethan placed the photographs on the table.
“Ethan: Start from the beginning.””
Olivia opened her folder.
“Olivia: Three months ago, someone requested access to the foundation's donor database. The request came through an executive account at your company.””
Ethan frowned.
“Ethan: Which account?””
“Olivia: Your chief financial officer's.””
“Ethan: Thomas?””
“Olivia: Yes.””
Ethan leaned back.
Thomas Bennett had worked with him for seven years. He managed corporate reporting, reviewed major transactions, and had access to sensitive financial information.
“Ethan: Why would Thomas need the donor database?””
“He didn't. The request was denied, but the audit log showed several attempts to access restricted files.””
Marcus picked up the second photograph.
“Marcus: And Daniel Reeves?””
“Olivia: The name appeared in a preliminary inquiry into the access attempts. We couldn't establish what he wanted or who had contacted him.””
Ethan rubbed his forehead.
“Ethan: Why didn't anyone tell me?””
“Olivia: Because we had an incomplete report, and Thomas claimed the attempts were caused by a software migration. I asked the compliance team to investigate.””
“Ethan: And then the transfer to Vanessa happened.””
Olivia nodded.
“Olivia: That's when I became concerned that the incidents might be connected.””
Ethan stared at the photographs.
“Ethan: What does any of this have to do with an original agreement?””
Olivia hesitated.
“Olivia: When you established the foundation, you signed a document giving an independent trustee authority to suspend certain transactions if evidence of fraud emerged.””
“Ethan: That's standard governance.””
“Olivia: There was an additional provision.””
She removed a thin, yellowed copy from the back of the folder.
“Olivia: It was part of the original partnership agreement with the foundation's first institutional donor. If the company became involved in a substantiated financial misconduct investigation, the donor could request an immediate review of the foundation's relationship with Carter Logistics.””
Ethan read the page.
He remembered signing dozens of documents during the company's early years. The foundation had grown rapidly, and the original partnership agreement had been drafted by outside counsel.
But one clause stood out.
The agreement required disclosure of certain conflicts of interest involving individuals seeking financial benefits from both the company and the foundation.
Ethan looked up.
“Ethan: You're saying Vanessa might have been trying to obtain access to confidential company information?””
“Olivia: I'm saying we need to determine why she met Daniel Reeves and whether any restricted information was shared.””
A knock sounded at the lounge door.
Marcus opened it.
The wedding coordinator stood there, visibly uncomfortable.
“Coordinator: I'm sorry to interrupt, but Ms. Brooks's mother has asked to speak with you.””
Ethan glanced toward Olivia.
“Ethan: Bring her in.””
Denise entered slowly, clutching her silver purse. Without the guests surrounding her, she seemed smaller, her shoulders rounded beneath her champagne-colored dress.
She sat down but kept her hands folded tightly in her lap.
“Denise: I need to tell you something about Vanessa.””
Ethan waited.
Denise looked at Olivia, then at the open folder.
“Denise: The money wasn't for my house.””
Olivia closed her eyes briefly.
Marcus stopped moving.
Ethan felt his stomach tighten.
“Ethan: Where did it go?””
Denise's fingers trembled.
“Denise: Vanessa said she needed it to repay someone who was threatening to expose her.””
“Ethan: Expose her for what?””
“I don't know everything. She wouldn't tell me.””
“Ethan: Who was threatening her?””
Denise shook her head.
“She told me his name was Daniel.””
Olivia slowly placed the restaurant photograph in front of her.
Denise stared at it.
“Denise: That's him.””
Ethan's pulse quickened.
“Ethan: How long has Vanessa known him?””
“Denise: Before she met you.””
The room seemed to contract around him.
“Ethan: How much before?””
Denise swallowed.
“Denise: She knew him when she was working at a private investment firm. She told me he was helping her build a career.””
Olivia leaned forward.
“Olivia: Did she ever say why he wanted money?””
“No. But two weeks ago, I overheard them arguing on the phone. Vanessa said she'd already given him everything he asked for.””
Ethan looked down at the photograph again.
The man in the picture had been sitting across from Vanessa three months earlier.
Before the transfer.
Before the wedding.
Before Ethan knew there was anything to fear.
“Ethan: What did Daniel say to her?””
Denise's eyes filled with tears.
“He told her that if she didn't keep her promise, he would send you the original contract.””
Ethan went very still.
“Ethan: What contract?””
Denise opened her purse and removed a folded sheet of paper.
“I found this in Vanessa's room last night. I was going to ask her about it, but she begged me not to tell anyone.””
She slid it across the table.
Ethan unfolded it.
At the top was the logo of a private investment company.
Below it was a heading:
*CONFIDENTIAL INTRODUCTION AND COMPENSATION AGREEMENT.*
The date was nearly three years old.
And the signature at the bottom belonged to Vanessa Brooks.
Ethan began reading.
Then he reached the paragraph describing the compensation she would receive if she successfully introduced a qualified investor to a confidential business opportunity.
His eyes stopped at the name listed beside the opportunity.
*Carter Logistics.*
He looked up at Olivia.
“Ethan: This was signed before Vanessa and I even met.””
Olivia nodded slowly.
“Olivia: Which means we need to know what she was trying to sell.””
Before Ethan could turn the page, his phone rang.
Thomas Bennett's name appeared on the screen.
Ethan answered.
“Ethan: Thomas, tell me you have an explanation for why your account tried to access the foundation's restricted files.””
There was a long pause.
Then Thomas spoke in a voice so low Ethan barely recognized it.
“Thomas: Ethan, listen carefully. Whatever Vanessa told you, don't let her sign anything today.””
Ethan's grip tightened around the phone.
“Ethan: Why?””
Thomas exhaled sharply.
“Thomas: Because the agreement she signed three years ago wasn't just about an introduction.””
May you like
Another pause.
“Thomas: It was a contract to acquire a controlling interest in your company.””
